Be good to see some more info on this with pictures.
Just did a bit of looking boxes are cheap and these are the ratios:
1st --- 3.760
2nd --- 2.269
3rd --- 1.645
4th --- 1.187
5th --- 1.000
6th --- 0.843
Reverse-- 3.564
for spirited use with a low diff ratio, forget 1st gear and pull off in 2nd and you have a half decent set of ratios
1st gear is a bit wank
second gear would last about 2 minutes in a box not designed to handle the launches would it not
The gear tooth 'set' would be no different between 1st and 2nd - usually only top gear is different to reduce noise from a quite helical cut anyway.
Unless you are planning double duty as a land rover, a 3.76 1st with a 3.89 axle is ridiculously low.
sorry to resurrect this slighty old thread, but perhaps we could keep the discussion going, has anyone gone any further with it?
im definitely looking at this (mating to an xflow) would i have to get a bespoke friction plate made or is there one that fits?
i see from the other thread that the escort prop is the same splines apparently, what about the prop length does anyone know?
cheers!

the friction plate and clutch could be a 23 spline clutch used with the standard type 9 as they are the same input shaft. the output shaft you could use a ford type prop shaft but you would have to change the seal in the back of the box or i think (i say think because i haven't measured the length out it) use the rx8 fiberglass/carbon fiber prop with an adapter plate to bolt it to the diff flange. I will check the mazda prop length later. I still want to do this converstion in the future but i haven't had time YET!
super mate, thanks for the info! i didnt know the input shaft was the same, ive done very little research on the actual box. I'm just a little sceptical though, if this is such a good alternative, why are there not more done? are we missing something??
any idea what thickness of adapter plate you will get away with leaving a safe enough amount of meat in the spigot bearing?
haven't got a clue what the thickness is you will have to work that one out yourself and i think it is lack on knowledge about the box and the fact that you have to make an adapter plate to fit it. They have a hydraulic clutch as standard too. if i was you i would copy the ford side of the bell housing and use the ford starter and then the other side will be to just bolt the 6 speed up to the engine then. I'll get round to it one day.
If using a Pinto the easiest way is to use a transit pinto to MT75 adaptor plate we done one for a customer who's putting this box in a MK2 Cortina.
It bolts to the pinto block so you just need to sort out the box side of it to bolt the bell housing to the plate simple.

well im using an xflow, which is the same bolt pattern as a pinto, so that could work. the plate is not really my concern, the biggest worry is the spacing, and will the spigot shaft go into the bearing far enough, and will the splines on the input shaft be sufficient to pick up the clutch by enough - no use in having 1/4 of the splines sticking in the end of the clutch plate
Sounds good, im just starting to look for a box now, there is any amount on ebay for under 100quid, but it’s costing me a small fortune to get the bloody thing send to me
Anyone over here wants more than what a full car is worth for one.
Have you any idea what way the hydraulic clutch setup is on it? Ie could it easily be converted to mechanical, or is it one of those incorporated cylinder/fork jobs?
Also does the gearstick come out in the same place as the type-9?
Clutch cylinder is external its near the top of the gearbox over to the left from memory the gear lever is slightly further back.
type9 lever is already pretty far back how much is slightly, mm's like or a few inches?
Have a look at this

ahhh brilliant, very helpful! cheers mate
I had a look at a 6speed toyota altezza RS200 box last night, they are made by the same crowd as well as the nissan S15 6 speed so i thiught they would be largely the same but obviously not so if a 23spline clutch fits your RX8 box !
Altezza has 21 splines input shaft, 225 friction plate. just a random bit of info
I am just starting to look in to fitting one of these boxes to my MKI Escort with a Zetec.
What are the options for getting the Speedo to still work ?
Is there a 'fix' to either
1 Mod the box to have a mechanical speedo drive,
2 Something to convert the electronic Speedo to drive the escort mechanical Speedo,
Or
3 is there a 'modern' Speedo that can be fitted in to the the escort dash (so to keep it looking as original as possible) that will work with the electronic speedo output ?
you could use a koso type speedo ? run off prop etc.
What about a GPS speedo? Then no cables at all.
Matt
well boys sorry about the delay iam new on here so not allowing me to reply to privite messages , and finding out how to use this ..site
the rx8 box is more or less a straight swap for the weak type 9 and a lot cheaper than buying a set of tranx gears and hydroilc system and quick shift as the rx8 has all this and same price of type 9 all in .
my plate will fit any type engine with a little work of a few holes . but for most engines can come pre drilled to suit all ..right its same as type 9 1" 23 spline main shaft and out put prop is same and you can use rx8 lighter type and only have to drill your flange to suit .if you use the type9 prop you need to change the oil seal but i can supply plate bolts oil seal and instrutions with diagrams to show but its so easy , and your clutch is a 2.0 but its better to leave this and wet clutch other trying to do a cable but this could also be done at extra cost use your typ 9 starter too, ..the only thing that a minus of this is that its electronic speedo , so you have to sort your method on this depending on or choice of car kit, race car etc ..if any questions need to ask phil 07815007836 .. plate kit and gearboxes in stock
some pics off first plates done should help out they can come in any colour plastic coated if rquireed ..
sorry lads not letting upload pics will do new ones tomorrow forall to see , phil
Its as easy as putting type9 in .. Just updated thread.p9cyo
The lexus is 200 is totally wrong and oppisite to the rx8 .. Looked at that before i work out that the rx8 is the best and easiest with the splines all the same ..as you use your clutch and prop ... Lexus is differnt aswel as nissian sx200 honda s2000 .. Mazda its same as ford .. So therye a bargain for what your getting
thanks for the info Phil. how much are your plates? and a box for that matter? are you retaining the hydraulic clutch?
How is the bellhousing size, does the standard non-auto tunnel need to be modified?
cheers !
Hi there .. There should be no problem with the large tunnels in escorts as the bell housing is smaller than the type9 ... But it's easy to use as the hydrolic system really , but could be changed to cable if really needed but I think the hydrolic will be more reliable ... Could do plate with all new bolts oil seal and p&p for £100 . Cheapest conversion plate ever really and gearbox £150 with stick clutch arm bearing and hydrolic system .. £20p&p all from low mileage cars .. Gearbox mount coming soon .. But can adapt. Type9 one .. Phil 07815007836 .
cool, can you post some pics of the plate please?
you can get GPS speedo kits with a small L.E.D display for about 60 dollars in the U.S, you wont have a speedo in a tunnel, but its a good solution
It would be good if there was a way to retain a Speedo that will drive the mileometer , so as to monitor the miles covered due to restricted mileage on insurance.
