BHP and Top Speed
I have been doing some rought calculations for my top speed challange car, I have been working out roughly how much HP will be required to crack it look at my findings quite interesting.
The first column is target speed and the next two are flywheel and @wheel BHP.
Speed Fly Wheels
100 78 67
110 102 86
120 130 110
130 163 138
140 201 171
150 246 209
160 296 251
170 353 300
180 417 354

Re: BHP and Top Speed
So you'd expect 160mph odd??
Whats the word with the aerodynamics? Wing mirrors off etc..?
When & where is it going to be? Wes and I would like to go if possible

Re: BHP and Top Speed
Doesn't the RST get to 130mph with only 132bhp and I had my old RS1600i off the clock a few times with only 118bhp, which must have been 125-130mph.

296 Clint is allot of power out of a RST, what the record 286? I think?

Re: BHP and Top Speed
The car that holds the RST top speed at the moment is (if i remember correctly from the old max power article) the power engineering one, which had 300 BHP and did something like 153 mph, with the wing mirrors off and the rear shelf out! Severn valley motorsport have done some 300 BHP conversions using the ZVH system, and have unoffically beaten the power engineering one, this car is the one that has done 157 mph with no bits off (i might be wrong, its been along time since i had any interst in RST's!!). Both of these cars where S2's.
I think Clint will be able to beat the 157 mph based on the spec of the engine and "other bits" that he said, will need to get a good launch though. I don't know what power it will have but I recon it will need 350 BHP to do over 160 mph, as the aerodynamics will be playing apart of it at these speeds. Add 80 BHP nitrous and it's going to be an animal and going to get into insane speed territory, hope it's going to have BIG brakes

Re: BHP and Top Speed
Wes, I think both those cars had tall gearing.
Dup, i was going to mention that as the car has to 'suck' the road.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
I'll dig out the article tonight, but i'm sure they both had standard gearboxes, watch this space -> <-

what the spec of your engine clint? Or is it top secret

Re: BHP and Top Speed
Wes I thought it was the diff that was changed, maybe wrong.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
Toppy this is the rought spec :
2.0 full 16v Zetec
9:1 compression
Forged Pistons
Special Rods
reworked crank
Ported head 33.5mm/30mm valves
Secret cam profile (well secret until I have made me mind up)
Titanium Lifters
38mm Throttle bodies with special plenum
Stainless Steel low volume Tubular Exhaust manifold
Roller bearing Turbo
80HP NOS
Aluminium Flywheel and 5.25" clutch
Low Pressure oil pump
Lightened Block
I will be doing the head work within gthe next couple of weeks so pictures will be forthcomming.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
What kind of gearbox is going in it Clint?
Stevie Ross-Watt done 151.1mph in his series 2 with 195bhp at the wheels

that would put my equasion 14HP out (on the safe side) how ever his car was a mk4 and they are a bit more aerodynamic than a Mk3.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
FasterFords I have had Sharons 1.6 Escort standard 68HP Auto to 120MPH but the run it needed was a little further then 1.5 Miles The maths I used to get the above figures for BHP to keep accelleration (feet per second per second) fairly constant. you will be able to make far more speed with higher gearing but it would not be achieved on a 2 mile straight.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
I didn't know it was a MK 3 you were doing it in,I noticed your calculations as well, things are looking good for you then.
When is the car going to be built and ready to tear up the tarmac?

Re: BHP and Top Speed
Clint, I'll let you off then I guess thats why your having the 80 NOS, so that you will get up to the top speed faster.
I am I right in saying that NOS doesn't help top speed ?

Re: BHP and Top Speed
suppose that depends if you need more power to hit the rev limit in top.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
The NOS will help top speed, i think thats why Clint is fitting it, just in case, I don't think it will be needed. It won't be any use off the line as you going to spin the wheels for a couple of miles
I looked in the old mp article last night, (March 1995), and the severn valley RST did 156.6 mph at Bruntingthorp, with a 290BHP 1600cc CVH engine (with 6 people sitting on the bonnet and still spinning on the rollers according to the article), a fiesta diesel gearbox, and standard size wheels and tyres.
The power engineering one did 152.2 MPH, with all the seats removed (bar the drivers), the rear parcell shelf, the spare wheel, and the door mirrors.

Re: BHP and Top Speed
sorry, bit confused after your post, is this top speed being acheived on rollers? surely thats not cricket!

Re: BHP and Top Speed
No m8, the speeds were all done at Bruntingthorpe, the 6 people business was to get the power reading from the rolling road, i thought what i wrote might be confusing
I totally agree that claiming top speeds from a rolling road isn't cricket, as it doesn't take into account for drag and the length of time it takes to get there.
