1977 Escort Mexico Mk2
Didnt think I would be doing this but due to a change of circumstances I am testing the market with my Ford Escort Mk2 RS mexico. its quite a well known car in the Rs world winning 14 concourse competitions between 1990 and 2001 after It was last restored in 1990. It has appeared in numerous magazines over the years getting front page spreads on the likes of Performance ford , Classic ford ect .
TPY18S is one of only 2,400 genuine Rs Mexicos ever sold ,this one was supplied by Measham Ford of Teesside back in 1977, it is finished in its original colour of Venetian red .
since buying this car although it was tax and tested I couldnt leave it with rust on the body so I made the decision to strip it right back to a shell to restore it back to its former glory, I am an Ex- Paintsprayer by trade and with the help of a retired panel beater we have spent over 700 long and at times painful hours restoring it to the condition it is now in.
This has not been a quick tidy up, I did the car with the intention of keeping it as a long term investment so all rot has been cut out and replaced with New panels where possible including the following.
new inner wings with correct rs turrets and bracing
outer front wings
front panel
slam panel
door skins
hinge panels
complete sills
inner sills
rear inner wheel arches
outer wheel arches
lower quarter panels
inner boot/quarter panels
rear valance complete
mint boot sourced
mint bonnet sourced
front floor pans
scuttle panel has been remade
bulkhead has been rebuilt using all new metal.
chassis rail replaced
front chassis rails were pretty good but have been strengthened
rear spring hangers rebuilt.
the Shell has been rebuilt on a spit and all the underneath has been scraped and primed, sealed then coated with a stonechip protection then re-primed and 3 coats of 2 pack paint applied.
the body has been filled and straightened where necessary, primed in all top quality 2 pack products guide coated, blocked down, re-primed guide coated and blocked again then smoothed right down and left to settle , the car was painted and baked in an oven with High solids 2 pack paint. It quite possibly now looks brighter than when it left the factory .
once painted It has been treated with cavity waxoyle then the full car rebuilt using brand new components, if I couldn't buy it new I had components blasted and powdercoated so looking underneath it looks pretty much new!
the Rs2000 fishnet recaro interior was fitted back in 1989 and was later re trimmed in black leather.
I have the 1600 Mexico engine and 4 speed gearbox with Rs manifold for originality in case I ever wanted to refit them however the car at the moment has a fully rebuilt 2.0 Pinto fitted, hi lift cam and twin webbers. It runs and sounds very well.
gearbox is a rebuilt 5 speed type 9
rear diff is standard and has been previously rebuilt.
brake calipers,cylinders,pipes are all new.
rear springs are new CDS lowered fast road poly bushed with 1" blocks.
bilstien rear shocks
new steering rack, track control arms, trackrod ends.
front suspension is new adjustable coil overs.
exhaust is a 4 branch onto a Scorpion stainless system.
wheels are brand new Superlight 7x13" with 185/60/13 tyres
all nuts and bolts replaced with zinc coated where possible.
the car has a comprehensive service record with previous Mot"s , invoices, even road tax discs. previous keeper has even kept a maintained record on everything carried out down to touching in stonechips.
I have the car insured for £20,000 with Flux for the bargain price of £140.
the car has mot til November 2014 and is currently sorn, Its is up and running starts off the key first time , drives really well and is ready to tax, It is pretty much complete however if I was keeping it there is a few things I would do, bear in mind the car is 37 years old and I am still working on the car when I get chance so will keep plodding away on the to-do-list.
price is a tough one as hard to gauge a valuation as dont see many come up but after talking to a few people with more idea than me I am asking £17,995 or there abouts, I would expect anyone seriously interested in buying this car or making an offer would want to come and view it first, best method of contact is good old conversation. my mobile is 07976 410888 9am - 9pm.
