Are Cossie really that expense to own ?

With the FRP having less than a year of its lease left I'm starting to wonder what to get next, and nothing really interest me without spending more than I want.

So I've been thinking of another S2 RST, but I would love a 3DR or possibly a Saff, but everyone says there a bugger to keep on the road.

What are people views on running them, I wouldn't want a mega bhp one, maybe just stg 1.

I guess the other thing is insurance cost would be alot higher than an RST.

    ???

    Thanks guys.

Re: Are Cossie really that expense to own ?

If you dont rag them everywhere they will last and return good
value for money as long as the one you start with has been looked after.

Ask RSGary how much he spends a year on his he uses his every day and its a ST1.

Tune them and rag it then you will be paying out for wearing parts and the common problems more often.

I am going to get one for Sharon as her everyday driver and will keep it at 330HP the power and reliability ratio is good here not as good as st1 but you know Sharon

BUT no matter what stage of tune you are at if the turbo goes its at least £350 for a rebuild and engine min rebuild is £1500 etc.

I believe they can be both cheap and expensive depending who you are.

Re: Are Cossie really that expense to own ?

If you own one for any period of time it will cost you money, and by that I mean you will see a bill or two that has a number with three 0's at the end. But at the end of the day does that make it expensive?

Let us make no mistake, this is supercar performance at budget level. Clean good running 2wd saffs can be picked up for around £4k. I personally would buy one with sound interior and bodywork (bits that are a sod to replace / repair) and assume that the engine will last only a few miles. For around 3k you can have a 'good as new' engine leaving you with frantic fun motoring for several years all for 7k, which is the ammount a Subaru looses in value after 11months of ownership. Insurance isn't so bad, as long as you have loads of NC, few (preferably none) points and are over 26.

I've seen similar posts to this on the RSOC BB and people jump on saying "People who say it costs loads are talking bollox - I've had mine 6months and all it's cost me is an oil change". These people are in for a shock, or are just increadibly lucky. If you buy a cossie, be ready to spend at least 50% the value of the car on it, and if you don't have to then count yourself lucky.

Another good point to mention most of the guys I know who have cossies have had them for a long time and have no intention of selling, that says somthing ! so the money you do spend isnt ever wasted as you get all the benefit.

I'm considering selling mine, but only because I want a 3-door!

And I'd be taking my engine with me!

My opinion is, the nicer it is, the less you should use it, in other words have an ordinary car for everyday use, that way you can use the cos as a fun car, without putting miles on it, in traffic, and shopping etc, but thats because i dont like leaving mine anywhere unattended. but perhaps im paranoid.

You just can;t beat the performance for price, and as Clint said as long as your not flat out in every gear all the time the engines are pretty good too.

Ive always said if you can just afford to buy one you wont be able to afford to run one, Mine gets driven hard and obviously has its hicups but after rebuilding the engine on my 3dr now and my saph before i knew it would take plenty more abuse. Oh and dippin the clutch really does let ya know if uve a strong diff, a mates just blown his second in 2 months !! oops!! PLEASURE EASILY OUTWAYS PRICE !!

SIDEWAYS - Its rude not to !!

They are bloody loads cheaper than BDA Mk1's I can tell you!!

I find Cossies a good everyday car if you want em to be. I go to the shops, the pub and all over in mine and they stay normal until you ask em to be naughty...then they are!!

Oh yeah I pay 512 insurance on the Saph and I think 600 on the 3 Door cos its a RS5, so not bad really??

Re: Are Cossie really that expense to own ?

Iv'e had mine nearly two and a half years now and it gets used most days for work, and the bills so far have been for: 1 set pads, 1 set followers and cambelt, 1 wheel bearing, 2 tyres and mobil.1 every 3 months. I do tend to drive it sympathetically apart from 2 track days, and in return its been quite good on running costs so far..
It seems to me if you drive them hard it WILL cost you sooner than later even though its more fun..

They are not that expense to run at all .Everyone knows that i do high miles on my cars and so far the cossie has been the best and most reliable motors i have had . My last cossie i did 36K in a year in a half The last 15k was on another engine . But if you look after them its just ware and tear stuff. mostly pads and tyres and service's etc This one i have now i have done 10k in 3 months mostly ware and tear brakes and a head gasket water leak

Clint: The 3DR is my fav, with the 2wd Saff coming a close 2nd, but I think a clean Saff is going to be cheaper and easier to get. ???

How much would be a good budget to aim for ?

[/QUOTE] Sorry mate, I've only just spotted this!
I really fancy a nice 3-door and intend to get one eventually. I'm just lobbing some thoughts up into the air. I have a spare engine so if I could get hold of a 3-door with a blown engine that would probably make more sense. Just out of pure interest, what sort of money do you think we would be talking for mine?

If I had the money at the moment, I would have been very interested in this one on the RSOC BBS

It was up for 4 grand, is this too little for a clean cossie ?

Talking about this, anyone read the article about the chap who was looking for a 4x4 in Rallye News?

He spent ages finding a decent one, then had to pay more than he wanted to, then it cost him about 2-3k when he got it serviced! Ok he did get an exhaust and stage one too.

    How about:
Jreg, 4x4 saff. 63k, 3owners, leather but no aircon, every receipt-MOTand FSH, original panels compeletly unmarked, as new leather and basically cleaner than Tony Blairs teeth.

This is not sale patter, but comments made by a recent purchaser.

    How much?

    £5k.

Fasterfords, that cossie is VERY cheap, almost too cheap, it looks very clean, so why so cheap? 2 possible reasons: Engine about to expire, or it's not a real cossie, just had all the bits fitted. I would tread carefully with this one my friend

Wes mate, I don't know about the one above or its spec but I've a friend who has actively been seeking 4x4's and he says that thats is the sort of money everyday standard'ish runners are going for.

He knows his cosworths very well and knows what to look for, and only recently missed out on a very clean J-reg silver one by about 30mins. That one went for £4500!

    The spec is here http://www.rsownersclub.co.uk/ubb/ul...;f=42;t=000495

But it has now sold, just wondered if it was too cheap, 3DR's seem a fair bit dearer though.

    Oh, it's a 2wd.

Only the really tidy ones will go for more than that. The "previous owner for 10years" means nothing in my opinion, and it can't of been looked after too well if it needed £3k's worth of work in 6months of ownership. Either that it's been thrashed every day in those 6months.

With dodgy paintwork and soggy cards and flamer kits (something I consider detrimental to the value) I'd of said £4k was strong money.

I think you generally pay for what you get as with all cars, people have different perceptions of 'mint' or 'good condition'. But you can get really good deals now and then

When I've got the money later this year, I'll ask Clint to keep an eye out for one, he's probably got one sat in the corner of his driveway that he's forgotten about.

A 6 grand car is not automaticly going to be better than a 4 grand car, it could be worse, I'd just like something that 90% standard, hasn't got glow in the dark yellow samco hoses and that stands a chance of seeing 10,000 more miles without a rebuild or welding.

FF.. Looks like you have the same worried head on as me I'm looking for a 4x4.. Only reason it has to be a 4x4 is the mrs will drive and teh last thing I want is her getting it side ways by mistake when coming on boost with the kids in it. Oh and only 4x4 come in the colour we want (smoke stone).

We have one lined up ... Just waiting for the show season to finish.

    But knowing my luck... hehe

Do the 4x4 suffer from more understeer than the 2wd, I only ask cause the Scooby I last drove understeered pretty bad.

Re: Are Cossie really that expense to own ?

I felt a little understeer in the 4x4 I had a test in on Saturday down at CC, but it was higher than 60 into a tightish corner .

But I'm sure that could be dialed out with some adjustable suspension, lucky this one has Coil overs

There is also an art to fast 4x4 driving, I learnt a lot in my 2.2 quattro days. The skill is to lift off for a split second and then floor it & the car will pull its self out of the slide.

Hmmmmmmmm, I was thinking about getting a Saph next Feb, I'll be 21 by then with 2 NCB (touch wood). After readin this tho, I am starting to think otherwise. No offence but the Saph would be my last choice of Cosworth, I would prefer a 3dr, but there are dear.

If you reckon I should have 3k "layin" around for repairs, looks like I'll be getting another S2.

I only ever had understeer once but I was booting it, but funny you should say that, but the fecker does stick like shit to a blanket in the wet! Your going round a bend putting your foot down on boost and you think it's gonna slide, its gonna slide and it doesn't! I think Big Dave was impressed when i took him for a spin in the wet.
