    1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

Just registered for this site so thought I'd better say hello.

A couple of months ago I picked up a 1968 Ford Anglia that was just too good to pass over.

It has had 2 previous owners, the first one was from new and put 44k miles on the clock, the second rescued it from deepest darkest East Anglia and started to tidy up and modify it.

So, I took over ownership after it has had the bulkhead pushed back, large tunnel, 5 link rear, coilovers all round, Escort World Cup front end with adjustable TCAs and Top Mounts, welded in half cage and from what i can see all of the panels are unwelded apart from these mods. It has had a bare metal respray in the original Ermin White and Anchor Blue colour scheme.

So, an excellent shell with lots of trick bit for me to complete (hopefully).

Since buying I have sourced a 1.7 Zetec SE to fit in the front which I am planning on keeping internally standard but adding bike throttle bodies, tubular exhaust and ecu. I am currently sorting out the brakes (Caprisport GTR260 and rear discs are currently favourite, XR4x4 based) and a bell housing, I have also got a pair of Corbeau classic clubman seats with head rests and a ETB Digidash (controversial !) to fit inside. Main jobs at the moment are to clean, build and trial fit the engine, get the crank spigot and hubs machines and then hopefully when we get a week of nice weather, clean up the underside, front and rear axles and paint (for some reason not done as part of the respray?). After that the car can start to be put back together.

So, I have a couple of things to sort out which any input/ideas/suppliers would be gratefully received, these are -

    1) Need to source a slimline water manifold for the back of the head (similar to Markus' Racing Escort and which others have used, aussie mk2 van, mk1 supercharged etc.)
    2) Any thought on the KBS rust prevention paint system (cleaner and metal prep), interested in this as it comes in off white to match the rest of the car
    3) Any thoughts on the Caprisport GTR 260 + rear disc combo (6x14 wheel look the most likely)
    4) Anyone know what gearbox mount I need, holes are approx 35mm and 190mm apart - see underside pic below

Finally here are a couple of pictures of the current state of play, if you need to see more I have a build blog going at www.Anglia1968.weebly.com

    Cheers chris52,

lucky for me the hard work has been done (in my case that means the art that is bodywork) so hopefully is more like a kit car which I have experience with. Going to take it fairly steady but would like it on the road before next years goodwood revival with an ambition to make the 2015 Anglias at the ace if there is one.

I'll try and keep this up to date.

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

    Quick update -

    1) Started cleaning up the engine and stripping it down to the bare essentials
    2) Been sourcing a load of bits that I do not have (boot handle, front indicators, door locks) and bought a pair of Corbeau Classis clubmans
    3) Had a go at placing the engine in the hole - see below - sump bowl will need moving to the front, loads of space for inlet, exhaust and rad (engine can move rearward by another inch)
    4) Identified the Caprisport GTR260 and rear disc conversions will fit my car (with 6x14s) so will get those ordered

    Problems -

    1) There is a casting on the back of the engine that needed removing (would shift the engine 100mm+ forward) and is going to cost a bit for a low level part, but at least I have a solution
    2) Tried to remove the sump but on this car is it glued on, may need a special tool to help remove it without taking chunks out of the block or sump

Updates on the blog - anglia1968.weebly.com

First engine fit - lost almost lost on the hole !

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

I have a quote from a company that can bore out the end of the crank to 21mm to fit the standard sierra/pinto bearing. This can be done in situ so does not need the crank removing.

There are reports on the web that you can DIY this using a Magdrill (days rental was more than the quote !) but I wouold prefer to get someone who knows what they are doing to do it.

The other option is to grind down the input shaft of the gearbox to 12mm and RWD Motorspot do a smaller bearing for this, but this renders the gearbox pretty much useless for any thing else.

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

Your Anglia look really nice, lover the red leatrher interior and the seats look similar to mine only in leather and red.

I did think about the blacktop zetec for my car but having already done a silver top on bike carbs (chester sports cars kit, well recommended, bolt on, turn the ket and off you go 165 Hp under your foot) into a Fisher Fury I wanted another challenge and something a bit different. The Zetec would probably have been easier and cheaper but where's the fun in that! The puma engine seemed to fit the bill and I don't think I have seen one in an Anglia before (some in escort/cortina/kit cars but normally the 1.6 is used so again aniother challenge).

Love to see pics of the Avenger. Again I looked at a 1972 Viva 2 door and doing a restomod on that but the Anglia was too good to turn down.

Got a couple of quotes, waiting for final prices with delivery, looking to get the bell housing, clutch fork and water manifold as a package. I have a release bearing and spigot bearngs are easy to get. Suppliers are shawspeed, rdw motorsport, tiger sportscars, westfield and caterham for info. Looks like an expensive month as I am also sourcing brake brackets and will need discs, pads and a clutch fricton plate.

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

Update - not done a huge amount other than maxed the credit card on parts, so -

Bought - bellhousing and clutch fork, Caprisport GTR260 and rear disc brake brackes (got XR4x4 calipers), front discs, clutch plate, spigot bearing

In the process of cleaning up the calipers ready for painting, done a few more measurements on the engine fit, CADing up a few brackets etc., remove the sump for cleaning.

I also weighed the engine so for reference -

1.7 Puma Zetec SE - bare engine with flywheel, cast exhaust manifold (not down pipe), front idler bracket and idler, half full of oil = 88kg
1.7 Puma Zetec SE - as above but with alternator, starter and motorcycle throttle bodies = 98kg (i.e pretty well a full install)

Will update this once I have the bell housing and can then get a gearbox + engine assembly weight.

So, still in progress is - get the front hubs and crank spigot bearing cavity machined, buy paint for underneath the car (KBS products probably as they do Off White), finish cleaning and paining calipers, dry foir the engine and gearbox to look at position/mounts/brackets/ancilliaries etc.

Nice project! Seen it over on 105Speed as well. I think you're doing the right thing going with injection from the start. Nothing wrong with carbs (I have ZX6Rs on my Zetec) but that was the third iteration of carb I've done! If I'd been a bit more patient and spent a bit more money I'd have gone TBs too. But I can't be arsed changing it all now for such little gain.

Good luck with it! Looks like a great shell to have a start from.

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

DBrown67, thanks for the comment, much appreciated.

I had the Chester Sports Cars bike carb set up on a Silvertop in my Fisher Fury and was very happy with that (literally, bolted it on, connected it up, two turns of the key and it was running smmoth as a smooth thing), but the Zetec SE is a bit more "interesting" as it has the VCT system to cope with. I think the extra control of the injection will help. There is a guy on locostbuilders with a Sylva J15 with the same engine, tubular exhaust, omex 600 ecu and GSXR 42mm throttle bodies (almost identical to my set up, different bits though) and his made ust over 150hp so anything close to that and I'd be happy.

Agree, the shell is in amazing condition, yesterday I finished removing all of the old underseal so the underside is back to basics and prepped ready to paint, have not found any welded plates or any holes so look like it is as I was told (a 44k car used for shopping trips and pretty much all original). The car is now in the garage fully drying out over this week ready for underside painting next week. All of the additional welding for the rear suspension etc. done by Whitspeed is very high quality so it looks like I picked up a good 'un.

So, hopefully by the end of the next week I can start the fun part of putting it all back together.

Did you chassis mount the engine of use a crossmember? I think the passengers side is going to cause problems and i was wondering how you got round it

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

1700pumapower - I have not mounted the engine yet, remembering that my bulkhead has been pushed back quite a bit -

I have a modified escort world cup cross member that i was hoping to use but the mounting holes in the block are right at the front (AC and power steering pump mounts I think) and also the WC bobbin mounts get right in the way of the oil filter and the exhaust. So I am planning on mounting a bracket on the side chassis rail and then mounting the engine on that using a fairly simple cantilever mount on Land Rover bobbins. The oinly downside is that i will have to chop up the cross member to remove the mount arms but a small price to pay as this way is a lot easier and neater.

The guy with the racing Escort from scandinavia did something similar -

    http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...=145051&page=4 - post 5/12/09

Here is a quick schematic of the options - looking like I can go with a variant of the bottom one but will know a bit more at the end of next week when i have had a trial fit with the gearbox attached -

Im going to relocate the oil filter to the inner wing in the hope the extra space is helpful, theres a guy in oz thats got one of these engines in a red van and he has used the standard crossmember and engine mounts but theres only a pic of the drivers side, his is the one with the fabricated alloy sump in the above thread

Re: 1968 Anglia Newbie - Hello

I did look at that with the Mocal remote filter system but a little worried about the moment placed on the fixing bolts and aluminium castings in the head from having the mount quite a way back on the engine. Mounting the the chassis like the blue escort (and trimming down the cross member) also give me a bit more room around the steering column for the exhaust and also the tandem brake master cylinder I am hoping to use (with a Mk2 Escort pedal box). Are you putting your Puma engine in an Anglia then or an Escort, pictures would be great, please feel free to put them in here ?

Sound like a good project - really nice mk1 4dr went on ebay today, Malta import looked very clean and a bit of a bargain at £2400 IIRC.

Sumpwise - same as you I came to the conclusion that a fabricated one from steel would be better than trying to bodge the existing ally one (of unknown alloy?). I am in contact with someone who may be able to make me one as I have zero welding skills. I will be cading up the top face to be laser cut from sheet steel and then build down from there, going for something similar to the red escort van (front bowl) and modifying the pickup to go into that although I may look at a rear bowl as this may be easier to lengthen the pickup. Know more next week hopefully.

Have you managed to get hold of the rear water manifold yet ? And what ECU/inlet etc are you doing or you keeping it stock for now ? And finally any thoughts on exhaust, if you can weld Spence Ashley does a kit for the Zetec SE at a reasonable cost.

As for ecu, im going to use megajolt and run twin 40 dellortos on a custom manifold from danst engineering, as for exhaust im using a pinto 4 branch manifold welded to a zetec se exhaust flange from danst

Are you using the 1.7 Puma Engine? If so what are you doing about the VCT with the dellortas and MS ? I looked into the pinto manifold, are the ports positions similar, any info on this would be useful ?

SOund like you have a plan, hope it comes together well.
