    Rear speakers in a cabriolet

    Hi
I've taken the speakers i had in one car and have put them in the rear side panels of my cab and now when i turn up the volume the distortion is terrible.
It's not a major ice set up i got just the basics, when the speakers were in the ohther car the sound from them was good
can someone tell me why they sound so sh*t now and is there anything i can do to improve the sound quality?
    Thanks

I think the problem would probably be the panels themselves causing the distortion. To fix it my guess would be to try to get hold of some of the stuff ford use on the front doorcards, its kinda like blue-tac but more sticky and slap some of that on the mounting part of the body.

Re: Rear speakers in a cabriolet

Are you sure they are wired up correctly? ie + to + and - to - ? This would cause distortion. The easy way to check which terminal on a speaker is the + (they aren't always labelled) is to use an AA sized battery and 2 bits of wire, connect each terminal on the speaker to an end on the battery and look at the front of the speaker when doing this, you will see the cone move, if it move towards you (out) then the + side of the battery is the + terminal, if the cone moves into the speaker then the + side of the battery is the - terminal.

The stuff Dave is on about id called dynamat, available from any good car audio store, it's a vibration deadening material, but it won't stop your speakers distorting, it stops panels vibrating.

This would involve cutting big chunks out of it Slim, and i think this is where the hood stays when it is down, if memory serves me right (my sister had one a couple of years ago), but i could be wrong

Re: Rear speakers in a cabriolet

i got some dynamat extreme on all my door speakers from www.unbeatablecaraudio.com it has helped a bit but not alot cos mine are very loud 6 x 9's which should really be on the parcel shelf (getting rearranged soon). your better off with nice component speakers like focals in doors or side panels.

you could buy a shelf from a scrappy to cut up and stick them in there or go down the MDF route (like on changing rooms!)

i know someone who breaks fords and sells all the bits online and by post if you need a shelf, his site is www.mondeopart.com

Re: Rear speakers in a cabriolet

Think i might have to get some decent speakers for the panels as i can't really cut the parcel shelf cos the roof covers it when it's down.
I've heard that focals are pretty good!

how about foot well mounted speakers or subs, you can get the boxes made for them or buy them already made

yeah! I got front footwell speakers mounted but only the originals! i don't really want to spend loads of dosh on speakers just yet! Just want to get 2 reasonable pairs for the front and back for the time being.

Re: Rear speakers in a cabriolet

when i had an XR3i i mounted 5.25" mid bass units in the front footwells (after making some pods for them to fit) and mounted the tweeters at the bottom of the windowscreen, right in the corners, so they faced up at the screen, this made the sound bounce back into the car and gave excellent high end sounds, when i could hear them, as i also had a pair of 12" earthquake subs in the boot, 1000W RMS of sub bass, so i didn't hear much else, mostly felt sound

Please don't say things like that around Sapphy, he's easily excited and will go all "Dale Winton" just like that
