Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

    Hi all,

I just recently acquired a Mazda MZR 2.0L L series engine and 6 speed manual gearbox from a 2007 MX5 that i want to fit to my Mk1 Escort.

A few weeks ago i got a wet sump, engine mounts and lowered rack cross member to fit the engine. (retroford stuff)

I was wondering if anyone has used this engine before in an escort, I thought that there were very few differences between the Mazda L engine and the Duratec, but now that i have the motor i am seeing a few more,

first thing i noticed is that the mazda motor has a dipstick that passes through the rocker cover, head, block and finally into the sump. Also the Mazda motor has VVT but i already new this one,
Obviously there is the angle that the mx5 runs the motor at, but i dont think this will be a drama at all.

Any information anyone can provide would be fantastic!

    Cheers

Will fit in just fine, mount the engine upright as normal, gearbox will sit at a 10 degree angle (make sure you fill the gearbox when it is upright or tilt car 10 degrees), see my Resto thread for details

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

Had a go at getting the MX5 motor ready for installation into my Mk1 Escort, and i have found a few more differences between the Duratec and the Mazda L engine, even though the MX5 motor has FoMoCo all over it.

The RetroFord engine mounts fit great and even clear the Mazda Oil filter housing!

However the sump fouls the internal oil pump and the feed pipe to the pick up hits one of the main bolts, i think i remember reading on this forum that there are two different oil pumps for this motor a standard and a high flow? Any thoughts on this?

Also for the oil pickup pipe it has a bracket that is supposed to be bolted to the block, the Mazda motor ofcourse has no hole for this
Should be a simple drill and tap to fix this though.

Hopefully someone can shed some light about the pump hitting the sump.

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

Ok so a few hours searching the internet has turned up some information. There are a few different oil pumps used on the Duratec, the 2.0L and 2.3L use a different pump that has the inlet pipe coming in at a very different angle.

The Mazda one that i have seems to be very similar to the Duratec 2.3L unit, so really i probably should have bought a wet sump kit to suit the 2.3L, however since i have the 2.0L unit im guessing it's going to be quite a bit cheaper but possibly more difficult to replace the oil pump with the standard 2.0L Duratec unit.

Going to try and buy one today, any advice on changing the oil pump would be greatly appreciated.

    Cheers

Not in a huge rush, just bolted the standard sump back on in the meantime, was thinking of ordering one from Burton as i need to get a water rail at some point soon as well.

DIY water rail is a lot cheaper, using Cosworth YD8100 water outlet, bit of 32mm pipe and a 90 degree bend silicone hose.

If you want a pump, I can send you one for $100 inc Fedex to you in Aus. The pump has never been run and is from a brand new 2014 Focus 2.0 Block

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

Thanks for the offer Dobuy, but am starting to backpedal on the idea a bit. Been reading some directions on changing the oil pump and am not the most experienced mechanically.

Also the tools i would need to buy to swap the pump would probably cost me near as much as another sump suited for the 2.3L, so now considering the prospect of selling the sump i have and ordering a new one.

Will do some further research and let you know what i decide, thanks for the generous offer again.

    Cheers

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

Recently contacted Retroford and according to them the 2.3L sump kit is a no go as well, so onwards with the pump swap, have been searching this forum and others for information on changing the oil pump and was wanting to know,

Do i really need to remove the timing chain to change the pump? Was hoping if i remove the pump gear i could simply let the oil pump chain hang while the pump is changed.

My other question is how do i get the Main Pulley bolt off! Going to have to go and buy a rattle gun of some sort by the looks of it. But how do you stop the motor from turning?

    Cheers

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

A good rattle gun will remove the front bolt, otherwise I lock the flywheel with a tool I made up that bolts on
You can also use the flat end of a largish crowbar in against the flywheel teeth, locked against the upper side of the starter motor port (this works well when engine is in car)

As soon as you remove the pulley or front cover you are going to have to re-set the timing of the engine. Changing oil pump is a matter of 4x10mm bolts and is dead easy to do.
To be honest, the first time you do time the engine, it seems really scary working with all the sprockets and chains, but if you take it all apart when it is at TDC, use the timing pin tool and set the cam position using a suitable piece of flat bar, it is really quite easy.
Manuals here if you need them

Re: Duratec vs Mazda MZR L I4

My first post here in these forums. Just popping in to say hi and big thanks to dobuy for putting up the manuals!!! I am about to embark in fitting a Duratec into my '68 Viva wagon (budget build- you'll love it, it'll be a giggle) and I've been trawling the nets for a downloadable workshop manual from a link that wasn't going to take me to some Russian shoe warehouse etc etc

    Thanks for saving me.

OK then. I'll do a thread..but rather than type it all out I can just copy a link in to my build thread on Oldschool.co.nz and then update from then on :-)

How low is that after market pan that its shallower than the MX5 pan? The MX5 pan is the most shallow front sump wise of the stock pans, followed by the Ranger. THe MX5 pan is nice because its setup to tip the engine at 10deg to make it easier to clear hoods and clear exhausts. Con being that you probably cant use off the shelf swap mounts.
