    L8 ECU / dwell regulation

    Hello

Anybody knows how the L8 ECU regulates the dwell ?
It's in the eprom map or other part of the ecu.

I assume the ignition amplifier is a "dumb" module? Only transisitor.

    I mesured the dwell and found thid results 1000rpm/17msec, 1200/11, 1500/3, 1800/3, 2000/3, 2500/3, 3000/2.5, 4000/2.5, 5000/2.2.
Must tell that my oscillocoop is a bit old ,so values may be not 100% but very close.

Is someone has other results please react.

    Thx
    Patrick

Did some more research on the ignition.

In the picture the top line is the signal to the marelli module ( pin 24 and 25 from ecu )
On the bottom lin you see the current trough the coil.
As you can see it is the module who is calculating the dwell time (+- 4msec) and the ecu gives the exact spark time.
Even at low revs the dwell time stay's +- 4 msec.
I think the marelli module is a "smart" module , not only transistors.

Re: L8 ECU / dwell regulation

    Hi Jonathan
    Hi

Did first test today ( and it worked !) of the PIC controlled ignition driver.
It calculates the dwell I program for the whole rev range.
Works on the output signal from the marelli ECU.
Just add the Bosch BIP373 coil driver and a high current coil ( as I go from 6.5 amps to +- 11 amps ! primary current ) and I have almost the double spark energy.

Re: L8 ECU / dwell regulation

Sorry your right the ignition dwell is controlled by the BKL3 module.

I was thinking about injector timing. DOH!

Would be good to modify the output so we can use standard Bosch modules like the 200 twin amp

Re: L8 ECU / dwell regulation

    Hi Clint

I will do some more test first with a crane coil.
Then i will post the schematics , the assembler file and the circuit board i made for this.
I think you can put any "DUMB" power amplifier after this controller , starting from the marelli (or other brand suited) ECU signal + program the dwell time you like ( in 0.256 ms increments ).
NOT the firing point itself !!
This remains controlled by the ECU.

The signal has to be an 0-5V signal and firing at the negative flank as seen on the picture above.

Re: L8 ECU / dwell regulation

    Hi

Build the circuit board today and tested it.
Temperature was fine after one hour at 4000 rpm.
    BIP373 at +- 60°C , coil at +- 80°C.

Click image for larger version Name:	Foto-0042.jpg Views:	151 Size:	143.9 KB ID:	71437

On the pictures you see the circuit , the crane coil and the scope image at 4000 rpm.
The dwell was programed at 4.2 msec ( and is produced correctly as you can see at the image ) and the max current to the coil is +- 11A.
More dwell puts the coil in saturation and only heats up the coil.
Bottom signal is output from the PICprocessor.

This dwell remains the same from 600 rpm to 5800 rpm , then the 4.2 dwell time begins to decline as the spark is at 1 msec there is not enough cycle time . ( for a 4 cylinder engine with one coil )
But still more than enough spark energy.
With a dwell at 4 msec the limit would be at 6000rpm.

The spark energy at 4.2msec , this coil and 11 amp is 282 mJoule !!! which is very strong.

Next test in the car .

Re: L8 ECU / dwell regulation

    Hi

Did the first miles today with my dwell control box ( set at 3.25 msec ) and the LX91.
All ok , coil stays very cool (35°C ° )

I will take some pictures from installation tomorrow.

And running and firing coils for COP is vastly different to a stronger single coil.
