4x4 cossie ....what fluids and where
Nearly finished rebuilding my 4x4 cossie engined Dax Rush (should be finished in time for the weather to take a turn for the worse), anyway I need a little bit of technical know how, what oil should I put in the front diff and what oil do I put in the transfer case. When I've got the oil its obvious where it goes in the diff and I know how much, but which hole is the filler hole for the transfer case, I don't have a manual which covers the MT75 4x4 box only the earlier type 9 variant. Also I have installed a water swirl pot to get rid of air in the system, my radiator also has a small take off at the top which would normally return to the header tank, now I have a swirl pot is it neccessary to also have a return from the radiator as well (do standard cossies have a small return from the radiator or not?). What I want to do is blank the small radiator return off, any ideas anyone.

if you look at the drain plug for the gearbox (it's below the fill plug), then look right and up abit, you will see the fill plug for the transfer box. This uses ATF, 0.5 litres. The gearbox itself uses dedicated MT75 oil, don't use anything else, and uses 1.2 litres of this. The front diff (as the rear) uses a 75/90 synthetic oil, 1 litre.
I'm not to sure about the radiator bit, cossie rads don't have a take-off. I'd of thought you could have just used the one fromt he rad and do away with the swirl pot, as they are effectivly doing the same thing ???

Cheers Wes, transfer case now topped up as well as the front diff. As regards the water system bit, I was keener to keep the swirl pot as I believed that by its design it it should swirl the water and allow the air to be pushed to the top where as this is not the case for the rad, I'll try it and see what happens.

Hi Rick
I have seen your mates car before, it was originally built by a guy in St Albans and tuned by SCC performance. He did a very good job. When I work out how to send pictures I'll put some up.

Im curious why you shouldnt use anything else than specified for the gearbox?
I was recommended to use Mobil 1 75w/90 SHC LS all around, even in the gearbox and has done so for more than 5 years without any problems. Been told it "protects" the gearbox better than the ATF.

i was just thinking about changing my oils on my 4x4 and had read in various places that i shoudl use castrol TAF-X 75w90 gear oil in everything from gearbox to transfer and diffs.
