Not sure if you've driven a Cosiie before. But if so what's a Pinto turbo like to drive in comparison to say a standard/stg 1 YB?

haha yeah my little brother has a t25 escort cossie running around 280bhp, They both give a totally different feeling of fast as the cossie is so planted when driven hard. The mk2 is a totally different experience, it has alot of turbo lag and gives you a real kick in the dry and lets just say it keeps you very alert in the wet!! Not had a chance to run them together yet but will keep you posted...

Still fine tuning the pinto turbo tho, as only just fitted the turbo retard dizzy so need another dyno session now. It feels alot better than the static dizzy i was using before but I have also uncreased the boost since the last dyno run so hoping for much improved results.

What ignition systems have people here used in the past for this type of setup?

If you're on a budget, the likes of Megajolt or some sort of electronic control over timing would be a worthwhile addition.

You should be able to fit a system and still retain that old classic look. A lot handier than messing with dizzy advance weights etc, and should make it a little more lively everywhere.
MJ might require a coilpack, but there are defo systems out there that will let you retain a single coil and dizzy if you want to.

    Superb build though !

Cheers all. Always good to hear feedback.

As for going to a megajolt or similar which i am thinking of doing.. as it will give much better results nd control over the ignition. I was wondering do these ignition systems account for a map sensor to control ignition retard when gaining boost pressure?

    Re: Mk2 Escort Pinto Turbo

MJ uses MAP vs RPM as the main load axis. It requires a 36-1 trigger wheel mounted to the crank and a suitable sensor. It would also require fitment of a MAP sensor. Both fairly easy to do.

So yes timing is always taken car of with regards to boost ( and vacuum )

Only thing with MJ, you must use an EDIS module/coilpack as far as I'm aware

Some of the other systems would be more flexible and allow a variety of ignition systems.

Another option to consider, is choose/buy a full fuel/sparks ecu but only use sparks for now. It just gives you more options for the future if you decided to go full EFI, as half the install is already done

Plus you can still use the ecu for logging things etc

    Re: Mk2 Escort Pinto Turbo

Sounds good. When i first got the engine running i was using a standard locked out dizzy which worked fine but you could feel the flat spots when the ignition timing was out. Car made 170bhp using that dizzy nd running 8spi boost. The car is now much better with the dizzy upgrade nd running 12-14psi. Not had it back on the rollers yet but just from trial setup on the roads its much quicker nd smoother. From adjusting the dizzy i can get it to have really impressive top end on full boost but then runs a tad rough lower down so thinking a good timing setup will smooth things out and get the most from the setup. Really keen to stick with the carbs as its very unique nd quite oldskool. Also makes a very unique sound :-)

    Re: Mk2 Escort Pinto Turbo

I agree the carbs are pretty cool.

An ecu that had logging ability would be handy. You could log basics like MAP, rpm, temperatures as well as AFR's. Whilst they wouldnt have any direct control over fueling, it can be very helpful with tuning and general running.

Another cheap competitor to MJ is Nodiz. Maybe worth looking at.

    http://www.nodiz.co.uk/nodizpro-features.html

Cant comment on how well either work though as never used them specifically.

Like that a lot! I would second the MJ route. Very easy and the results are in a different league.
I wanted a set of those DHLA45M carbs for my engine but ended up with cheaper bike carbs instead.

Last time on the rollers it was only running 8psi boost and was missing a bit due to the actuator sticking and had a standard locked advance dizzy on it and it made 170bhp

got the actuator sorted now and the boost upped to 12-14psi now and have cured the missing with a turbo pressure retard dizzy and its a completely different car from the last dyno session.. so will keep you guys posted on what the results are after the next dyno run.

What would people expect from this type of setup?

    Cheers all for the comments

Sounds good as that the region i was hoping for. Time will tell. Do you know if that capri was using a dizzy or ECU for ignition?

I have also been thinking about electronic boost control. Are these easy systems to use and fit? If so is there any particular reconmendations?

    Cheers

    Re: Mk2 Escort Pinto Turbo

when I boosted a carb pinto I just used the standard vacuum advance dizzy but plumb the vacuum line into the servo line, this way it was pulling max vacuum advance at idle, then time the dizzy in as normall. the dizzy works perfectly whilst driving using the centrifugal weights to advance the timing but then as you come on to boost it's no longer pulling on the vacuum advance so actually retards it by about 4 degrees. it was extremely drivable and worked flawlessly even up to odd occasion when I ran up to 18psi.

Cool, I got a dizzy made by H&H ignitions and they have reversed the vacume advance to retard the timing at 5psi boost. the weights were then done to match the specs for the lotus esprit dizzy and it seems to be working grand. Just wondered if going down and ECU route would unlock a tad more from the engine.

    Cheers

an ecu will always be better and easier to tune but that's not to say a dizzy can't work just aswell if set up right.

Its a set of forrest arches in fibreglass with internal mounting lips so they can be smothed off external with no visiable rivets etc. If you look at the link to scottisholdskoolescorts above I think there is a few pics of me putting them on. There also seem to be two variations of forrest arches and the main difference is in the front arches. Some sets stay wide on the return back edge of the fron wheel or like my set they taper back in to the body line and the front edge tapers to meet the mex front splitter.

They do however take quite a bit more work to get them looking right than using the alloy arches but think the end result is much cleaner

Have you got a single piece prop or a 2 piece? I'm just about to fit the MT75 box in mine but need to sort a prop out. Been told that it is possible to run a single piece prop with a sliding section in.

    Re: Mk2 Escort Pinto Turbo

Here is a sneeky wee hint for the prop.

Get a transit 2 piece prop, so you have the rear sliding section. then break the centre uj and the front one from the fixed section then move the front flange to the sliding section front uj and hey presto you have a single piece prop for mk2 escort and mt75 gearbox. see if you can get a transit prop measured us as cant remember what wheelbase one it is that you need. I ran mine like this for a while but as it was off an old transit it was needing ballenced so i then took that opertunity to swap to a heavier duty one made by 105speed.

    hope that helps

Well the escort has recently undergone a small rebuild / upgrade to a new T04e turbo and AEM thruboost controller along with a cometic head gasket to deal with the boost :-)
