Hi,
Hoping someone can tell me the differences from normal Capri and Capri 2.8I struts?
Thanks
2.8s were Bilstien's if I remember correctly.

as far as im aware, the only difference is that they have a gas/oil insert and its mounted upside down compared to the oil only ones. could be wrong though.
the strut casing is also different for that reason, the bilstein damper insert is totally different to the other damper inserts and they are not interchangeable.
The spring platform heights vary too, 2.8's being the lowered stance type.
Mark,
When u say "totally different" are the tubes made of chrome moly ????
No it's just the Bilstein tubes are machined differently with a small threaded hole in the bottom and a bush and seal at the top (bit like a motorcycle fork lower leg) and the others are just a plain tube no bushes with a thread on the inside of the tube at the top for a retaining nut.
Ok,
Coming clean here then.
I bought some Capri strutts.
They were sold to me as 2.8Is. I didnt know shit from clay, relatively
They were not.
In the process of finding this out I collected the attached info.
The last piece to the puzzel, was that someone mentioned they have moly legs.
Note also at bottom of pic, brake mounts are thicker.
Thanks for your help.

Corrections/Amendments to any of this appreciated.
Bearings.
This info is great I have just identified a pair of new unused struts I had for years and years in the garage. They are Escort mk1 T/C,Mexico,RS1600. The monroe inserts will need replacing though.
NR-Boyz,
Can u get some pics up.....the TwinC units are said to have spring seat in different position !
Will do but don't look like they are different.
Right I have borrowed a dig camera.
The twink/mex/RS16 struts have the spring seats the same position as the capri 2.8 billies and the same as mk2 1600sport struts but when compared to the mk2 RS Mexico struts. The RS mexico strut spring seats are higher (see pic attached)
The black painted strut is the mk1 T/C. The pic on the last post was the mk2 Mex strut. These ones are the 2.8 billy and the mk2 1600sport, notice the top spring cup is taller on the sport strut. Why is the seat higher on mk2 mex strut comapred to mk2 sport strut?

Are you sure that is a 1600 Sport Strut, I can't see the steering arm to tell for sure. If it has a bolt on steering arm it is not an original Sport strut, it must have had Capri/RS ones fitted at some time.
All Mk2 Escort except RS/Mex have a strut with a smaller diameter spring platform, and a cast steering arm (not a seperate bolt on part like the RS Escorts (Mk1 and 2) and Capri and Bilstein ones) The springs used by standard type Escorts and RS type (or Capri) are different coil diameters.
They also use a metric track rod end where it goes through the steering arm (RS/Capri etc are UNF)
As for why the seat heights differ, I think that is a question only the designer will know the exact answer to, perhaps they were trying to acheive a certain ride height with springs that were "off the shelf" from another model.
are they really any advantages between the twin cam, capri and standard mk2 struts (excluding the bilstein ones).
SidewaysMk1
Ifnya were to read the whole thread, including the attachments, u wouldn't need asking that.
Guys, The part numbers will tell.
These are TwinC, but only bottom bit! Someone said spring perches were in different spot. Just tryin to sort it out.
Thanks.
Also someone asked...like along time ago, about these mirrors. They are STD on a lot of fords here in OZ.

You would be right, I was assuming they were 1600sport as we had scrapped a Yw 4dr MK2 sport yes rare but it had been in this guys drive for well over 12yrs and it was rotten we got it for nothing and stripped it, it had a rs2 front stuck on it and this suspension with 3.54:1 axle and decambered single leafs. Anyway the steering arms are part of the casting, so they must be capri but the discs are not vented, were 1.6 and 2.0 brake spec the same? they appear to have m16 calipers.
As you you can see I now have a choice too convert the 2.8 billies or the RS struts with top adjustables.
I got a chance to buy some adjustable tca's (not in situ) but they were off a mk1 capri, would they have enough down adjustment for the escort track considering I may get adjustable top mounts as well?
Photos speak for themselves yes the twincam/Mexico/RS1600 struts have lower spring seats like the capri struts.NR-Boyz,
Can u get some pics up.....the TwinC units are said to have spring seat in different position !
the thread doesn't say that much..........but if u put coil overs and strenghing plates on the each strut would one have an advantage over the other.
ps. by advantages i mean...
are the steering arsm the same lenght on mk1/mk2
do different cause different camber settings because of there setup and stance on the car or is it only cosmetic....
just to add avo now do top adjustable inserts for billes.
do mk1, twin cam have the same size bearing in the back of the hub is it only the capri that have the bigger bearings.
