Hi all. I might be getting a cheap renault 5 turbo for a winter/track car. Does anyone know what to look for in these motors? (apart from the shit turbo's they have).
Also, anyone know the best place for insurance on one is?
Cheers

Headgasket, everytime. Also, watch out for the Burberry baseball caps littered around inside.
Erm tailgates sometimes rust at the bottom of the rear window rubber, check bodykit isnt smashed as its fibreglass (usually one of the front corners has been hit against curbs) i think the doors rust too. Check the oil seals arent fooked in the turbo, standard clutches usually die quick, headgaskets also die if the boost is upped too much. Also as u prob know they are made of tinfoil so check for accident damage as im sure you will. Thats all from what i can think is wrong with me mates one and my bros old one
HTH's
FPMSL!!! I'll steer clear of those thenThats all from what i can think is wrong with me mates one and my bros old one
well, im only paying £400 for it, needs tax, but i can use it over the winter then, The body work is mint apart from a small rust patch on the tailgate (about 5p size).
Its not an investment or anything so what do you reckon?
Cheers

400 quid fun! Nab it, and sell it to me afterwards (I've always wanted a play in one!).
Ignore my other posts, I'm only taking the piss.
I bought one as a project car a few years ago, £200 and just needed the clinder head putting back on after a headgasket failure and then lack of interest
What a crap decision i made there
The head was already skimmed and a new gasket set came with it so i rebuilt it all only to find that it smoked like a steam engine
New turbo needed then
Car then ran well apart from water pissing out the radiator.
New radiator then
Well the car was now running allright so i decided to run a bit more boost (as you do )after some carb rejetting and then the heatshield decided it didnt like the extra heat and collapsed onto the hotter than standard turbo creating a slight fire (yes i thought it would be flame proof ) and a excellent smoke screen from the engine bay
And a common problem with a lot of 5's is that the drivers seat frame collapses as well just when you dont need it
Another job for the mig that was
In the end i sold it for around £850 which lost me a couple hundred quid, but also lost me a daily headache which this thing caused me
When it was going well it was top fun to drive, but most of the time it was like being kicked in the balls on a daily basis
It was more of a money pit than what my cossie has been in the last nearly four years for sure.
I tryed to buy one of those turbo raiders before look nice wee cars ok for that money
Myself I would go for the Uno Turbo. Cheeper and more reliable
My mates one only has the rusty tailgate and bottom of drivers door. His is a phase 1 (black bodykit version) and is completely original apart from a big bore exhaust and his dad has owned it from new. Valued at something like £4k and apart from rust if fecking mintFPMSL!!! I'll steer clear of those then
My bros on the other hand was fine til the bloke he sold it to got his mits on it Was great fun tho i remember him wheelspinning it all the way down one of the backroads near my house in 1st and 2nd oh and it only cost £150 with a spare stg1 head and carb, spare turbo, etc... fixed clutch and wheelbearings and sold it for £500 and some mk1 ecy spares
Excellent
4k! [shocked] Wow, fair play to him for that.
Phase 1 are sooooo much nice looking cars IMO.
Also have a look here mate as there a quite a good buying guide

a fiat more reliable
YEP UNO TURBOS ARE PRETTY GOOD IN THAT WAY
I like the R5 though, im only using it for the winter and maybe to work and back, as my mk1 uses too much fuel. Im gunna keep it standard boost, and just cane it really. Must be worth £400 surely? I hate uno's so i wont be getting one of those. Thanks for all your comments guys, appreciated.
Mike
Uno Turbos - Go very fast, especially around the sills.
You think your escort uses fuel. Cane an R5 even in standard form and they drink like chuff, even for a 1.4. A few of my friends have had em, one still does. Top little cars just a little temprimental and built like a biscuit tin!
LOL, thats what my old man said about them being like tin cans. Went out for a test drive in it today, they are fast as f*ck.

LOLHeadgasket, everytime. Also, watch out for the Burberry baseball caps littered around inside.
wicked little motor but a money pit mine was heavily tuned group a carb head and hybrid turbo i went through 6 g/boxes in 3 years /casing of box splits around 2 gear shaft and selector rod and front wheel bearings lasted about 2000 miles
but it was a giant killer up to 90mph only my mates heavily tuned cossie beat it that was 8 years ago and ive had several fast motors since then and none of them are as much fun i miss the cheeky little 5 , i work on mercedes all day long and even the SL 55 amg is not a patch of fun compared
Cheers mate, going to get it insured next month. Cant wait!!
Mike
classic go-kart, never really known them to be problematic with rust.
Easy to work on, so if head gasket was to go (they pop easy with too much boost) seriously is only about 1.30 hours work.
I've had a few and worked on alot. Cool car to have fun in, always makes you smile
nice!!!
Just an update really. Couldnt leave the car alone. Upped the boost to 14 psi, lowered it by 30mm, got some clio wheels and painted them black, induction kit and exhaust aswell. (wooops, spent too much on it already)I like the R5 though, im only using it for the winter and maybe to work and back, as my mk1 uses too much fuel. Im gunna keep it standard boost, and just cane it really.
Mike
But it is sooooo much fun, and i cane it to death, and it hasnt given me any problems at all yet. (touch wood )
Cheers

Just re-read your post - look for rust inside those clip on side sills, and signs of accident damage - these were like tinfoil so any damage rippled through the bodyshell like you wouldn't beleive. Also avoid anything that shows signs of water loss/overheating repair costs can be prohibitive.
good luck.
and if you carry on reading, i bought it ages ago, lol. And its been wicked so far....
