    ATLAS AXLE

I have seen advertised up here an "ATLAS AXLE" for what I think is a very reasonable price.

Haven't seen any photographs of it but know it is minus an LSD!

Would I be right in saying that if it's a "BABY" the casting will be 48" long?

    What is it worth?

How can I tell what it is?

Yes a baby atlas is 48" (Escort) a Narrow atlas is 50" (Mk1 Capri) and a wide is 52" (Mk2/3 Capri)

Watch out as there is also a oddball Atlas type that is 48" that was fitted in foreign Mk2 Escorts, but it aint the same, it's a kind of hybrid thing that I don't know much about yet, has english halfshafts, not sura about the diff yet till I pull one apart.

    Mark.
This diff came out in later MK1s.[dunno date reference] It is not highly regarded. It goes by the name of Borg Warner, due to its manufacturer. I doubt if u would get one over there.

    Darren,
A baby atlas will fit under a std arch as its the same width as an english,
I have seen narrow atlas axles fitted to std arched road rally escorts which used 6" alloys & the arch lip needs bending up. but you can't fit 7" alloys with this axle & std arches.

As for value if the axle case is in good nick and with half shafts I would say £150-£250.
if its a baby atlas then it could be worth up to £300 as genuine baby atlas shafts are now quite rare.

As a guide new remanufactured(original diff housing, new tubes) baby atlas case is £250 + the halfshafts.

Also be prepared to pay up to £450 for a cwp and LSD unit

    HTH

    Cheers
    Steve
