Had to always pump the throttle on my Mex about 6 times to get it to start from cold. So if it starts better that way go for it

its jsut hte car sounds like the batterys duff. which its not, cos when its new, and ive been using the car 2 weeks now. so the alternators obviously doing its job too.

do mk2's have electric fuel pumps in them, or is it just done by the peddal?

Does your car have an Autochoke?.

Look on the side of the carb for a dome shaped thing with two black water pipes coming out of it.

If it does you need to set the choke by slowly pushing the throttle to the floor an releasing it before cranking the engine.

If it doesn't then the afforementioned pumping will work, you will get used to the number of pumps it needs depending on how cold it has been overnight. (You will also learn how many is too many when you flood it )

    PMSL...

I just remembered that my mk1 used to need 23 pumps on the gas before you turned it over or it wouldn't start. It was running 40's on a very modified 13x-flow at the time. Good old laugh that. The neighbours loved me banging and farting away every morning... flames poping out of the carbs etc...

    MMMM 40's...

But i've got 50's on the engine for my Anglia ! That engine is mental... it's out of a national hotrod ! MOHAHAHA

Jono, also if it's a high compression engine it could sound as if the battery's struggling. If I didn't start my Mex within 4 or so goes - no chance - and I had to get the booster out

Re: starting the car up from cold...

don`t quote me on this as i`m no expert...

pre-engaged motors have the solenoid attached to the starter like a piggyback affair..

the others like on my mk1 x-flow use a seperate solenoid and the actual motor fits to the bellhousing..

have a look see what yours is as i`m not sure if mk11`s had pre-engaged or not.

don`t want you spending your hard earned on the wrong stuff mate

Re: starting the car up from cold...

In theory, but you can bypass the solenoid on the wing to make the pre engaged one work..but its a bit of a bodge cos the wires from the solenoid in the wing are extended and run to the solenoid on the starter, but the live or something is not connected....we did this on my mates mini as a nice bodge For you its probably best that you retract your bid and get the other type of starter
