I did the same - I listened to the pro's and con's for both and this way made more sense to me.

Although it hasn't had a proper race-test yet, the miles it has done would suggest it's possibly over-cooling - very difficult to get oil up to temperature. Smaller rad perhaps...

Are you going to mod the radiator so outlet is on same side as laminova?
The top is the return circuit so the temps in theory will be higher as the water will be heated by the engine before it returns to the rad. I took advise from mocal and a friend who works for Caterham that there should be no problems installed in this way, the only reason I went this route it was a lot easier to install.
The rad is from my last st170 engine with the inlet and outlet on the nearside made by Radtec it was very efficient and should be up to the task.

You said you are experiencing low oil and water temps, are you using water flow restrictor that fits into the Laminova and is your water pump ecu controlled.

    Yeah I agree,

Engine builders seem to err towards putting the laminova in the hot side, but the only justification I heard for doing this was because it'll pull the oil temp up to operating temp quicker. This is undeniably true, but for a race car that only gets started a handful of times in it's life (compared with a road car) then gently warmed up, I reckoned having cooler water in there, therefore bigger temperature differential, would be of more benefit. Having said that, you're now putting hotter water into the engine! So it's probably a case of swings and roundabouts... The overall cooling capacity is what's important. The main water rad is now actually cooling water and oil, so it has to be big enough.

Yes my pump is ECU controlled and plenty of scope for adjustment, and there's the option of fitting a restrictor in the laminova, but I'm going to wait for some proper test data before fiddling with anything.

Anyway, nice build! Lovely installation. Will be keeping an eye on this. Which exhaust manifold is that by the way?

It will be interesting to see what oil and water temps are seen when its next used in anger and how efficient the lamanova really is, having only ever used traditional oil coolers its all a learning curve.
One off the main reasons I like these coolers is the reduced oil warm up time and temp stability.

Like you say its all down to the main water radiator to control both oil and water temps, its possible I will need a more efficient rad, soon find out once some testing is done.

The exhaust manifold is a stainless SBD Motorsport item

one off the best Ive seen for the duratec and backed up with dyno testing

    And thanks for your comment

Finally the dry sump system is finished and primed using a air drill, as the oil was drawn through it slowed the air tool but was impressive to see nearly 50psi oil pressure with the pump turning quite slowly.

The fuel tank arrived from Pro Alloy and was quickly fitted along with the injection pump and pre filter, just need to finish the feed and return and that's the fueling sorted.

    Re: MK1 Duratec

Bit more progress on the wiring front, made a start on the ecu and relay box this will be fitted on the gearbox tunnel, just two wiring connectors and the side clips for easy removal, its a lot of work to source all the parts but will make for a very tidy install.

This is a variation of a idea from http://www.zetecinside.com/xr2/ who is also a member on this site

Can you buy those wiring connectors seperately? I re-routed my capri loom through the wing and was just going to use grommets but those bulkhead fittings would be a much better idea!

    Looking good though

Cheers, I did use the original Capri rubber bulkhead connectors but they're a bit oldhat, will try getting some of these and do the job right!

    Re: MK1 Duratec

Thought it was about time to sort out the rear valance been putting this off for awhile, prep and painting is such a time consuming process takes up so much time. So 1st thing was welding the old exhaust position and making a new cutout on the offside.

Started prepping the panel ready for paint

Bit of blue sorted glads that's out of the way

Adjustable clutch pedal stop sorted made up with some scrap parts

And to finish off the engine pulley brackets and belts are all now sorted

If I had known how much a decent high spec Duratec costs to build I think I've would have gone your new Smith and Jones inspired engine build instead

Top stuff, very neat and thorough.

Just a thought; can the ecu overheat/withstand the higher temperatures of being on top of the tunnel? (on the presumption the above picture shows the finalised location)

    Cheers

Should be in the region of 245 255bhp I am using the 45 jenveys from my oid setup which will lose some peak power, direct to head throttle body's will probably be fitted at a later date.

Cant see a problem with over heating but if the ecu does too hot a pc cooling fan is at the ready just in case

Is there any reason you went for a duratec instead of modifying the st engine further ?

I thought that the st had reached its limit power wise to push it further was to expensive, you cant rev the st without oil pump mods etc, I can get the duratec to a easy 260bhp+ with good torque the st engine cant compete.

Ok thanks for the reply does billet oil pump gears not fix the oil pump issue on the st

In my opinion no there is still a risk of oil pump gear failure at high rpm due to crank flex, the only safe option is a dry sump setup. There will be other views on this that the gears have fixed the problem but how many are used purely on the road and not flat out on a race circuit.

    Re: MK1 Duratec

The Escort has progressed really well over the last month there has been some annoying problems but most of the wiring is now completed including the Dash2 install, seats are in and its starting to look like it might be finished soon. Had some problems with the starter which has now been resolved(helps if you use the right one) water leak from the water pump blank mod and what looks like a dead alternator.

Some pics of the dash wiring all done by my son Simon who enjoys doing the wiring
