Thought it was about time to change to a Duratec engine the st170 made a solid 200bhp but not enough to keep up with duratec powered escorts on the track, this will be engine change number 4 and the very last one i change, well that's what i told the wife

The st170 has been sold to a friend and will be up and running in a Anglia soon, I hope the
duratec will be as faultless as the st was

Donor engine from a late 2007 st150 got this for a bargain price of £65 due to a bottom end knock, it was caught just in time with no crank damage only pickup on the big end bearings.





After binning most of the internals left with block crank head front cover and some odds and sods, never built a engine where you throw most of it away to start with.

Started the dummy ending build to sort the engine mount alignment out, Titan dry sump, rear billet water rail and the work of art manifold from all from SBD













Small mod to the head for the water rail

It was a bargain its one of the reasons I started the build, and the engine fits like a glove no clearance issues with the sbd exhaust was well worth the extra money. For me this is the most enjoyable parts of Escort ownership

Its from sbd http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Duratec/Cooli...components.htm reason I chose this one its away from the exhaust and I can use the same alloy rad from my st170 install

Staying with my Tranx gearbox until I can source a stronger box poss a quaife dog box later on

Heavy duty X member from Gartrac lowered rack mounts with dual tca holes http://www.gartrac.com/shop/gartrac-...ut-mounts.html

And this chassis mount kit from http://www.sbdev.co.uk/Duratec/Engine_Mounts.htm so to get the engine as low as poss

I use a standard Xmember with the engine mounts cut off the sump has about 1mm clearance from the solid rack mounts

That's close has the sump ever touched the mounts, I was looking at 6-8mm clearance

one of the sump bolts has warn a dent in the ally rack mount but apart from that its fine i also filed the lip off the back of the x member to make it easier to get the oil filter on the standard housing they don't really move on the mounts the retro ford manifold only has a few mm of clearance from the chassis leg never touched that it the same on Dave drag mk2 estate close but don't even burn the paint

The chassis mounts are next on the jobs to do list, going to drop the engine a tad closer now

Must admit that was a bit of a after thought bud but saves buying the after market housing.

I also bought a dry sump system for mine but I've never seen the need for it to be honest.

Doing the same made up a support with some old wood, just need to reduce the thickness to bring the engine down a bit more

I never intended to go the dry sump route sbd were out of stock of wet sumps and i was to inpatient to wait.

Lol. Just make shore you got a good tank or a good swirl pot they can pop a engine if they have air pockets in the oil system.

I know the duratec needs a tank with a min 5ltrs capacity and one with decent internals to get the air out of the oil. also looking to cut a recess in the o/s inner wing for a neat fit Ralloy do just the thing 1.5 gallon with a curved plate but its the size of a dustbin.

Ah fabrications where more than happy to make tank what I required. This was the first time they made tank with two returns, they where asking from me that am I sure I wan't two returns??! But they made what I wanted and it's piece of art that tank!
