    Anglia 105e project

Evening all, I'm fairly new on here but I also own a Mk1 Fiesta that I have restored to use as my daily so have slight experience.

I collected an Anglia 105e today from Luke via the forum, so thought I'd create a thread for the car. My thoughts are either a 1700 xflow or 2.0 Zetec lump, and to hill climb or have it for track use.
I began stripping it today and sorting out what will be needed, the body work does not seem too bad so far with hardly any new panels needed which is a bit of a result.

    Anglia 105e project

Carried on stripping her out this week and found a few rough patches.
The front o/s inner wing has seen some repairs and a lot of rot so I will be replacing it with a whole new inner wing

The n/s inner wing was sorted out by a previous owner so only a bit of tlc needed

After removing much of the under seal with engine degreaser and a blade, I had uncovered some holes and dodgy patches which will be cut out and replaced at some point in the near future.
All in all it seems a pretty decent shell, with the floor mostly patched up already

    Thanks for looking

    Anglia 105e project

Only a small update this week, cut off the front end due to having too much rot to feasibly sort out.

I've started to design up a spaceframe type front end that will weld onto a full cage, hopefully cutting down on costs (£300 for an inner wing!) as well as stiffening the front end up a bit.

    Anglia 105e project

The bulkhead and front floor pans were next to go, leaving in a couple of bits of chassis so the shell doesn't deform quite as much during storage as well as the soda blasting booked for January

Got some box section for the chassis, as well as a rear Diff and shafts from a Sierra Cosworth to incorporate into the new chassis/IRS design. Thanks for looking

    Anglia 105e project

Thanks for all the comments, there's not too much to update due to university work, I've now cut all of the tubing to length ready to weld up for the chassis. Had a little practice today, having never properly welded before, especially on 3mm thick tubing.

Hopefully more to update by monday

I managed to weld up the base of the chassis this afternoon as hoped, the welds weren't particularly clean looking but the penetration is all there so I'm happy.

Next up is to do a bit more to the chassis, buy a full weld-in cage, and make the rear subframe for the Escort Cossie diff

Not so much to update this time, as I've been pretty busy with other commitments.
The front section of the chassis is now tacked together and ready to have the subframe made up and have everything welded properly.

Since then, I picked up a pair of fibreglass doors and bonnet and trial fitted the doors (please excuse the stuff everywhere)

And finally I began attacking the underside of the roof, removing the sound deadening, grinding it down and rust proofing it

Not being funny but if you've never welded thicker metals, a spaceframe chassis might not be the best thing to start on. If you're contemplating a chassis, build a jig which is plumb and level in every plane and build your chassis off of that. A couple of RSJ's work great and will stop the chassis distorting under welding. You also want to triangulate / gusset wherever practical

    Anglia 105e project

Thanks again for the comments, taken into consideration PSweeney cheers. Made up a few gussets for the chassis, just got to cut a few more and weld them in

Also made the boot floor out of the 20mm sq tubing, it's sorted for now until I get more material to add the last bar in

Found some rust holes in the roof and A pillars, currently trying to think of the best way to replace it all - any advice that anyone has would be great for the pillars where the windscreen will eventually be

    Anglia 105e project

Plenty of rust holes to comment on this time around, the a pillar was in pretty bad shape so I patched it up (only took a photo of it tacked)

I've almost finished the o/s sill with the holes for the dzus fasteners to be drilled and a bit of filler to be added at a later date

The last update comes in the shape of the rear arches, the furthest inward lip was rotten so it has been removed - my worry is that this may make the rear arch look wrong, any opinions on this would be much appreciated. The outer body is just being bolted to the chassis so an inner lip is not required to tie into any inner bodywork

    Anglia 105e project

Finally had some time to do something this week, got the N/S sill on with filler to be sorted later on when all of the fillering is to be done at once

The cage was ordered yesterday, got the club one from custom cages with a bit of extra tube coming out from the a pillar to meet the main hoop, since this distance will be slightly larger than normal. This will be positioned while I cut and profile the rest of the tubing to meet the rear sub frame, front chassis rails and boot floor.

I also finally got round to cleaning the rusty stuff off of the floor today, so for now at least, the floor is visible

    Anglia 105e project

Spent today tacking in a few gussets for the main chassis/cage mounts and sub frame, after changing the gearbox tunnel rails once again to allow a bit more room for the pedal box and seats.

I also sourced a few bits that I'll eventually be using for the front suspension, heavy duty adjustable TCA's from dad's old escort, drop links and tension struts. Also got some capri struts tucked away to be either used, sold or converted into coilovers once I get near that stage

Should start looking more like a car over the next few months once the cage has arrived.

    Anglia 105e project

Since I'm still waiting on the roll cage to be delivered I thought I'd do something else to pass the time. With a bit of persuasion I managed to get the keys off of my dad for the Mk1 Capri to restore and use as a daily for a while, but it needs a fair old chunk of work doing to it since it's been under tarp for the best part of 4 years - therefore progress on the Anglia will be slowed down until the new year when funds and time should be freed up a bit.

I'll probably start a new thread for the Capri at some point this week but here's a few pictures of it for now

    Anglia 105e project

Due to trying to get my studies finished, work has been slow on the angle box but it's slowly getting somewhere. The chassis floor is fully welded up now, and the roll cage was delivered and eventually sorted after the incorrect (standard length) A Pillar tubes were sent, although the specified dimensions were sent the next day at no cost so big thanks to Custom Cages for that.

Today was spent tacking on a section from the main hoop to the rear of the sub frame as the main hoop wasn't as strong as I'd have liked, but this did the trick to stiffen it up significantly.

The next task of the day was to get the A Pillar tube cut to size and ready to tack up and got tacked eventually before we decided to check the fitment inside the body, which was no easy task that's for sure. (Ignore the organised chaos/crap everywhere)

The body was then dragged out of storage and positioned ready to be fitted, although it was bloody heavy compared to the chassis floor, so we had to rethink our strategy.

Eventually we managed to slide the chassis under the body and drop it down on top to check that everything would fit in, where it was all very snug and the tubing sat relatively tight up to the bodywork.

We then finally got it all back into the garage looking almost car-like, ready to tack the rest of the tubing in when I get a chance over the coming weeks.

    Thanks for looking

You know what pees me off about Anglias? The fact they have adjustable door hinges! and then Ford went and got rid of them for the Escort!!

Nice work with the box section though :-)

    Anglia 105e project

Thanks for the comments chaps they're much appreciated, good read that Wildo - if my end result is anywhere near as nice as that escort I'll be a very happy man haha.

The main cage is tacked in fully with some welding practice on scrap tubing and box section with pictures below, going to buy a flip front after payday so I can get the front sorted out and get her rolling.

Some bits arrived for both the front and rear suspension from McGill Motorsport and Rally Design

And finally, I'm in the process of repairing the passengers door at work as it was pretty knackered with bits falling off and rather large rivets having been used, so for now I've filled the holes with black glue and added a small piece of carbon offcut where a bit had broken off. Plans are to bond carbon channelling to where the outer and inner skins meet to give it some strength, and anchor nuts for the window to locate back into as opposed to using rivets.

    Anglia 105e project

Progress has been very slow again as I'm sure you can tell, but on the plus side my hoard of parts is getting bigger so maybe I'll get something done in the near future.

The front chassis rails were tacked on with plenty of material left on just in case it was/is required, I've used tubing as opposed to box section for the aesthetics if the bonnet is opened, with with the bent tubing added for the front MacPhersons to bolt onto (hopefully) in the next few weeks as I will be looking to get it rolling and steering as a priority.

The camber adjustable top mounts arrived, although I hope to modify these to allow for caster adjustment by milling out the three holes at work, hopefully ending up looking like the pre-made slots for camber adjustment.

A couple of wheels turned up for me from JBW, 7x13 OS4 Turbo to drool over at the moment and eventually fit. Plenty of dish on them, and I'd imagine they're going to be a bit of a marmite subject so I'll just leave that there.

Fibreglass flip front has also been picked up but I'll wait until I am at a stage where it's ready to be fitted until I show it (it's a bit tatty but nothing a bit of 9323 adhesive won't fix). As ever, thanks for reading/commenting and I'll try to pick up the pace a bit.

Could it be just another unfinished project ?
Prob weighed twice as much as an escort ?
