    I love this thread,
I used to work with my Dad, we bickered constantly and both thought we knew best.

Looking back.. Not once did either of us say ''see, I said that was right or I told you''. We never scored points off of each other, we both knew what we knew and knew what the other knew as well. I would give anything to do it again.
That car will be the best car in the world.

Enjoy every moment and don't finish it too quickly.

Cheers guys; my dad and I do clash from time to time , but we do get on much better with each other now that we're both a little older... I guess we're just a bit too similar

I keep telling him that we'll continue to get along fine, as long as he just keeps doing whatever I say... funnily enough that goes down about as well with him as it does when I tell my wife the same thing

Seriously though, I wouldn't change him for the world; I've been privileged enough to own and run some very nice cars over the years for not a lot of money in terms of running costs precisely because of his years of experience and knowledge. I certainly wouldn't have been able to do any of my big projects without him.

I'm now getting very eager to see whether the final paint has gone on this week yet!

A little bit more progress on the centre console - now have the controls in place for the hot/cold air mixer pipes, as well as the fan speed for the fresh air intake:

    P1050333-.JPG

    P1050334-.JPG

The upright section is basically finished now - the mixer valve on the left needs moving a few mm to the left to align it better, but nothing a round file won't be able to sort out.

I can't really do anything with the bottom section as I want to put the cut-out in for the gear lever surround before looking at covering it. Also need to afford all the switches too; I'm looking at using these: http://www.carbuildersolutions.com/u...tch-headlights

Here's something else I've been working on that's completely unrelated to the Escort:

Needs a bit more tidying up, some plastic covers for the screw heads and then a coat of Nintendo-purple paint, and et voila; a Super-Ultra-Gameboy-Advance

She allows me one room. Everything else has to go in either the garage or the shed. Fair deal, I suppose!

The amount of old and new Ford parts appearing everywhere has so far been accepted relatively benignly

Back to the Escort, I should be viewing it this weekend so may be able to grab some pictures - it's going in to the oven for a second lot of primer, so it should be nearing final paint very shortly.

Have you got the car back from the painters yet? Wouldn't mind seeing it before I go back to work...
Also and this maybe a long shot but have you any idea where I might be able to get some Siemens 55lb injectors from? I believe they are used on some Porsche turbos.... Namely 944's

Sadly not. It has taken a few weeks longer than anticipated (we're at 6 weeks I think now?). I'm assured by dad that when he went over to see it on monday it was nearing the end of primer and getting ready for final paint.

Sorry, we've not got much in the way of engine electronics - the only injectors I've got are ones on a Vauxhall redtop manifold (unlikely to flow very much) and one set of the same dark green Bosch 403's that I'm using as well.

Yeah I think Any of these will do the job Siemens 55s, 83s or Bosch 403s for the BHP I'm looking for but been told it's a better spray pattern on the 55s .... I've managed to source some from a Porsche 944 forum for £60 lol absolute bargain I just need to test them out now ....

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

Update: No final paint yet, but the prep is virtually complete.

Needs a final primer applied, but all of the stopper, levelling and tidying is done; they've even made the front panel joins look really good.

    P1050355-.jpg

    P1050357-.jpg

    P1050358-.jpg

The bodyshop have asked for the new door pins and new bonnet hinges to be taken over this week as they're going to fit the doors and bonnet in place to paint - it's a pearl paint so they can't really be done off the car otherwise they'll look different. Obviously the engine bay, door shuts etc will be done first.

They're hoping to get the paint on next week and I think that if they don't we might need talk about setting a finish date, as although they've made a really good job, it's taking much longer than originally estimated. I'm prepared to give a lot of leeway, but obviously the longer it takes, the less decent weather we've got left to put things back together; I really don't want to be doing fiddly body or electrical work when the dark nights and cold days starts to draw in again. We'll see how things go this next week; the quality of the work so far has been very good however, so I'm expecting a really good final finish.

A lot of fabricators and painters run over plan some actually do the work others just don't bother full stop your lucky you got a good bunch. It will be worth the wait by the sounds of it. i do stuff myself now as it is cheaper and you can control the quality and time scale way better than if you have others do it.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

Still waiting on the paint job. Been over the see the guys and they weren't happy with a few areas on the bonnet and roof, so redid them again with stopper - the car was waiting in line to get another coat of primer yesterday morning (29th August 2015).

Things are starting to get tight, as where I work you have to use all your holiday allowance before the end of september; I'd kept a week back to do the initial big jobs on the car when we got her back. However, they assured me that we'd have her back before the end of september. I'll be in **** with my holidays if I don't.....

Anyway, not much else to do, so moved on to a pair of sunvisors I was gratiously donated by one of my dads contacts. I initially thought they might be grey (well, a filthy grey).....

    P1050431-.JPG

As I won't have a grey interior I thought I'd try using plastic dye to change them to moonstone black, the same as the headliner I've bought.

So raid the cupboard for the wifes cleaning tools and decamp to the garage :-)

Start with swarfega to degrease and get the surface dirt off:

    P1050432-.JPG

    P1050434-.JPG

And it seems they're putty underneath all that filth!

One done, one (the worst) to do:

    P1050435-.JPG

    P1050436-.JPG

Look at all that muck! These must have been stored in a garage or shed for decades

With the surface dirt off, they're not in bad condition at all:

    P1050437-.JPG

... but could do with something a bit more aggressive to get all the dirt out from the indentation of the vinyl (did Ford never think that this material would be a pig to clean?):

    P1050439-.JPG

They're yellowed underneath all that dirt, but to be expected of a cream colour some 40+ years old!

    P1050440-.JPG

    P1050441-.JPG

Now that they're cleaned up, I'm off to buy some plastic dye / vinyl spraypaint to turn them black!

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

    Still waiting on the bodyshop.

In the meantime I ordered some leather/vinyl dye and had a go at colouring the putty sunvisors to match the black headliner and carpet that will be getting fitted .... at some point in the future

So, take one set of recently cleaned putty sunvisors:

    P1050460-.JPG

And a can of TRG Leather/vinyl spray dye:

    P1050461-.JPG

    And apply one coat:

    P1050462-.JPG

Erm... doesn't look very good. So try a second coat:

    P1050463-.JPG

Still a bit patchy, so try a third coat:

    P1050467-.JPG

    Much better.

If anyone else fancies attempting this then you will definitely need the 400ml cans of this dye, not the 150ml. I've used at least 3/4 of the bigger can in doing those two sunvisors and the brackets as well:

    P1050465-.JPG

The end result (they're virtually dry already - enough to handle) is a little shinier than I wanted, but overall for the cost of a free pair of ratty old sunvisors and the £9 for the tin of spray dye, I don't think they've come out too bad.

All this time they have had it and only find issues now, typical body shop in my experience ,I think they just take to much work on.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

The bodyshop managed to sort out some of the problems they've been having, as woodywoodpecker guessed, I think they've just taken on too much work and, like anyone else they've been prioritising their day to day work from big clients, so some of the trickier, longer jobs (my car and another Escort mk1) have seem to have taken a lot longer.

We've been on holiday for the past week and a bit, and only got back in to the country yesterday and dropped in to the bodyshop this morning. Looks like they managed to clear out their backlog of repair jobs as my car was sitting in the spray booth....

The colour is absolutely stunning, in the flesh; it's a very deep red and the pearl is almost gold. Even on just the interior, door surrounds and engine bay it's looking far, far better than I expected it would; it also hasn't been polished back yet.

The doors, bonnet and boot have also been painted around the sides/reverse, ready to refit and paint at the same time as the exterior bodywork. Just a pity that by the time it's finished and we get it back that we won't have much decent weather to work on it this year, it will start getting colder soon and working on it will be no fun when your hands are freezing!

Still, seeing some paint on it has rekindled my enthusiasm a lot, and even the owner of the bodyshop who is working on it commented that he's pleased that all his other work is out of the way and he can concentrate on getting it done.

Started cleaning up the drop glass holders today; they've got a bit of corrosion as you'd expect, but they're complete and need painting.

Cleaned up with a wire brush:

Treated with kurust and a coating of red oxide primer:

I'll get some proper paint on them tomorrow, but that's another little job done.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

Just placed an order for a full set of new glass - laminated windscreen, new front quarters and drop glass, new rear quarters and a new heated rear screen. I went for the light green 'Sundym' modern style tint, rather than clear. Already got a full set of seals and rubbers to fit it with, that I bought a while ago.

I didn't want to be putting the old glass back in, not having spent so much time and effort on everything else, also don't want the car standing in the garage with no glass in. So once it gets back, there's be some initial work to put wiring in, then fit the headlining and glass, so that it's water/damp/dust tight.

Cleaned up and painted the window linkages:

Also just finished the final coat of paint on the drop glass brackets themselves:

Yep, repair and re-use where possible, but definitely new stuff where it counts :-)

    More minor jobs!

Strip, clean and etch prime the front drop glass window channels:

Also cleaned up the rear mirror bracket and gave it a new coat of satin black:

Hoping to head to over to the bodyshop this weekend.... it's got to be finished by now...

Cleaned up the mirror (dyed it with the same spray as the sunvisors), mirror base and re-assembled onto the repainted arm:
