As you can tell, the car still isn't painted.

I was promised it was going in to the spray booth this last saturday afternoon, but I've not seen anymore of it this week. Starting to lose hope that it's ever going to b done, to be honest. It will be 3 weeks now since they painted the interior and door shuts.

If I lived any closer I'd be down every other day to keep on top of things, but as it is, I live and work about 25 miles away and getting there during the week is just not possible after finishing work, so it's only a saturday that I get the chance. Hopefully get my dad on the case with them this week though....

I don't know how to say this, but..... it has been painted

I've not seen it yet, but my dad has, and he's quite impressed with it (and he wasn't a fan of my colour choice, or metallic/pearl effect paint in general, especially so on a mk1).

I now have to wait until Saturday to actually see it myself.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

    Here we go!

The car is still being polished, so it's a bit of a mess in terms of polishing compound, water streaks, etc... there's only really the bonnet and front wings done so far, but even so, I'm really impressed with the way things are shaping up.

The satin black on the dashboard, windscreen pillars and behind the grill are still to be done, so there's a little more work to be done, but since it's just a flat colour it shouldn't take the guys much longer.

To give you an idea of how the paint looks in various light, here's the same picture; the first taken with flash on, which sort of bleaches everything out but actually gives a very close idea of what the actual colour looks like - a very deep red, but you lose the pearl effect in the image (it just looks metallic). The second is in normal daylight, which gives everything a gold hue due to the pearl paint in natural daylight. Put the two effects together and that's what it looks like

I did have to apologise to the bodyshop guys this morning though... I forgot to take a part to get painted at the same time as the car... the petrol cap!

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

    Cheers guys.

Really looking forward to seeing it all polished back and starting to build it back up; getting the proper wheels on it should make a big difference. I'm already thinking that the rear end isn't low enough though, looking at this image:

    P1050844-.JPG

There's -2" decambered springs and 1" blocks in at the moment - I think I'll have to switch back to the 2" blocks to get the ride height I want.

Next dilemma is working out what colour RS stripes from DMB to get though - dark metallic grey, silver or matt black; decisions, decisions!

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

Bought a new locking petrol cap and took it over to the bodyshop to get painted. Decided against getting the old one painted as it wasn't in the best of shape. Only £20 for a new cap and two sets of keys, so a bit of a bargain compared to the cost of most mk1 bits really!

Still waiting on the satin black bits being done (behind grill, dash, drop glass channels) - they wanted all the red paint polishing back first.

What a well written and presented thread. It's nice to see all your hard work coming along to fruition. I like to to see Lad and Dad working as a Team, it reminds me of my late Father working on my Rally Cars for the best part of 35 years.

I'll look forward to more updates, especially when the Engine and Box are fitted. Congratulations to all.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

Cheers, the comments are really appreciated. I thought my choice of a non-traditional colour may upset a few folks; I've had a few comments from visitors to the bodyshop relayed by way of the owner of the place; a lot of negative comments about how they were never made in that colour or similar, and I'm sure there'll be more still to come!

At the end of the day it's not an original car - even well before we got it it had been repaired (pretty well), changed to round headlights and other bits and bobs, and I'm definitely not putting the chrome trim along the sides again!

We'll see what people have to say when it's done. Hopefully some of them who made comments might change their mind? Wouldn't really bother me either way though; I'll have the car at the end of this, and they won't!

Anyway, car is still at the bodyshop but all of the polishing is done (not seen it yet!). It's getting the final pieces of black (behind grill, windscreen pillars, dashboard, front drop glass channels) painted early next week, hopefully to pick the car up next weekend.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

    Cheers guys!

With any luck we'll have it back within a few days and hopefully be at least able to get the proper front hubs+brakes on, the new wheels and get the new glass put in before the cold weather sets in. Engine, box and electrical stuff is probably not going to happen this side of christmas, unfortunately.
The next big thing once the glass is in is to get a quote from the guy who retrimmed Evoguys mk1 RS2000 to do my S2 RST Recaros, my rear seat (both of them in matching in black leather, with red stitching, naturally!) and fit new carpets. Just had a thought, how about leather covered interior door handles to match? Oooh, that might be spiffy

The car has finally been finished by the bodyshop - inside and out, and now the grill and headlight area has been blacked out and the dash and a-pillars done in satin black as well.

    Pictures below from today:

    P1050881-.JPG

    P1050882-.JPG

    P1050883-.JPG

It's making its way back to our place tomorrow morning, and we can finally start the job of bolting everything back on.

First job will be to run the wiring for the courtesy light up the a-post, then start the job of installing the headliner. Once the headliner is in we'll be installing the new glass set as I don't want the car left open in the workshop to gather dust.

Anyone know if the mk1 ever had automatic courtesy lights, or were they always just a manual switch on the light itself?

Well we didn't get the car back today as it was absolutely bucketing down all day! Should be coming monday instead.

In the meantime I've ordered a set of the headliner clips, headliner rods and rod grommets as well as door check gaskets and clevis pins from Escortrs.co.uk.

Also managed to snag a set of new door striker plates from Ebay :-)

The car is back, but my camera battery was flat yesterday! Argh!

Will try and get some more images at the weekend - I'm quite pleased with the way it has turned out; there are some minor bits to clean up (overspray on anti roll bar, for example), but on the whole it's come out quite well.

Ordered a roll of Dynamat for the roof and floor yesterday, as well as all the switches and warning lights for the centre console and dash pod - we've decided that after we install the headlining and glass, we'll move on to the electrics.

Hi Filippo - I'll get you the details of the wheels; I've still got them stacked up in the garage. I believe (but don't take this as a guarantee) that they're 6x13 Capri Laser wheels.

Re: Escort mk1 - xflow to XE to Cossie!

So today we started on the first of the jobs putting the car back together.

First thing was a layer of sound deadening on the roof, before we started anything else:

We redid the wiring for the interior courtesy light - running new wiring to the light as well as wiring down the left and right windscreen pillars to what will be the door switches (which mine never had when I bought it). I'll need to source some original items somehow....

Then we got all the bits together for the headliner. First you need a set of these:

    P1050892-.JPG

    They fit here:

    P1050894-.JPG

    P1050895-.JPG

You then need to try the headliner rods to make sure they fit and you've got them matched up to the right holes - there are two long and two short rods:

    P1050900-.JPG

The rods slide through the back of the headlining - start with the back or the front, threading each rod through in turn. The headliner will droop down, as you put the rods in you need to rotate them round so that they flex up and against the roof to maintain tension:

You can start the fitting at the front or the back, we picked the front. You need to pull the headliner tight and then mark and trim the excess material. We left just enough material in order to fold it back over the screen surround:

The last bit we did today is to glue the front edge to the screen surround and then clip it in place so that it is under tension. The left-to-right tension comes later when you fit it to he door frame and tops of the windscreen pillars. That looks as if it might be a bit more difficult!

Also took some newer photos of the car - as I've not really got any of the front so far. Here they are

Got some more of the headliner fitted today - the front looked pretty good from the work we did last weekend, so we moved on to the top of the windscreen pillars first:

    P1050915-.JPG

... these are absolute pigs to fit. The problem is the headlining as supplied is flat, so there's no curve or radiused seams as such, so whatever you try and do, it ends up creasing or bulging somewhere. We eventually came to the conclusion that we'd use the seam line shown in the above images to carefully fold back a section of the headliner so as to make it tighter and a better fit - without doing that, I can't see how you'd get anywhere near a decent fit above the sunvisor/windscreen pillar position.

Anyway, we left that just clipped in place and moved on the sides, first cutting the headliner back a little to make it easier to work with, then cutting 'V' wedges in to the material so that it was easier to work around the radius of the door frame and then tuck under the frame around the rear 1/4 windows.

The more you 'chase' the bulges and creases around, the better the fit, as you can see it getting tighter and less creased in each of the images above. We've now got the entire drivers side headliner clipped and glued in place, so it should be ready to remove the clips tomorrow and start on the other side - hopefully also getting the opportunity to then get the back window edge in place.

With the headliner in place under the frame around the drivers rear quarter, we took the opportunity to fit one of the new pieces of glass we got from Ricky Evans motorsport; a fully set of green tinted glass, complete with a set of new seals.

Here's the first bit of glass to go back in the car!

If we can get the passenger side headliner glued in place tomorrow, we should be able to at least get the other rear quarter window and the front screen fitted before monday.

    Starting to come together now!

what sound deadening did you go for seems to be such a choice to choose from!
