Escort mk2 With S2000 Engine, Exhaust manifold Q

Hello all. I have a mk2 with S2000 Engine on throttle bodies. There is a very flat note from the engine. We modded the exhaust manifold to fit by lengthening the no1 pipe and shortening the no4 pipe. The engine has been fitted in the traditional way, so that a type 9 box lines up in the right position. I would love to hear the way others did it and their result as far as figures are concerned.

I cant help you on the s2000 install but as far as exhausts go different lenghth primaries is a major no no, you will have different gas flow from each cylinder leaving a very unbalanced engine with different stresses on each cylinder.

Its not a MAJOR no-no, its undesirable but sometimes can't be avoided - it'll hurt power a bit but not self destruction levels of stress! All depends if its plumbed 4-1 or 4-2-1? It'll just work a bit unbalanced and not as efficiently as if equal.

Thanks for the feedback lads, as far as how big a no no it is, she did blow up, in tremendous fashion. (Last year.)
No 1 conrod broke half way down. She did see slightly higher revs than usual on a down change earlier in the rally, but only a little over 9000 rpm.
This surprised me as they red line at that on a standard engine. A slight mis came into her shortly before she blew.
I ran on pump fuel with pro boost to bring up the octane. There were no signs of detonation or anything melting when stripped.
Its a case of which came first the chicken or the egg. But id love to know the definite cause. Now that she is back going what is the best way of getting the exhaust manifold right, ideally I think a standard manifold would suit best but there is no way we can make it fit. Thanks for any help lads.

I suppose for road use its fine, but if its for competition use then it is a no no otherwise your throwing your money away on throttle bodies and other mods to improve performance while being hindered by your exhaust manifold

I measured my S2000 manifold the other week, Honda have made all the primarys different lengths, the two center pipes are nearly the same length. Without cutting the manifold it is hard to measure accurately, but one and four a very different. I am sure Honda have done this for a reason, I was once told that equal lengths aren't always the best thing.

I suppose a lot of factors will influence the answer, ie honda still had to produce a reliable road engine not an all out competition engine and various engines react differently to different manifolds, 4-1 may work better than 4-2-1 of a given engine, both manifolds can leave the same engine with different dyno figures but more torque may suit the application better than bhp

Have a word with des in dmrr racing in northern ireland he ran highly modified s2000 competition engines in mk2's for years and I saw the manifold in his last escort and it was a piece of art to say the least!!!

Outlaw do you have a pic of the engine/manifold in the car? Interested to see how it fit in the engine bay.

    Cheers

I will get pics for ye but it wont be for a couple of days. A friend of mine has the same set up as me in a 205 rwd. The manifold he made up has the primarys much closer in terms of length. His engine was a lovely screamer with that manifold but he had less torque than me, but we have to remember he had his on a different rolling road and has mbe management where as I have RTD. The good news is his manifold should fit a mk2 so, I am going to substitute it and see how she is.
