    Help????asap

Finally got the igntiion module wired up and the car tuning over. But As the car begins to pic up the engine just locks off and u get a humming sound. Could it be the starter or solenoid? cause i'm using a 1300 ohv starter with the old solenoid.

How many teeth does a (std) 2L pinto timing belt have?

I believe that the teeth on the flywheel may have the angled edge on the wrong side for your starter motor, most of the pinto engines would have had a pre-engaged starter motor, the cog on these sits the gearbox side of the flywheel and pulls forwards onto the teeth to start the car.
The older ones from the escorts with the separate solenoid have the cog sitting the engine side of the flywheel and it moves backwards onto the teeth to start the car.
this may be causing it to jam up as it tries to "let go" ofr the flywheel as the engine fires possibly??

Sounds like the starter is disengaging.
This is usually due to too much timing advance.
back the dizzy off a few degrees.

well retarding the timing didn't work so i guess its the starter motor.

Seems like as the engine starts to rotate on its own power, the starter makes its way in the oppossite direction to to its off position which locks the engine since they are both going in opposite directions.(i.e. engine and starter)

So can a cortina automatic starter work?

mk 3/4/5 cortina auto starter is the same as a manual one, its just upside down on the otherside of the engine, so yeah, it should fit no probs, might be a fiddle to get in though cos they are quite long.

well got the car to start yesterday, BUT the starter is swinging very slowly and it takes very long to get the engine started.

Is it the starter motor(1300 XFlow) that cannt take the load that makes it turn over to slow? Or is there sumthing else it could be?

starter could be shagged out, or its not getting enough power, also make sure your engine earth is good, thats what the starter uses for its earth and it dont help if its using your throttle cable! lol

    Pinto Starters.

Starter on the left is a Cortina Mk3 [TC] starter. U can see it is longer and therfore a higher wattage [torque]unit than STD pinto Escort starter, on right. U will need to take
engine mount, from engine to crossmember off to fit this afetr jacking up engine. The MK3 auto starter is all wrong and not easy to fit on a manual pinto. Would work on an auto though.

From memory the reduction geared starters are 1300watts.
