I have no idea whats happened around the handbrake?

looking to put a fast engine in it, with small bubble arches some nice recaros. I will be asking lots of questions along the way,I apologise in advance for all the newbie questions, any comments are welcome.

    Re: BMW S2002 called Maurice

    Hi,

Made a little progress but the weathers been terrible.

Picked up a engine stripped it down to a manageable size.

    Lots of loom :/

I am looking to convert the steering to rack and pinion as the engine wont fit :/.
I've got some newbie questions that some of you might be able to answer.
Can anybody who has done this before please give some guidance.

Firstly a steering rack need to be picked which has the same distance between UV joints as the steering box system. Does anyone know which one is close?
The steering rack needs to be mounted at the right height compared to the TCA's reduce the affect of bump steer.
The steering rack needs to be mounted the right distance back and the steering arms need to be shorter to counteract the short throw the rack has compared to the steering box.

    Am I missing anything?

    Re: BMW S2002 called Maurice

I've measured the S2000 engine mounting points and attached them below if anyone needs them. I'm not absolutely sure they fit as havn't got them back from the cutters yet so take no responsibility if they dont fit. Just thought they might be useful to someone else.

I've also measured the distance between the universal joints on the steering box and got 410mm
I measured the distance between the pivots of the tca's and got 470mm.

Correct me if i'm wrong but i thought they were suppose to be very similar otherwise it will cause bump steer?
Does anyone know a steering rack that is 410mm between universal joints?

    Thanks,
    Aaron

    Re: BMW S2002 called Maurice

to avoid bump steer the knuckles in the rack really need to be inline with the inner TCA pivots, which means using a short rack. back in the day it was fairly common to convert these to rack and pinion using a bmw E21 rack, you will need to add brackets to the existing x member to take the rack, the one and only car i converted to rack and pinion i used a mini rack which was the right length to suit the tca,s i used ford track rods, i think they were escort or capri (cant remember) these fitted both the mini rack and the bmw steering arms, the only downside was that because the bmw steering arms are quite long it made the steering quite slow

Cheers for the info I was just surprised that the bmw steering box knuckles and the tca pivots were different lengths.
    The steering box was 410mm
    and the tcas were 470mm.

Looks like i need to find a new rack :P

.yes they are are different lengths, but they are also at different heights so shouldnt be the same length, your drawing an imaginary line up through them to the top mount, so the higher one should be shorter

    Re: BMW S2002 called Maurice

So far made some adjustable tcas

I've been looking for a new rack to use but i am still confused as almost everywhere i look they say to get a rack with the knuckles the same distance apart as the tcas for the bmw 2002 this would be 470mm.

I have found a rack which is 400mm (Siecento steering rack) apart knuckle to knuckle which is almost the same as the steering box and could be made 10mm longer with some spacers. So if i mount this rack at the same height as the original steering box this should work?

    Hi Graham,

I think i'm still confused with the steering rack length as the original steering box is 60mm shorter than the tca pivot points but is only mounted about 25mm higher. Also i would have thought if you draw a imaginary line from the tca pivot to the strut top mount the higher the rack is mounted the wider the rack would need to be? Sorry for the novice questions

    thanks for the comments,
    Aaron

    Re: BMW S2002 called Maurice

made some progress mocking up the engine in the car. I've only had to trim the gearbox tunnel a little so i'm quite happy with the fit.

Steering rack wise i'm using the peugeot rack which i have trimmed and tapped so the length can be varied to fit.

    using discs from a mini

what do you think of my welding (engine mounts)?
    Made some progress this weekend
Got the engine mounts welded up

Gearbox tunnel needs a bit of work

    shortened rack

Started work on the exhaust manifold.

and started work on the gearbox tunnel

    Finished off the gearbox tunnel

The s2000 dash in the cluster

Gaz Coilovers with huge AP Calipers, Gunna have to get some custom bells though. I was gunna try and get away with BMW Mini discs but they dont have enough depth

Will Hopefully be sorting out the plumbing and wiring this weekend. Then I'll be trying to fit the s2000 fuel pump into the BMW 2002 tank.
    Thanks for looking.

    Thanks for the comments,

Yeah the plates fitted fine. the block has a extra bit of casting which sits right inbetween the mounting holes so once this is ground down the mounts fit perfectly. I have no idea what to do with the wiring as I have the s2000 loom so was going to try and use it. but it has so many plugs and boxes that i have no idea where to start :/ anyone had any experience in taking a s2000 loom to the bare bone?

I have been making progress but very slowly as it is electronics and I'm not keen on it.

A big moment tho as i got the engine running with the factory ecu.
I have also ordered a hot rod loom, i will use the honda ecu to run the engine and then use the hot rod loom to run the rest of the car.

The wiring ended up like this.

everything outside the door is not needed.
These are the bits you need

I've also mounted the s2000 throttle pedal

    Fitted the new calipers

has anyone had any experience with gaz adjustable top mounts, I've made adjustable tca's so i'm not sure if it is worth the the extra money

    cheers,
    Aaron

I bought a set for my Escorta d they didn't fit, apparently they made a batch upside down, ended up buying a set of Compbrake ones that were spot on and cheaper.

    Excellent stuff

Any chance of a little more on how you got the engine running with the S2000 loom? What did you start with? What tripped you up? What you learnt? That sorta thing.

Out for a drive on a sunny spring day reminds me why I got this car

Some real good stuff going on here keep it going. With the top mounts i used them to good effect in conjuntion with adjustable TCA's to narrow the track on my anglia whilst using escort suspension. You can also get some castor adjusted in if you need.

Looking at what you have done so far surprised you haven't made them

    Thanks, for the comments
started making a jig to modify the e30 rear axle today. Hopefully i'll finish it during the week

The blocks have two holes so hopefully i can just cut the mounts of and move the pin to the new position
    Cheers Aaron

I'll do a little write up when my new loom arrives, as at the moment nothing is fused.
