That does sound weird mate does it run ok on tickover but stall when you try to rev it?If thats the case then it might be a fuel problem probably caused by the carb

u got a good earth to the engine this would cause it to turn over slow
also the 2.0l starter is a pre engaged type and because you are using the 1.6l flywheel u should use the inertia type starter as the teeth on the flywheel aint the same if i remember tight
and junk the carb for a proper weber one

the flywheel is a pinto 1.6l do u still have to use the inertia type.

Sounds like the ignition timing is too far advanced. Try backing it off a little.

Also Try Giving The Coil A Good Feed,My Capri Suffered The Same Problem Before I Rolled It,I Had To Run A Wire From The + On The Battery To The + On The Coil.

could it be that the battery is not producing enough cranking amps. How much cranking amps does a pinto need?
Are you guys using the standard starter without much
problems?
when starting the positive feed wire gets very hot and the starter motor starts to smoke and get hot...
