Has anyone here replaced their standard exhaust on their escort with a 2" single box system? If so whats it like? (e.g. noise and power etc)
Thanks

Yup, i changed the whole system, manifold 'n' all to an ashley system. It's the 2" system with a 3" tail pipe. Sounds immense, barks and pops!! i kept the original system though just in case. It is noisy but not extreme! and it gives better low-end power but i've noticed top end power is a bit different! I'd reccomend it, especially changind down into 2nd gear while going 40mph...
Cheers Stevo. What engine is that with? Because I only have a 1.3 (insurance reasons only...they don't look too kindly upon young drivers and anything more!) The system I would get is a new manifold and a 2" single box system. Wasnt going to put a larger tailpipe on, just keep it as 2".
Oh yeh, and where did you get it from?
Thanks
Matt
Mine is an RS2000, i'm only 24 but get decent insurance though dominion plan with the RSOC. I got mine through burton power. i tried shopping round but they ended up being pretty much the same price everwhere. They also said it'd take 7-10 days to come but it was at my door within 2 days. take a look, www.burtonpower.co.uk.
Well, being only 17 and insurance is expensive wherever I go. I've looked on their site and they seem fairly reasonable. Peter Lloyd Rallying isn't bad either. And as for 2nd gear doing 40mph...I can keep dreeming, 30mph is the max in 2nd maybe 35 if i push it!!
Thanks
Matt
I got mine here:-
http://www.proven-products.co.uk/
It's not an ashley but very similar in design & was under £130 for the manifold & twinbox system. Delivered the following day too Send them an e-mail asking what you're after & they'll give you a price.
Needed a bit of a fiddle to get it to fit spot-on but aren't most aftermarket exhausts like that????
£130 thats not bad, i'm not fussed bout the manufacturer of it, I mean, its gonna sit under the car, so hardly bothered what name it has on it. what car is you exhaust on? engine size?
cheers
Matt
Mk1. Tuned 1300 [ ]...!!!!!! At the moment 1600's in the shed....... still
Sound is just right IMO.
As I said send an e-mail enquiring & see what they'll do for you. They do different heights for the 1600 too, so make sure you get the right one!!!!
Let me know if you use them.
I got a 2" twin box Ashley system for £75 and 4 branch manifold £25 From Ian Harwood. The manifold was second hand but not so you could tell. Not got them on yet so don't know how they sound.
As said above the 1600 and 1300 manifolds are different heights.

ps Spoke to Ian today, he said Classic Ford were there yesterday so I guess he'll be in next months issue.
I have a 4 branch off a 1600 ghia for £10.00 plus postage and i got my 2 inch one back box system from peter lloyd he sold it me as a ashley system but last week i fond out they have not sold him one in 2 years and the one i got was not one from them but it was £70.00 all in.
I Have got the 2 inch Ashley twin box system with 4 branch manifold on a 1600 crossflow. It was there when I got the car so dont know the difference in performance but it sounds good and not too loud. I think you can expect to pay around £145.00 for a new Ashley complete with manifold. Try Midland Performance Centre. www.m-p-c.demon.co.uk
Nice, well I'll look into it, and let you all know what I decide. Thanks for all your help.
Matt
Make sure that the manifold will clear the engine mounts, i have a 1300 too and got a 1600 manifold but it wont ever fit over the engine mount as the 1600 is a good few inches taller
Mine was OK here. Close, but OK. It's also very tight against the starter motor 'bulge' on the bellhousing.
On the exhaust there is one hook under the back seat area, whereas there are the 2 on the car yeah?? ...Well here I had to heat & bend 1 car bracket 90* to line up with the exhaust 1 & use 1 of the chunky 'square' rubber mounts.
So its quite a big job then? with reguards to daves issue with the manifold, surely if i made sure that I got the 1.3 manifold I wouldnt have the same problem?
Matt
Are you saying that Peter Lloyd Rallying were selling something they were claiming was Ashley when it wasn't ?I have a 4 branch off a 1600 ghia for £10.00 plus postage and i got my 2 inch one back box system from peter lloyd he sold it me as a ashley system but last week i fond out they have not sold him one in 2 years and the one i got was not one from them but it was £70.00 all in.
Yes i am and when i rang ashley they are not happy about it.
I rang Ashley to ask about the noise from thier systems and when they asked me the place i got it from they have not sold any too them for a long time.
He told me what to look for on the System like seam weld on back box etc and mine is not the same so another rip of from Peter Lloyd i was going to bell them but after the shit i got from them the last time i know not to shop at that place in future.
West wales rally spares are much better.
That's what I was going to say - second time the tw@ts at Peter Lloyd Rallying have *apparently* misrepresented something. I notice their advert in Classic Ford has changed re: the Minilite/Superlite fiasco.
Personally, I didn't like their attitude on the phone when I dealt with them so I won't use them again, but I can't say I've had any problems with the single box 2" exhaust, or the anti-tramp bars that came from there.
Yea your right...but if you want to stick a 1600 in in the near future it might not work cos it may hit on the front footwell/bulkhead area due to the 1600 being a few inches taller just a thought mate not trying to put you offSo its quite a big job then? with reguards to daves issue with the manifold, surely if i made sure that I got the 1.3 manifold I wouldnt have the same problem?
Matt
Definately Dave. There is no way my manifold will fit a 1600 cus of what you've just said. & I've got a 1600 in the shed & was in two minds myself over which one to get with regards to the future
In the end I got the 1300 one as the 1600 wasn't [& still ain't] ready to go in & I needed a new manifold as I'd welded the other one several times & kept cracking along the fresh weld after a few months!!!!
Looking at the price of them & the fact I need the Mk1 for work traveling I done what I thought best!!!!
Cool glad its all sorted
If I was to make sure that I got the 1300 manifold I would have no problems though would i? And if I later upgraded to the 1600 I could just get a 1.6 manifold?
Matt
99.9%If I was to make sure that I got the 1300 manifold I would have no problems though would i? And if I later upgraded to the 1600 I could just get a 1.6 manifold?
Matt
Cheers fella
Here comes the moan!
I went through the whole, which exhaust fits what, with SpeedShack. They didn't have a clue what fitted what. At one point I had three different exhausts trying to work out which one fitted. Once I got the right one, 4-2-1 twin box, I wrapped it in exhaust wrap. It looked great and did the job, but then it snapped clean off at the weld where the four pipes go into two. Ashley said it was due to the increased heat build up in the exhaust causing it to crack. Bo#@ocks! I took it to a specialist stainless steel exhaust builder and they said they would have got the sack if they produced anything as shoddy as that. Hmmmm Ashley Exhausts!!!!! not impressed. I've ended up with another one now. I had to get the axle bend cut off and put on straight and get all the mounts repositioned! I now I need ear plugs for long journeys! Be warned.
I had my standard Ford-spec 4-branch wrapped a few years ago & it snapped as no4 joined. At the time was told it could be the wrap on a mild system (moistoire??) & there was something on here recently (last few weeks) regarding the same. Hence my new one is not wrapped.....
have to see how it goes
Nothing like a nice boost of confidence!
I have and still have a full 1600 system and manifoold for the x-flow and it sounded the muts nuts although i was using twin 40's which alters the sound a bit more!!
I have a 4-2-1 on my pinto now with a twin choke and the sound is a bit too farty/raspy for me and that is a 1 box system, looks like new carbs are needed!!
Dan, do you have a blue Mk2?
Matt
No Mate i have a grey 4 door Mk2, have a look in the my retor section I put pictures of both of mine in there!
I personaly prefer the twin box system, the single box system is just to noisey.
Andy
ive got a modded 1300 xflow wit an ashley manifold with system with a 2.5 tail pipe, sounds nice better than the modderen srap around here
HeHeive got a modded 1300 xflow wit an ashley manifold with system with a 2.5 tail pipe, sounds nice better than the modderen srap around here
Very similar here
Obviously try to be quiet out of the road [plus the buggers cold anyhow & don't really want to be toeing it] but I bet it sounds even nicer once that temp guage has gone up & I'm racing a few people into work at 5:30 in the morning.
I've finally ordered the exhaust! Ordered it on Monday from Peter Lloyd Rallying. Decided on the 1300 manifold (obviously!) and the single box 2" system. Cant wait for it to be delivered later today and fit it! Thanks for everyones help on deciding what to get.
Matt
OK, exhaust has been delivered and I'm ready to fit it. But as with all things that I seem to do on this car...it got complicated. The rear box section of the system has different type of hangers on it to that which will fit on my car. The rear box has "RS2000" written on it. Do you think they have sent me the wrong box for my non-RS standard Escort? Or is this a common problem that others have got over? If so...How??? The RS exhaust hangers at the box are double doughnut, and the one on my standard exhaust is a single type, which locates on an extended bolt for the anti-roll bar support. Meaning the body end support won't work with the exhaust support bracket.
Right, thats that essay over with, any help would be appreciated greatly asap!
Thanks,
Matt
Matt
I think you'll find the exh mounts are diff on RS models thats why you are having problems I think. Someone else can confirm this, give them a ring back and explain.
Nat
Have exactly the same thing on mine. My plan is to adapt the brackets so they do match. Involves a small bit of welding but will solve it.
Did you contact the people that you bought your exhaust from to see if it was a problem or the wrong part? I'm probably going to contact Peter Lloyd and see if its the wrong part. I thought about adapting the brackets as well, but would prefere one thats a straight match.
Matt
I had the same problem with my ashley, they only make em for the type 49 shell exhaust brackets, i just moved the brackets on the car.
Moved the brackets? Sorry Popup, I don't understand, where did you move them to? And how? I'm assuming the Type 49 shell is the RS one and that you have the a non-RS, like me.I had the same problem with my ashley, they only make em for the type 49 shell exhaust brackets, i just moved the brackets on the car.
