    Project Mexico

Borrowed the works camera. I must get one for myself. Anyway here are some pics of the 78' Mexico. No sunroof no rotten chassis sections to change only usual footwell bottom of A post repairs to do. Working on the front end first now that I have the wings/f-panel/rails/kickpanels . This could turn out to be Clint's RS Mexico twin brother . Arches or x pack uummmmmmm

    Re: Project Mexico

Will get some more pics up , it's not bad for a 150 pound Rs Mexico shell is it.
I've seen what people do in garages half the size so I better appreciate it and get in there and do some work on it.
I got the pattern panels form Yukspeed.com. Will see how the fit is when the time comes. As for Arches or Xpack, I was biased towards the montes but I am begining to head towards the X side.
Main plan is to sort out front end make any other repairs. 5 or 6 Link, gp4 turrets, bigger tunnels. Start fitting her up with mechanicals to sort it all out before any final painting.
My brother found some guy who does mobile grit blasting so will be looking in to it.

MK1ESC got it as a shell, but i have two boxes full of wheels from over the years i will be sorting them out soon.
As for getting a another nnaaahh. it has had a qtr panel replacement and we fixed the o/s rear corner as well so its gonna get modded up. Not into all this concourse (spell?) stuff. I like to tinker and drive em. like most on here. Anyway not seen many X pack Mexicos lately. Thanks for the pics guys.

    Re: Project Mexico

    Just a little update.
We finally took the front and rear screens out (one piece rubbers), used good old WD40 and then passed a ty wrap thru and break the seal all the way round and then it was just a matter of popping one edge out and the rest followed.
Well the dreaded tin rot had to be there just above the heater bubble and in the corner on the rear.
Got myself a hyd pedal box too, now need to seell stuff to make money towards the project.

    A little update.
Getting to the point where I will need to remove the front spit so I can set up the front end ready for welding and temporary fit doors back on to line it all up as well. Found some rot under the heater vent at the top, gonna remove the heater bubble as well next. was in the garage tonite but got a call out by work so I had to go in (get paid 3 hours OT mininum on top of on call fee woz in for 35mins) coz they could not get machines running .

Fibersports in Basildon, Essex did the original Ford X-pack arches which by Fords/Fibersports own admission where based on the Zakspeed arches. I think Fibersports has the moulds to do the Zakspeed ones, Most of the thundersaloons Escorts used the Zakspeed ones, all be it widened, and they all looked the Dogs Danglies

An update coz I know you lot like to see these type of pics.
We started to cut away some rust but as you dig deeper you cut more off to make sure you get rid of it. The 'A' pillar outer skin was iffy in places so off it came. It's very thin to start with, so another job to do now. The side kick panels have been fitted up for size and are ready. Just a matter of making the extra pieces where it meets the floor/sill which will also support the roll cage as well.
It had to be done, you don't want do any of it again in six months time do you!

    Re: Project Mexico

Little update, still doing prep work like removing old wing rails and rot, making up new pieces like the A pillar part. I'm also thinking of making more clearance in the footwell corner before welding in the side panel for big rim clearance, but the roll cage feet won't allow much as is I suppose its a case of shortening the cage feet to the new position etc.
Had to modify the front spit mounts to allow for the front panel to go on without dropping the car off the spit (spit from www.escortrs.co.uk) now I can fit up wings/front panel bonnet before welding etc.
Still in 2 minds about x packing it as is. Seeing DW's XXX and the moving of bulkhead back I'm thinking why not (but not as far as his) I have a pair of chassis eng mounts already! just wondering if by keeping most of the original bulkhead panel with pedal box mount etc it could be done obviously adding metal where required, I have an auto tunnel ready and a bulkhead strengthening plate to go in anyway and the heater bubble is off so if cutting out the rot it makes sense to move it back. Trial fitted atlas axle with x pack and 7.5 X alloys and they stick out as is topic link: http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showflat...&page=0#232066 Probably have axle made up by Fossie in the end as he is a pro (pm me some prices mate, I have a 2.8i unit complete to exchange).

Good stuff m8, I agree with Gary here dont fit an Auto Tunnel, they just are not tall enough especially if you are going to ever fit a T5, I have had 2 cars with Auto tunnels fitted and had to rip them both out

Gary does a nice rounded tunnel that stays with the character of the car rather then the horrible square ones you can buy !
