    mk1 escort zetec st170 project

Hello! Bought this car not long ago and I'm planning a zetec st170 conversion. Just a few pictures to start with..

Done a bit of welding so far, need to do a bit of paintwork next. The trouble is I don't actually know what colour this is? The whole car is the same colour, and from looking at 70s ford colours it looks a bit like 'dark bright aqua.' but to be honest i've no idea it could be completely different. Can anyone shed some light on it?

Just got myself a type 9 mate. Wasn't aware of the rx8 six speed being suitable! Interesting info for possible upgrade in the future though cheers!

Cheers guys. I've got a standard st170 engine to go in but in time developments/head work might be a possibility. Just want to get the car working first

Re: mk1 escort zetec st170 project

    Bit of an update!

Nice strengthening patch (covered in a bit too much filler in this pic) welded in and in the process of being smoothed with filler

Just about visible is a bit of bulkhead repair too

Coming along nicely really. Even if bodywork takes ages!

    A bit of primer!

    Then finally some paint!

Still in need of a polish, but not a bad go really.

Good to feel like some progress is being made.

Should finally be time to put the engine in the engine bay soon.

Nice one mate sounds cool, I'll be attempting that sort of route to get the full use from the ST170 engine I reckon. We'll see when the time comes!

Re: mk1 escort zetec st170 project

Been a while since I updated this! Thought I'd wait until I had some progress though..

    Here's the engine!

    Here's the Retro Ford parts!

Whipping the sump off and getting the old gasket off.

Little bit of a clean up.

New oil pick-up pipe. Lovely stuff.

    New sealant

    Phwoarrrr

Pretty nice item the sump is. Not the cheapest sump option but it does look the business.

Clutch fork and clutch bearing in the type 9 bell housing.

    Ready to go in!

    On its way in!

aaaand then it didn't fit in.

I'd read the type 9 would fit with minor tunnel massaging.. but I'd read that in a thread not specific to the zetec conversion. In short, I didn't read enough and tried to fit the Zetec engine, type 9 gearbox with Sierra bell housing into a standard mk1 Escort tunnel. It was never going to fit.

So I got the grinder out again and chopped out the tunnel.

It's in there now, with a good few war wounds from the initial fitting attempts. 2 steps forward, 1 step back! Just got to repair those scrapes, fit a new transmission tunnel and fit a new gearbox mount now!

Re: mk1 escort zetec st170 project

Well, yes and no. I've moved house and had a new garage built which has taken far longer than expected but the car is here now and a few little jobs are getting done.

The tunnel is almost welded in
Gearbox mount is made and is just waiting for paint
Prop shaft has been trial fitted
Engine jobs like cam belt, water pump, spark plugs are done

Not really got any pictures so it's a bit of a lacking update but I'll hopefully have some soon as these little jobs get finished.
