Well you might have 12V going to the coil from the battary and also have the earth coming from the ECU to the coil to enable the primary winding in the coil to build up a charge do you have this earth at the coil? rembber when you check this make sure that the rotor arm in not in the firing position on the distributer cap. By cuting the earth in and out it allows the charge to build up in the primary winding and then jump to the secondary winding when the earth is cut out to travel along the HT lead. I'm not to sure if there is any diffrance between a S1 or a S2 distribtur but this could be the cause of the problem if there is a diffrent order to conect the 3 wires to the hall sender. This will have a live wire
    an earth
    and a signal wire

If these are not conected in the right order it would cause a problem. Check the live and earth at the hall sender plug on top of the distributer I belive the live and earth should be marked and then check for a singanl coming from the third wire while it is conected and the engine is turnning.

Try these tests and hopfuly you shoud be able to find the problem

Normally the its the dizzy, seen a few with ecu faults. Also check the plug on the dizzy - make sure its a good clean conection.

If it is hall effect you need to check the '0' wire while the engine cranks. Use an LED style circuit tester connected to earth. When you trun it over it should flash if the hall chip is doing it's job.

If you dont get the flashing check the leads going to the dizzy with the ignition on. You should have a live of around 5v, an earth, and the '0' signal wire should read between 4-8v. If they are ok check in side the dizzy as the magnets can move and effect the chip.

It is also worth checking the actual dizzy is turning too.

With ignition on you should have 12v on the + side and - side of the coil. As you turn over the engine the - should drop to zero. The + should drop to cranking voltage, no lower.

ECU faults are rare on all cars, it is normally down to poor diagnosis.
