    How do you decode a vin plate?

    Hi guys

    Does anyone have a link to somewhere that tells you how to decode a mk2 rs2000 chassis plate - e.g, trim colour, type etc? I've seen it somewhere on here before but I cant find it now!

    Thanks

    Yes mate but the 5th and 6th build date letter codes you will need to get from somewhere. The Burton catalogue has the full matrix within the first few pages.

    It may be on their website www.burtonpower.co.uk

    Re: How do you decode a vin plate?

    This is a helpful thread!!

    I have a GCAT V5 for my rs2000, going to get a vin plate made for it.

    Is the “Type” box for an RS2000 just GCAT?

    Cheers

    That code makes no sense?
    A mk2 RS will / should have a GCAT prefix = Germany / Saarlouis / Escort / 2 Door Saloon.

    Sorry Buddy, but this is incorrect. In the top left "Typ/Type" box, you can have GATR:
    G = Germany.
    A = Escort.
    T = 2 door.
    R = 1975.

    The long top right box "Fahrgestell/Vehicle No" is where you will find GCAT, followed by the rest of the additional numbers.

    Re: How do you decode a vin plate?

    I found the CF article that indeed suggest the 4th letter is date. Mine was built 77, first reg 78 so in fact i think it's GATT actually.

    Cheers for everyone's help though.

    Is it normal just to have all the boxes on the vin plate complete? Including colour, trim, brakes, transmission, drive side etc?

    Bit confused that it says type should have 5 letters and a number for an escort though...

    The PDF is pretty good, but has to cover a load of different cars.
    My RS only has 4 in the Type box, then the next box "Version" has an A in it. If I look on the PDF, there is no A for Escort.
    The next box over is where my GCAT number is.

    In fact the fourth letter of the "Type" is referring to the homologation year.
    My car is from 1979 and still has GATR.

    Apologies - quite right! Didn't appreciate the difference between type / Chassis #. Strange having essentially same info, bar the date addition as different code and next to each other!

    Exactly the same as mine. Mine is a 79 RS and also has GATR in the Type box.
    I did think that maybe mine was stamped incorrectly, but the homologation year makes sense. :-)

    Just looked through my collection of interior pics, and funnily enough headliners don't feature strongly for reference LOL! But, Black headliner does seem to predominate mainly in cars having Black seats & door cards etc. I have one pic with a 'chocolate' trim that has a putty roof liner and several with the beige trim also having a 'putty' coloured roof. Sort of logical for light coloured trim to include light coloured roof! Click image for larger version Name:	Front View (49a).jpg Views:	65 Size:	141.6 KB ID:	88007

    UY: U = year = 1978 ; Y = month = February.
