One of my old mk2 escorts used to do the same. It was my only car at the time and was great fun (not) in the winter when I parked up somewhere to see the shock on the faces of pedestrians when all that steam blasted out form underneath as I walked into the paper shop etc.
I did this for a month or two then one day the head gasket went.

All the water was coming out the excess drain tube thing next to the cap My fan seems to keep it at a constant temp if put on when it gets hot, so today as is boiling again i think ill stick it on when the car gets up to temp Oh and its a piece of piss to fit, just make up mounts, even if its cable ties! and then wire a switched positive (switch in car) and negative to earth (mines on one of the rad bolts)

My old Mk1 used to do the very same thing... i "fixed it" buy running the overflow to a non expansion type of tank as fitted to mk4.5 cortinas. Gravity done the rest

    Cured mine

In my x-flow mkII i have an old fiesta fan and that does the job
no probs best to have it on a switch and have a good
temperature gauge though having on all the time will drain
    loads of power

The head gasket was the problem the whole time,as was in my case as well.
I live in Greece an drive in a traffic nightmare. I had some troubles with the cooling the 1st summer I had my escort. A back-flush of the radiator and heater core revealed the culprit, Sludge. The temp after that never went above 1/2 and I'm talking about slugging through traffic at 38-40 celsius. That lasted about two years. Then I noticed the temp going up when sitting to 3/4 and a few times almost to the red. Another flush of the system didn't help,it was clean. I almost bought a bigger radiator and electric fan. A freind suggested it was the head gasket. I wasn't loosing any water from the system I told him. He said "with the engine running at operating temp look at the water circulating in the radiator,do you see any bubbels?" Well I looked and about every 10 seconds or so I saw i hiccup.
I replaced the head gasket and all is fine.
