    Essex BV info neede please

Hi guys I have just purchased an essex V6 that has the following spec.
Ported and polished heads with standard exhaust valve but 46mm inlet (standard 41mm) hepolite Pistons piper 270 cam.
I didn't get a matching inlet manifold I do have a standard one is it a DIY job to match the inlet with the
Head does this actually need doing?
Lastly what sort of power can I expect from this engine?
    Cheers Chris

its well worth porting the standard inlet manifold, especially around the carb base.
assuming your running a 38dgas carb at a guess 160-170bhp

Many thanks Graham yes it will most likely be a 38 160+ would be very nice. Is it worth thinking of upgrading the carb?
    Cheers Chris

its a difficult engine to do carb upgrades with out spending a fortune. 40DFI5 will give more power but needs jetting very rich, fine for racing but not so good for road, a holley would probably be better, triple webers really are the best way to go but cost serious money.

i do recall seeing somewhere twin 38 dgas set ups would would probably be a good compromise

You can turn out the 38DGAS chokes approx 2 mm. This was done on a engine I've dyno tested some years ago. It was build by a well known English tuner. Head, inlet and carb where prepared + camshaft. I do believe I received approx 160 - 170 Bhp but will check on the dyno sheet.

Thanks again Graham I will probably just keep with the 38 as I want the car to look original under the bonnet as possible.
    Thanks again

bigger chokes are the main gain by using the 40dfi5 carb, 32mm instead of the dgas 27mm. so opening the chokes a couple of mm will certainly add a good bit of airflow , Dgas throttle spindles are very thick, you could certainly gain some airflow thinning them down

Or you can make a spacer for an IDF 40 or 48.... Putting the carb on linear (front to back) rather than transverse. Need weld the inlet. Yes, porting and matching the inlet is a great idea.
