Spotters guide to RS four spoke alloy wheels

I've seen the question "Which wheels are these" asked so many times that I thought I'd better post this :

Capri Laser wheels are 6" x 13" with taper seat wheel nuts and have thicker spokes than the Mk2 RS wheels

RS2000 Mk2 wheels are 6" x 13" with flat seat wheel nuts - earlier GKN manufactured wheels have slightly thinner spokes than the later Ford only branded RS 4 spokes (Dove grey and polished)

Both have the same offset and use the same centre caps (Capri ones were plain black RS ones have RS on them)

7" x 13" wheels were offered in the Ford RS parts catalogue as an accessory for Capri and Fiesta (fitted with X-pack round arch extensions)
These were not listed for Escorts by Ford Motor company even though they do fit. These use flat seat wheel nuts. These have a Ford RS logo cast into one of the spokes. (these are made by Ronal - on one spoke)
    Finished in silver metallic

7.5" x 13" wheels were offered as an accessory for Escort and Capri with wing extensions (ie X-packs) and these use flat seat wheel nuts. These are made by ATS (on the back of one spoke) Finished in silver metallic.

Wheel nuts for standard 6"x13 "factory fit wheels are chrome with flat washers and the 7" and 7.5" wheels could use these or be fitted with Black chromed nuts which were listed in the catalogue along with centre caps that had a black RS logo on a silver back ground ( still the same size cap though).

There are also 6" x 13" GP1 wheels, which are made by ATS, these are the same width as the standard wheel but have deeper spokes - the wheel nuts sit down deeper holes, and have webs on the rear of the spokes to provide extra strength, these have an H75ab part number on the front of the wheel on one spoke, which identify them as a unique RS part. Silver metallic again.

Then FWD offset wheels were made for Fiesta SuperSport in a 6" x 13" - these have very little rim to them, and the Series X accessory catalogue lists 6" x 13" for Fiesta, Escort 3 and Cortina - these are very similar to SuperSport rims but they have an RS and Ford logo cast into one of the spokes.(branded as Ronal) Silver again.

    SuperSport Wheels :

(thanks to RobRS2 for the above picture)

Ronal Series-X FWD wheels (Thanks to MondeoMark for the photo)

Then there are the Mk1 wheels 5.5" x 13" for a standard Mk1 Escort, flat seat, Pearl grey metallic and diamond cut and laquered finish. These use centre caps which push through from behind.

And the Gp1 Mk1 wheels 6"x13" flat wheel nut seat, with the tyre valve coming out of one of the spokes through a circular casting and centre caps which fit from behind.

I have also seen (well I've got one actually) a version of the MK1 Gp1 wheel with a MK2 centre cap sized hole dated to 1980. (another Ronal) and painted silver metallic.

6" x 14" 4 spoke alloys were also available, made by Pirelli and sold in Italy, these are really rare, and use a taper seat nut. I've only seen 1 set on a car, and one other set for sale.

It's a minefield of confusion - that's without getting into RS3100 Capri and JPS Capri Mk2 wheel differences as well !!!!

    Good Luck.

rob i take it you own a set(or maybe 2) of each of those wheels. are the wheel nuts a different size in depth between the 7" & 7.5" wheels? this is a good thing you have done rob.

They are the same wheel nuts for Mk2 Escort 6" wheels, 7" wheels and 7.5" wheels.

(All flat seat, same depth 19mm hex 12mm thread)

I have a set of each type of the Mk2 Escort wheels.

6"x13" RS alloys, Gp1 6"x 13" alloys, 7"x13" Ronals, and 7.5 x 13" ATS alloys, and all the steel wheel variants too.

I didn't forget them Dave, as Jay is right, and the wheels I was describing are the same as the one he's posted the photo of.

Dave "The Custom" has 7" Ronals on his car, not 6 inchers.

I've added a photo of the 6" Gp1 Ronal to the original post.

Re: Spotters guide to RS four spoke alloy wheels

    Hi,
wanting to install these wheels (Capri Laser 6"x13") on my Escort 940, which are the correct nuts if I want to keep the original studs (with English thread, not in metric)? Taper seat wheel nuts are ok?

If they are Capri Laser ones then the tapered nut is the one to use.

Mexeco, have you got a picture of the taper seat wheels nuts for Capri Laser wheels?
And has your Escort got original studs, with English thread?
    Thank you for your kindness.

Here ya go mate-the tapered washer is loose around the nut on these.
    I am unsure which thread they are-the car is a 1969 mk1.

    Hope that helps mate.

Re: Spotters guide to RS four spoke alloy wheels

Wow! I never thought there are so many differences!
I used those from a Capri Laser which I bought for 80 quid (a set of 5 with tyres, delivered) in 1999 on my 1969 Mk1 (very early model with bonnet release button on the front grille). I had to change the stud to Mk2's studs as the threads are different. Previously, I fitted those wheels to a Mk2 Escort using the same tappered nuts that came with the alloys. I have pics of these rims and will post here if anyone wanted to see. See my avatar.
These alloys are so rare in this part of the world. I have never seen another Ford with RS 4-spoke alloys here. That should make them worth something

My Capri laser has a very similar number on the wheels.
Says 11 instead of h, the rest is the same so I would say Laser alloys .

how can a mk1 wheel be dated 1980 ? would that date not sugest that the wheel was made 5 years after the mk1 ceased production ?
also i think i have a jps capri alloy, i think they should be included for clarity ? mike.

Simple to check guys without looking at the wheel nuts, the webbing on the lazer wheel is a lot thicker than the rs wheel especialy as it gets closer to the wheel nut. Hope this helps.
