    Type9 gear selection problems!

v6 Type 9 5 speed, fully checked over/rebuilt but gear selection is mushy and imprecise, easy to get reverse instead of 1st and hard to find 3rd... often get 5th .... no 3rd/4th plane spring action. I have a similar box in another car and it is a joy to use, so light, firm and precise.

tried a new short shift lever, no difference. Thanks for advice in advance.

Gear lever bush in the end of the box that slides over the selector and receives the fork of the gear lever - check to see if either there is one installed and/or whether it's worn.

Is the metal race one better? The car is used for road rallies? P

If you take the gear lever out you will see it underneath - no need to remove gearbox - should be able to see it from inside the car.

Not sure on the metal one as I've never used one as my car's a road car.

I'm sure the metal one is to last longer and give more positive shifts though. Just wouldn't want to use one in a road car as it may end up being noisey (if you have a quickshift kit installed).

Re-reading your first post though it could be that the spring that returns the gear lever to neutral position could be broken. But check the saddle first.

I'd guess the spring in the tailshaft assembly hasn't been correctly engaged when refitting too from the sound of that.

Have bought one of the Nylon filled competition saddles. I will try that when it arrives. As to the spring.........? P

It greatly improved the slopiness in the lever movement but detents for reverse and 5th gear plane are still off.... box out so!
