    Coil pack to earth ?

    Hi,

Pretty new in engine management, but read a lot.
I've bought a N/A Cosworth from someone on this forum. http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthread.php?t=549860
engine supplied with all hardware, including Typhoon 2 ECU with complete loom, so I installed this 'package' into my Escort mk2 in place of a 1.6 Xflow.
I did fired the engine last tuesday, just a few seconds because of no coolant in engine yet. Just to validate all the connections with ECU, pump, sensors, check the throttle bodies,...
All went fine, but yesterday, no more sparks. I did not change anything !
I've checked all connections, power ECU, charge again the battery, ... Check the cranck sensor, ECU is fine with it, check TPS, ok. Pump is working, check the 2 wires that came from ECU to Coil... Engine is earth connected, ...
I have power to the coil, but I never connect the coil to the chassis. But it has started like this.
So my question, do the coil need to be wired to the ground ? thru the metallic part thru fixing holes ?

There should be 3 wires to that type of coil...? Was that just a typo?

Anyway, the coil will have a permanent live feed to the middle pin, and then the ecu uses the other two wires to (charge and) fire the HT spark.
    Do you have a spark?
Did you check the plugs? are they wet?

Chances are , you have fouled the plugs.

yes 3 wires, but as you said middle is 12v. I've checked the 2 from ECU connector to coil, there are ok.
I have some sparks, but not often, that's strange ....
And yes the plugs comes wet. I have a pressure gauge on the Fuel regulator, fuel is coming correctly.
I've check the resistor at coil, both primary 0.8 ohms, checked all cables, ok.
    Replaced the plugs.
I can't understand why it has started 3 days ago, and change nothing, no more start.

I know its a while ago but are you sure on the coil resistance as with that ohm reading its pulling nearly 16A! Most ECU's would struggle with that and would need a separate coil amp / driver?

The ECU will have current-limiting output drivers.

Agreed but what would be the effect on coil charging?

What is battery voltage during cranking ?

And if the plugs are wet, bin them and fit new ones.

And you're saying all sensor readings are sensible on the ecu both before and during cranking ? This ecu is installed correctly, and has been tuned correctly for the engine you are using ?

Re: Coil pack to earth ?

A while ago, it has worked, just not cabled correctly !
I missed something and swapped some cables...can't remember how, when, but "wasn't me" as kids said
    My fault.
Now The engine is back from tuner for a refresh. On year later, I'm doing same things
