Xflow timing and firing order please help :)

Right people please can someone who knows how explain to me what I'm doing wrong?? I've got 1600 xflow I've changed my dizzy from electronic back to a points distributor coz my electronic one broke. Xflow firing order is 1243 correct?? Block at front is 1 2 3 4 at back bulkhead correct? How do I determine top dead center?? Thanks in advance

Firing order on a xflow is 1243 which isn't a regular firing pattern. Most 4 cylinder engines are 1342.
1 is at the front, 4 is at the bulkhead.

There are two TDC's when lining up the marks on the front pulley and front cover. One for cylinder number 1 and one for cylinder number 4. You have to make sure that you have TDC on number 1 to set the timing. When looking for TDC on number 1 the valves need to be shut. At the same time you have number 1 cylinder firing cylinder number 4 piston will be at TDC with the valves open. The easiest way to check is to take the rocker cover off.

TDC on number 1 = valves shut and rockers NOT moving on number 1, and valves on number 4 moving.
TDC on number 4 = valves shut and rockers NOT moving on number 4, and valves on number 1 moving.

Remember that the cylinder cannot "fire" with valves open so only when the valves are closed do you have the relevant cylinder to set the timing on.

So in theory I've got a 50% chance of getting it right? Man I must be so unlucky lol tried like 8 times n must be setting it to number 4's firing stroke. So number 1 is at it's firing stole when 4's inlet valve is fully open right? Or once inlet valve is closing and exhaust valve has opened?

Just check the #1 cylinder - if the two rockers for it are loose, its on its firing stroke - its as easy as that and then use the appropriate marks.

If you don't want to take the rocker cover off, take the spark plug out of number on cylinder, put your thumb over the spark plug hole, turn the engine clockwise with a spanner on the front pulley. When you feel compression hissing past your thumb the the next time the crank pulley mark comes to the TDC mark on the front cover, the engine set up in number one cylinder firing position.

Can't remember what way the distributor turns but say it turns anti-clockwise (reverse these instructions of it turns clockwise), you need to turn it slowly clockwise with the distributor cap off and the moment the points begin to open (you will see a small spark), the terminal that the rotor arm is pointing to on the distributor cap is for number one cylinder. Connect number one spark plug lead to that. Lightly tighten the distributor clamp and fit the cap. The next lead (anti-clockwise) should be number two, then four, then three. That's basic timing to get it started, you'd need a timing light to set it spot on.

Do the plugs spark when taken out of the engine or not?

most likely either the timing is retarded, or the plugs are fouled with fuel

Plugs are sweet and I'm pretty sure I've got timing mark lined up before tdc so surely won't be retarded??

yes but which side of the distributor cam is the heal of the points, and are the points on the edge of opening, merely having the rotor pointing at the correct ht lead is no where near close enough

Yes I'm pretty sure points are opening at right time but what do you mean which side of the distributor cam is the heal of the points? I nearly got it's started earlier but got a splutter n flame come out of the carb I'm taking it that I'm out on the dizzy?

picture the square part of the shaft in the dizzy that opens the points, if you turn the dizzy body you can move the points to the other side of that cam

Hi, I have a ford cortina mk3 with a 1.3l engine. I removed and cleaned the whole engine and put new parts and I need help in fixing the timing. Is it 1243 for this engine as well or is it 1342? Plus which side is cylinder 1 because I’m not sure since these engines have an inverted operation apart from other normal 4 cylinders. I fixed the cam and crank sprocket right with the two marks facing each other. And now it’s just about the timing from the distributor.

    Thank you.
