if you have the space for them, do so. remember you will need a different ecu for ignition. try burtons for a manifold etc. hope this helps
40s will be fine until you get near the 200 bhp region. The carbs would have to be set up properly on a rolling road along with the ECU you will need to run the ignition. Have a look at my website if you need more info.
Have you got any idea of a base setting to get it running?
jet size, choke size etc?
What ever jets/chokes are already in there will probably be close enough to at least get it running. There is no point wasting money getting a closer guess because it will be changed when you rolling road it.

Thats a tad optimistic I reckon 40's will be fine for the standard motor but you'll need 45's if your planning anything over 140-150 bhp IMHO40s will be fine until you get near the 200 bhp region.
As for the jets on 40's try:
36mm chokes
145 Main jet
190 Air corrector
F16 Emulsion tubes
THIS IS ONLY A ROUGH GUIDE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
140 bhp is only 4 bhp more than a 2lt gets with a single 36mm throttle body in a Mondeo!!! Dunnell state the 40s a fine on a 1.8 producing 155 bhp and I can't see there being a problem until you get beyond that. If your carbs get to big you end up losing low down torque anyway. I would not fit carbs to a ZETEC when it is cheaper to use motorbike throttle bodies and get all the benifits of fuel injection.

Strange then that webber supply 45's (155 bhp) with the alpha kit when using carbs. 40's will be at their limit at 150 bhp and for a 2.0 45's are the ideal size. I found this to back me up on a zetec website:140 bhp is only 4 bhp more than a 2lt gets with a single 36mm throttle body in a Mondeo!!! Dunnell state the 40s a fine on a 1.8 producing 155 bhp and I can't see there being a problem until you get beyond that.
Use the following carbs for each application:
1.6 ltr Twin 40s
1.8 ltr Twin 40s/45s
2 ltr Twin 45s
YOUR ZETEC WEBSITE NO LESS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm just trying to help him out, he doesn't not want to buy some 45s if his 40s will do, and on a standard engine 40s will be fine. He stated that he doesn't want maximum power (for that he would need 45s) and I think he will get pleny of bhp and more importantly torque with his 40s.
A 2lt on 45s should produce 160-165 bhp when properly mapped, so Webber are behind the drag curve again!
Dunnell (the info you quoted from my site came from Dunnell) reccomend the use of 40s on a 1.8 and with their ECU that should produce 150-155 bhp.
So put 40s and a 2ltr with a decent ECU that has been properly mapped and I can't see why you wont get 155-160 bhp and a little bit more low down torque than an engine running 45s. For a daily driver I would prefer low down torque to top end power any day.
I am slowly learning not to trust Webber, there are not the company they used to be and there cutomer service sucks really. A friend of mine had one of the Alpha ECUs on his Westfiled and it packed in and they charged a lot of money to fix it. For ECUs go to DTA, Omex or Emerald, I have an Omex ECU waiting to go on my XR4i and their customer service has been very good. I will be using Emerald for my Escort and they are always quick to answer my question, often the answer are from the legend that is Dave Walker.
I have the 40's so they will be going on for the moment. Does anybody know how jet sizes relate to drill sizes?
Cheers
ref the powers scales this is from Retro cars this month article all about zetecs
A 30% power increase from just changing induction & ignition system seems highly unlikely on the 1.6 engine as it is designed for economy and runs very small valves.....................1.6Litre -120-125 bhp
140 = 1.4mm 170 = 1.7mm 80= 0.8mm thats what I think anyway.................Does anybody know how jet sizes relate to drill sizes?
On the ECU front, there is another tuning legend that you can get ECU's and mapping from, He used to do all of Wobbly Walkers engine Dyno'ing. Has worked For Burtons and still does, worked at Brian Harts for years, Ran the Lotus Sevicenter at Wansted Park Road, Ilford
Steve Greenald , Track'n' Road, Noaks Park Ind Est, Hainault, Essex. Just of the A13 10mins from the M25.
