Wink Found old race Pinto, what parts are in it??

    Helo Folks,

I have found an ex race-escort with some intressting parts in it.

Now I want to use the engine, can anyone tell me what parts are in it?
I've allways worked with xflow, this will be my first pinto.

Stroke is +-78mm, bore 91.5mm. thougt original bore is 90.8?
These are the pistons, what brand is this? not original ford?

This is the camshaft: I can't find any ford stamp on it.

This is the crankshaft. Also here I cannot find any Ford stamp.

Valves, 36 and 44.5mm. Thought this is not original as well?

Pistons come out of the block 0.1-0.4mm. This pic by example was one of 0.25mm

    This was the old racecar

    Thanks for helping me.

crank and rods are standard ford, pistons are cast karl schmidt standard replacement type, inlet valves are oversize cam is a burton rally/race profile if i recall correctly.

Head looks like it has not been skimmed by much; can you measure the head-thickness.
Other than the Burton BF63 cam there is not much 'race' about the engine.
    What was it used for?

I was just about to say, the material between the plug and face of the head wouldnt say compression is high enough for a BF63..

    Ok, thanks for the information.
I was told the escort was used for speedway...
What can I do to encrease the compression?
Other pistons? Or machine off some material from the blok/head?

    Thanks

Looking at the photo of the car, where do the rear bars of the roll-cage mount to??
    Didn't think that was allowed.

Increase compression by skimming (taking material off) the head.

    Leon,
As you can see the bars were mount on the plate.
I cannot check it anymore because the shell is allready gone.
The guy who sold it to me, his dad raced with it in the early 90s. After that, the car was standing outside for about 15years.
Maybe then, the rules were less strictly

Re: Found old race Pinto, what parts are in it??

For the BF63 which is a nice torquey cam, you better have at least 11.5:1 CR but these cast pistons will not survive at that levels of CR. valve sizes seems fine but what about the port work on the head ?
I think if you want to keep the BF63 then you really need forged pistons, fresh rods may be safe enough to use when you fit them with ARP bolts up to 7200 and occasional 7500 rpm ( may be little more but I do not have much experience with standard rods ). However, please consider the possibility that these rods may well be tired enough to go to bin.
Alternatively, you may like to use a milder cam which would work with all these standard bottom end components. Depends on your target and budget.

When the pistons come out of the block like that, how much does that affect CR? And the bore was larger too? How much CC would that be, and increased CC boost CR, right?

pistons out the block can have quite an effect on compression, but has no effect on engine cc. the bigger bore would of increased engine capacity by roughly 40cc

The head looks to be fitted with Group one size inlet valves so there's no reason the engine can't make decent power if the head's had a good porting job done. The cam looks like it could be a copy of the Burton BF63 judging by the letters embossed on the end it.

Back in the eighties we saw 148 bhp at the wheels on split 48's with a similar set up and the BF 63 cam. The bottom end was fitted with steel rods and Schmitz pistons and no more than 10.7.1 compression. The engine was very torquey which was put down to the BF 63 cam.

Re: Found old race Pinto, what parts are in it??

Pardon my rambling calculations which are based on a number of assumptions....
Assuming the head is near standard volume but was skimmed reducing the volume to 46cc and the gasket is standard with a bore of 92.5 and a crushed height of 1.63 then the Comp ratio would be 10.15 this is made up of 0.12 increase by the bore going from 90.8 to 91.5, 0.32 by the light skim and 0.48 by the piston pushing out of the bore by 0.25mm.

You have an option of using a thinner Rheinz gasket at 1.3mm and this up compression to 10.5 if you use an Adjusa gasket which is 94.5mm bore diameter but 1mm thick you get 10.85.

The bore increase from 90.8 to 91.5 increases capacity to 2024cc

this might sound a silly question (and probably is!) but, how do you measure the head thickness and what should a non skimmed one be?

answered my own question - 94.5mm from what i can find on google

Usually tell by how close it is to the spark plug hole, plus there are a couple of tabs on the head surface that disappear when you take a lot off them, I have a few virgin heads at home, I can measure them if you like

If you have the head off I would measure the chamber volume as to do anything else is just estimating the volume.

Thanks wozzah but its alright. I have measured mine and 94.2 mm. Another one i have in the garage is 94.5 mm so it all ties up

I am going to make an attempt at measuring the chamber volume using the guide I found on here

The only way to measure the chamber volume properly is to use a flat perspective sheet and a burrette.
I suppose you could use an approximation based on 48cc chambers and -0.3mm off the gasket thickness.

Which gives you near 10 to 1 with a 1.3mm Rheinz gasket
    Stroke is 76.95mm
