cheapest solution for duratec water rail

I have been looking at several solutions from cosworth, retro ford, sbd etc.

Going on looks and practicality the SBD design gets my vote but each of these are a huge amount of money for what they actually are (maybe im just being tight)

what i'd like to know is, has anybody got a cheaper solution? has anybody modified the existing item? i read somewhere something about a transit water rail fitted to RWD transit duratecs

So is there a magical solution for a fraction of the price?

    Cheers, Steve

i think it is either you make your own up or you buy one i have seen a couple of nice home made items made out of thick steel plate copying the retro ford item but not a lot else. If you find a solution with out paying the bucks let me know i am always interested in people making a fix for a common problem.

cant remember exactly, SBD are great at what they do but if you want the best you usually have to pay the price.

Im quite tempted to have a go at making one and see how it goes

Re: cheapest solution for duratec water rail

That's the cheapest i have seen by far, i have started to create my own (any excuse to be fabricating down the shed)
if it doesn't work out i'll definitely be in touch, do you have any pictures of it fitted?

Does it sit underneath or above the exhaust manifold?
what do you think postage would cost (never bought anything from Oz before)

    many thanks

Re: cheapest solution for duratec water rail

i'll hopefully squeeze in a few hours down the shed tomorrow so should see some progress,

The original has one large water outlet, a slightly smaller one the other side and then an even smaller one on the bottom at a 90 degree angle, what are each of these for?
Just trying to work out what water outlets i need

Order a Ranger Duratec water outlet and the pipe that connects to it, or attach your own. I just bought these for my Duratec Cortina, Total is $120 USD.

I went this route after fabbing, and re-fabbing my own about 6 times due to some leaks, and also having to scoot the engine back. I was about to fix a leak for hopefully the last time......and then said F-it, i'm buying the Ranger outlet.

I wish I had pulled one from a parts yard when there was one......would have saved me on top of that!

    Hi,
It sits over the exhaust manifold and clears the original 4 into 1 types.
The side pipe can be rotated to whatever angle suits your rad. inlet, and can be removed easily to remove your headers without having to un-bolt the main elbow from the back of the head.
I'll arrange a photo of it installed, and find out approx cost of shipping to UK.
Should be good value to you at the moment the way the UKP/AUD is at the moment lol.
e mail me so we can share more details.
    Roger.

    Hi again,
Shipping from Aus. to UK is 18.45UKP and takes 1 week.
So all-up cost including post+packaging is $383 AUD or 181UKP at current conversion rate.

Hey I was going to just PM you to ask about this but, low on the post count. Do you have the part numbers hanging around for this? I'm having a hard time finding it on the parts diagrams.

Nevermind I'd found it hiding, the picture on tasca ford's website is really small.
Adapter (the rear part) 7L5Z-8K556-A $55.44
Connector (steel pipe over the header) 1L5Z-8592-CF $42.09

I'll try and grab some tomorrow its cold outside. Its really low profile on the back of the motor. Both pieces are required since the steel pipe has two orings on it that seat inside the aluminum housing. But it is steel so it'll be easy to make water tight welds if you hack it up.

I set the steel pipe in place since its a real tight fit and I'm not sure how I want to put it in yet.

Just digging through some old threads and thought i'd upload a pic of the water outlet i ended up fabricating myself, if an ally one come up ridiculously cheap i'd probably replace it but i'm happy enough considering it was made from steel out of the scrap bin

(that's gaffa tape over the end from doing my leak test)

Re: cheapest solution for duratec water rail

That's a neatly fabricated item 5tox. I'd be chuffed if I could weld a water-tight joint good enough to make this!

Just incase anyone is still looking for a cheap solution off the shelf this might help; This is the standard Ford water rail from a 2.5 Duratec crate motor that I bought. The second pic shows the part number. I'm guessing that it might be available from Ford - though maybe only in the USA.

Re: cheapest solution for duratec water rail

Damn, thats the ranger rail but it has that nice NPT bung on the top there. Does that also come with the steel tube with the oring seal that fits into the end? I decided that I was just going to weld a bung to that tube to get my coolant temp reading for my gauge and use the cylinder head temp for the ecu.

How was ford planning for you to use it then? You cant just stick a hose on the end of it.

I've no idea. In fact I was not even expecting to get it with the engine. I bought a 2.5 crate engine (they call it a 'service' motor). It came with the engine.

to me at any rate, its obvious that ford have another pipe fitted with an external o ring which goes inside it, quite common on modern stuff.

it looks to me like the casting is rough enough you could safely fit a hose with a jubilee clip to its outside

    Nice find!

It appears to be exactly the same, but with the boss in-drilled and tapped - not a big issue.

I can still do a very compact and the slimmest on the market only 24mm thick and has two tapped bosses for different temp senders. Side pipe runs over exhaust outlets. $AUD 340.
Can do 'with EGR' type, or 'without EGR type' designed so no blanking plate required.

Re: cheapest solution for duratec water rail

Resurecting an old thread here, but has anyone tried fitting the Mk3 Mazda MX5 (MZR/Duratec) water rail? I have just done a little bit of digging before I fork out a sum of cash on something that could potentialy be a cheap fix and have stumbled across this on the Mazda parts page. https://www.mazda-parts.com/oem-part...ItMGwtbDQtZ2Fz

cheapest solution for duratec water rail

If i see that link correctly that puts the water rail/pipe down the inlet side of the engine. I think i need a rummage around an mx5. as and addition I made an alternator bracket for my engine. I will try and put a picture up. It's a bit basic but works. It uses a cmax belt at 1353mm and tensioner to work with a 1 litre fiesta alternator.

Cost £63 excluding metal and labour for all the parts. Buying a full kit would £400 + hope it fits in the car 😂

Yes it does so you end up with both radiator hoses on the same side of the engine which didn't make sense for an Escort
It obviously works in an MX5 though!

I've gone for the Ford Ranger outlet shown in post #20, cost me £100 from a friend who imported 30 of them from the states in Feb this year
The steel outlet pipe is available from Ford for £81 but I'm not sure whether that will end up in the right place, so I will probably get an alloy tube welded to the outlet to fit an appropriate diameter hose to

The ranger one is super easy to cut and weld to fit your bidding. On mine the factory ford oring was screwed up, just measure it up and buy the right size viton or silicone oring AND safety wire the connection together.

Just to update this thread a little, I've just found another option regarding the water rail from Caterham; https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/174590247602
