    2.8i or grp1? help I.D my struts

    Hi Folks
I wonder can anyone more experienced with these parts shed any light on this for me?
Firstly, they have been converted to coilovers obviously so there are no part numbers.
The bottom of the strut is a fine M10 thread which would suggest GRP1 to me, but theyre not gusseted from the factory?
Also, they have threads for an insert retainer (that does nothing on a bilstein insert) so why is that there?
im unsure now as to what the bloody hell they are, and now dont know what bronze bushes and seals to order. I assume i can ignore the threads, leave off the retaining nut and fit a dust seal?
    the damper tube is 40mm
    thread is M10
the outside of the strut body is 50mm
    the inside is 46mmish

    cheers guys

i would say they are standard type strutts with screw in oil filled inserts that have been converted to accept billy inserts

i was half thinking that myself, is that possible? are the 2.0 and the bilstein legs the same apart from the hole in the bottom? the threaded hole in the bottom looks very well done though, doesnt look like it was drilled and tapped DIY but its very possible i guess!

They are Capri struts modified, as group 1 and 4 struts don't poke that far through at the bottom .

All inserts are oil filled, including Bilsteins.

yep got that but at this stage of them being modified, that doesnt really matter when it comes to the bush and seal kit since all the dampers and casings are the same diameter yeah?

    Hi,
Couple of problems that I can see with those struts.
You won't be able to get the adjusters off as they have welded around the top of threaded sleeve.
More importantly the seal sits in a lip machined into the inside of the strut tube to locate it, also the top of the strut/threaded area is going to fill up with water and muck, won't do the damper any good.
    Cheers.

Yep cheers for that - i had already anticipated that! so after i put in the new dust seals, i sealed between them and the damer casing with tiger seal before putting the retaining ring on. worked out perfect, there is nothing getting in there.
They are obviously some completely made up frankenstein dampers, as i bought new bushes for them, which also didnt fit - they are way too small for my struts

Odd struts them... look like capri due to how far the tube protrudes through the bottom, suited the GP4 inserts due to the M10 fine thread hole at the bottom but then they have a threaded top cap as per RS2000/std capri struts. Going off the fact the internal diameter of the new bush is the same size as the inside of the strut and from the early pic you posted showed some rubbing on the inside of the strut body it looks like they are std Capri struts drilled at the bottom and I would assume with a modified top screw-on cap to accommodate the insert. When you dismantled them did they have any bushes fitted? looks almost like the inserts run inside the body without bushes!
