Re: Zetec Install - Water temp sensor

I think the cambelt is rated to 80,000 miles but I wouldn't leave it quite that long! I'll be happy if my engine lasts half that . Still if I can get a few years out of it then I've got my moneys worth. Only a few hundred to replace it anyway

Not sure I'd want to trust those crimp connectors on a wiring loom, would be better to solder the joint and put heat shrink over the join.

Re: Zetec Install - Water temp sensor

They aren't ordinary crimp connectors. First you crimp them, then you apply heat. The heat melts the solder in them that gives a good join. The heat also melts the glue in the plastic part making the join water proof and strong. Don't worry I didn't cut any corners. I was advised against standard soldered joints as they are prone to stress fractures.

Yeah they are pretty good but a lot more expensive than the standard crimps. Cost me more for the 5 I needed than for a pack of 50 normal crimps

Percy do you mean lenghen? just make up same spacers they are individual on the GSXR ones, some of the other bikes have 2 cast together which isnt very good for this.

Yeah the top half is spaced out using spacers and the bottom part is bolted to a metal strip. Bigger spacers at the top and a redrilled strip at the bottom. Easy. Hardest part is to lengthen the linkages. Either weld new strip of metal on each one (not sure about the heat though) or just bend them inward until they reach

Well I have a base map loaded into the ECU now so I'm hoping that will run the engine well enough to get me to a rolling road (anyone know a good one near west london?). As for a laptop, if I need one it won't have to be very high spec. Anything that can run Windows 98 and has a small type com port would work.

Re: Zetec Install - Throttle Bodies Fitted

Getting excited now as its looking almost complete I think its looking quite smart, even if it desparately needs a clean

    Nearly there.

Does anyone know what type of plug this is?? Its the same as the one for the TPS and I would like to fit a proper plug instead of crimp connectors.

Worked out why the alternator bracket is giving me grief. The ST170 manifold is in the way! I'm sure Retro Ford have a solution as Dave is using the same manifold as me.

If anyone wants any bits cleared up or pics of any areas let me know .

when you gonna fire it up!

needs the cam cover polished up! took best part of a week to polish mine up so i wish i got one of these instead:

my mate Wootty sells them £34 posted (add £10 if you want anything etched on) see his site http://members.lycos.co.uk/sttdci/wootty/index.htm

plus he sells loads of other zetec shiney bits. very cheap for top quality stuff. his cam pulley cover is pretty sexy!

Not really too keen on that cover tbh. You can still see the manky standard part underneath. I will probably paint mine matt black as I don't want to take attention away from the throttle bodies

Although I would like one of them BDA cam covers

yeah i see what you mean. that cover is a replica of the ford racing one. for spark plug covers raceline does a nice subtle one (which i have got) or www.zxtuner.com have got a cool one in their "clearouts" section.

so when is the engine gonna get started up in anger then? is there much left to do

Here is the list of things to do...

    -Water temp sensor mounting
    -Rad plumbing
    -Starter motor
    -Fuel pump and piping
    -Throttle cable

Basically all the annoying little jobs that I couldn't be bothered with until now

Its a fuel pressure sensor as the ST170 doesn't run a return. Going to replace it with a regulator. Its just for illustration as the plug on the TPS is exactly the same.

I have kind of bodged the coil pack mount. It looks pretty cool though . Basically its the standard Mondeo coil pack mount turned upside-down and the bit sticking up is hacksawed off! One of the existing holes matches up to the mounting point for the water rail so its bolted on from that. Once I tidy it up a little and paint it, it should look pretty good. We have to have all the zetecs ready for summer so we can show people why its such a good conversion

Re: Zetec Install - Throttle Bodies Fitted

It's the body work thats holding me up, but it's getting there. The only things that I have kept standard on my car are the doors (both need small repairs), bonnet, boot and thats about it!!!! I have changed so much, including 5 linking a capri axle, compression struts, steel bubble arches etc it has taken a lot of time. My only worry is I have never driven a rwd escort, what if i dont like it?

We will have to get a meet going once there are some zetec escorts all finished, there is no doubts how good the conversion though.

Re: Zetec Install - Throttle Bodies Fitted

i bought 46mm throttlebodies out of Kawasaki ZX12R, arrived today.
I also ordered ST170 manifold. Forgot to order rubber hoses, but i think i have to check first are they good for me.
What's the inside diameter of the ST170 hose measured from bigger end ?
Kawasaki injectors should be enough for me, i think i do the dual stage 8 injector setup. using std focus 2.0 blacktop injectors in st170 manifold. kawasaki injectors for wide open high rpm.
    Cheers,
    Tepi

Are you sure those TBs wont be too big Tepi? Or are you going for 200 bhp +?

The 8 injector set up will be smart though, very flash.

that can happen when talking about carbs with too big chokes, but it's a bit different with injection.
but problems can occur with low speed driveability, caused by big changes in airflow when throttles open. this can be over come with progressive throttle opening. so that from idle to midrange throttles open very slow in relation to pedal travel.

They look almost identical to my suzuki ones so they should bolt straight up to the manifold one you have spaced them out.
