yes they look quite same. are yours made by mikuni?
can you measure hose size for throttlebody? are your hoses from st170 or from GSXR?

Re: Zetec Install - Throttle Bodies Fitted

Hoses are from the ST170. I can't measure them without removing them from the car but they were oval. When you slide them on the throttle bodies they become round. From looking at your throttle bodies I would say that they should fit. Bring the throttle bodies down to the Ford parts desk and try the rubbers for fit before you buy them if you are worried. You could always use some samco hose instead if its difficult to get hold of the Ford parts.

Is the 46mm the inlet, or outlet as they are tappered. I cant believe a motorbike uses 46mm throttle bodies?

Mine were 44mm tapered down to 38mm I believe. going by the same relationship yours should taper down to about 40mm?

i haven't actually measured yet. i was just reading year 2003 KAWASAKI ZXR12 specifications, and it was told there.
Nipondenso EFI with 46mm throttlebodies. Later bikes have sub-throttles to give lowspeed driveability.

Yep the suzuki's have the sub throttles in later models. They are controlled by the ecu so you are lucky you got the best ones

    HI,3 QUESTIONS.
1, why ir the engine so high at front ? what sumps on it.
    2. do you have a fuel return line? you mention a regulator, but the regulator sits in return not feed line. .
3, where to but st170 manifold, and from what year.
    cheers ,great thread

    Re: Zetec Install

Thought I would answer the above questions and post a few update pics so people don't think I've done a Yodi

1, Its a Retro Ford sump. Doesn't seem that high when you see it for real, maybe the pics are deceptive.

2, Just made a return line adaptor. Fits in place of the pressure sensor. Using a cosworth fuel pressure regulator.

3, Any ST170 will do, best bet is to try breakers.

    And here are the pics...

So close to finishing its frustrating. Just missing Classic Ford show . Just have to fill with water/antifreeze and get a cossie fuel filter. At least I don't have to use my old PC with extension lead

    Re: Zetec Install

Yeah, everything is done apart from the lambda mount. Waiting for zetec_escorts to send me one through the post and then I can weld it on and bolt the exhaust on properly. Then tax and insurance ready for Retro Cars show hopefully . I need to balance the throttle bodies so I'm gonna need to blag/borrow/buy some motorbike carb/bodies balancers. Because of this the idle is a little rough but everywhere else its running sweet as. Can't wait to take it for a spin. I'll post some pics later of the finished engine bay and some other bigs that I've done since the last update

Cheers for all the advice guys, couldn't have done it without you all.

Thanks to zetec_escorts (Glyn) for the lambda nut

Had a few running problems but it turned out that the throttle bodies were WAY out of adjustment. It runs pretty good now, just need to get it rolling roaded. Just got to phone around for insurance now (yay!) and then I can drive it. Here are the pics of the finished engine bay...

Here is a little video clip of the engine running. Sorry about the crap quality, I filmed it on my digital camera.

    Engine running

Just driven it to the petrol station and back and it attracts quite a bit of attention . Its pretty rapid but its running too rich at the moment. Can't wait to get it mapped properly.

Erm oil breather... yes... hehe. At the moment its venting to atmosphere but I'm going to use a bike bottle as a catch tank. I got the sleeve from a local motor factors. Its a little bit big tbh but it seems to work ok.

    Zetec Install - Finished-ish

Well this is the pretty much finished engine bay (well they are never finished are they) and I'm pleased to say that in the month or so its been done its been brilliant. I've had good fuel economy (ish) and smooth low rpm running and when you floor it the damn thing bloody shifts! I would recommend this conversion to anyone and would be glad to help anyone who wants to try and do it on the cheap. Total cost is around £2000 so pretty decent value as a 2k pinto would only just be this powerful (if that) and would be a bitch around town and at the petrol pump. Maybe this could be made a sticky as it is pretty much a complete overview of zetec installation and hopefully it can help other people

Yep soon as I have enough money I will be. I'm hoping for about 160bhp but I'll be happy as long as its over 150bhp. Either going to use Redline Racing in Iver or Southern Carbs.

What have done with regards to air filters? I was thinking of buying a blank base plate and one of the foam filters that Burtons sell.

So far I haven't done anything about air filters. I will probably get a set of four small universal k&n's as they just bolt onto the ends of the throttle bodies. I'm not touching foam filters after what happened last time!

    Re: Zetec Install

Right its had a power run at Track and Race rolling road and it got 144.7bhp. Not bad considering its on the base map. They said with a remap it should be good for at least 160bhp as my attempt at a map was a bit feeble to say the least! Fuel economy when cruising is really good. On the Brunters oldschool thrash I averaged 32mpg over the whole day (including the thrash!). That was mostly motorway driving in fifth gear but with the included track action it probably averages out. Of course if you redline it all the time the fuel economy is pretty dire. I would say its not a hard conversion but its a bit more involved than an xflow or pinto engine fit. With the Retro Ford bits the engine just bolts straight in so its mainly wiring and plumbing. If you had a spare 2k cash you could go for the weber alpha throttle bodies kit as it has a wiring loom in the kit already.

Getting it mapped hopefully the end of this month so will post the results here...

you should find the remap gives you better MPG too, it did on mine (mines a different setup but the principle is the same for proper fuel/air ratios, timing etc giving better efficiency)

    Re: Zetec Install

Guys, first hats of to richard and his car. Many people talk a great job but few finish with the business. It's I have been planning a zetec escort since about 98, got a good rolling shell, built a garage, started a body restoration (though it's freakishly good for a MK2), went to live in Germany for 2 years, got married, had two wonderful children and finally I am 'on it'.
Just built a rollover jig for the shell, sourced gsxr tbs, fuel pump, got the edis kit, picking up the spanner muncher zetec tonight and am well and trully commited.
Planning to use the gsxr injectors at first and am making a manifold & modded fuel rail that will utilise the standard gsxr twin bolt rubber mounts that go from round to oval perfectly. (It helps that I am a CNC programmer with good access to a CNC milling machine...)
Concept is for a standard looking Amber RS2 droop with a civilised kick up'ass from the zetec. The body resto is probably the major part of the job and certainly the most time consuming. If anyone is interested I will post a few pixels on here cos it seems the thread needs a new project now Richards is done.
