    Re: Zetec Install

Firstly - well said - Richard has been a big help to me whilst sorting all my bits for the conversion. I've got nearly everything and hoping to start at the weekend and he couldn't have been more helpful.
If you have any luck with modding the fuel rail on the TB's let me know because i am looking to use the gsxr injectors as well as the st170 ones. The DTA ecu ive got runs dual injectors so may as well utilize it. (also got launch control which should be fun.)
Cant wait till summer - should have a good few zetec conversions out there. If Richard gets his sorted

    Re: Zetec Install

Hi guys I'm still about. The pictures are not on the forum yet due to some upgrade issues. They should be back soon but if anyone wants them sooner pm me your email address and I can send all the pics in a zip file.

And my car is far from finished. I crashed it a whiles back and the whole front end is smashed. Gary at Retromotorsport is going to repair the damage and the car is getting upgraded a bit in the process. I'm fitting arches and split rims (not sure whether tarmac arches or gp2 zakspeed). Will be ready for the summer shows so look out for the new improved flying bogey! Will post pics probably in the restorations section as most of it is not relivant to zetec conversions. If I update the zetec side of things I'll post it here.

    Re: Zetec Install

Picked up the engine last night, only 81quid from ebay and only 30 miles up the road! Got it from a bunch of like minded petrolheads sharing a unit, It was like a remake of the fast and the furious!
Lifted the rocker cover and all looks sweet. Looking at the numerous threads, Ive yet to hear of anyone modifying the mondeo sump to fit the Mk2. Any pearls of wisdom out there?
'Have started on the inlet manifold the standard one is being measured on a CMM as we speak so I can write a program to machine one up. Images will follow
I notice the ST170 is the 'fold of choice and cant be knocked for ease of install, though I can't help feeling that with the injectors retained at the TB position more power is available. Jenvey confirm this on their site. Following on from this has anyone any experience of modifying the inlet ports i.e. filling up the void where the injectors would have previously squirted as this can't aid flow?

    Here goes another image attempt..

    well I can see it...

    Re: Zetec Install

Better throttle response from injectors closer to the head...good for torque....
Injectors near butter flies ....or even above ..better for top end power..specially at full throttle.....If you can program up the ecu to run 8 injectors....4 x close to head ..4 x above throttle bodies...you have a great setup...mind you the injectors above the butterflies to run from 3/4 throttle on to full....

So where do 160bhp 1 litre GSXR 1000s have their injectors??...
And enough torque to pull your arms off. I think the trick is to keep the manifold tract to a sensible length, again refering to bike layout.

If I finish before you then you copied me actually I believe they may have come back in fashion due to a certain Mr White I have wanted them since I first saw his car at Box Hill ages ago although I have heard they aren't very well moulded and are hard to get fitted right. Not sure if I can be bothered with the hassle, might go with some nice wide tarmac arches. See how much time and money is left after the car is repaired

    Re: Zetec Install

By welding a fuel connector on the bracket cut to the same shape as the pressure sensor. Can then run a pressure regulator off of it.

would it be possible to use the fuel pump from an st170 then there would be no need for the fuel regulator? But things are never normally that easy. :-(

Thanks. I spent a couple of hours at the local breakers looking for possible ways of doing it, but all the fittings were different sizes to the insert on the pressure sensor.

That might be possible if the fuel pump is a completely separate unit and doesn't receive signals from the ECU. Of course it would be an in tank type so you would need to adapt whatever tank you use so it can be bolted into the tank.

i think ill just get a barb tig welded onto the end as it will be easier than modding a tank etc..

    Re: Zetec Install

Yeah I did something very similar, although I welded a barb to a flat plate that was bolted to the flange on the fuel rail. If I had access to a tig welder I would probably do it your way though

No never got the chance. Was going to do it at the end of January. Its someway down on the list of things to do now If the Escort is not repairable (fingers crossed though) then I will strip all the good bits off of it and fit them in the pop.

No can't start striping the Escort otherwise it won't ever get repaired! Anyway the bulkhead cutout in the pop isn't wide enough for a zetec

Sorry to hear about the accident, i bet your missing the Escy

did you do anything with the fuel tank? does it not need a swirl pot as it is injection? (or keep it at least 1/4 full)

Never had a single problem using the standard fuel tank. Its a tall design so doesn't suffer from surge problems really. I have run it pretty low once or twice too.

    Thumbs up Re: Zetec Install

Hi folks, been v busy but things always take longer than you anticipate. The body is coming on ok, (both inner wings sorted, roof next....)
Anyway on the engine front I thought you may be interested in a couple of snaps of my (not quite finished) billet inlet manifold, plus if you're good you will notice the billet 1 piece alternator mount. Gave in and bought a sump (ebayŁ80!) so hopefully first install could be within the next week, followed with fabricating some mounts.
More to follow, when? who knows.

    Re: Zetec Install

I used an Emerald ECU with the standard zetec coil pack. If you just want to get running as cheap as possible then you can use the EDIS 4 setup on its own in limp home mode. It will run but it won't be ideal.

i know its kinda covered above but i cant get my head around it.

the st170 uses a returnless fuel system. How do I get around this if I am using the st170 manifold?

    Re: Zetec Install

Where the pressure sensor is on the end of the fuel rail you unbolt it, make a bracket the same shape with a barbed fuel pipe fitting on it and bolt on a pressure regulator

    Re: Zetec Install

No you use the ST170 fuel rail and injectors but just replace the pressure sensor in the end of the rail with a pressure regulator with a fuel return

I'm using a Sierra Cosworth fuel pump and filter in its cradle bolted to the boot floor under the standard fuel tank. You need to drill out the standard outlet and fit a bigger one to match the size of fuel pipe for the injection pump but other than that it just bolts on

thats what i meant, so replacing the st170s sensor with a zetec regulator?

I am actually using a st170 engine, do you think this will all still apply the same way?

i think i will prob use a aftermarket inline pump, then i can do a nice install in the boot.

    Re: Zetec Install

I don't know what the standard zetec ones are like but if it fits then it should be fine Any inline injection pump will work just make sure you mount it so it will be gravity feed as they don't suck fuel like a carb fuel pump.
