This is a bit off topic but i was curious after reading this thread Does anyone know if anyone has fitted the S3 RS engine to a mk2 with RWD?? If so what was the power like?? Maybe better off buying S1 and spending dollars on it as apposed to the probable cost of the RS engine??
Sorry to hijack thread

The later series 3 Black top engines i.e St170 have a two piece sump design. The Alloy ladder which apparently adds strength, and the Black tin bottom
The RS Turbo engine has a different alloy part, with a hole in the casting for the turbo oil return pipe. This could easily be turned into a crank case breather to help out the engine a bit, or even a return if need be, just a though.
I got a RS alloy sump for my ST engine and notice the difference then. (Got it for free due to a warrenty claim mishap at a dealership my friend works for. They are over £200 new)
I had to cut the back gearbox lugs off the sump to get clearance on my Talbot Sunbeam front crossmember
Let me clear this up
With the ST engine, u don't need to change the water pump because its a external one correct?
So can you bore the 1.8 black top to 2.0 ??
And are the heads the same?

IMHO....No and No.
Not enough metal in the block casting...
The combustion chamber volume is different. Fit a 1.8 onto a 2.0 and you increase the CR from 10:1 to 11:1.
A pic I found of the Silvertop, I've got anoither aswell but on a different computer with measurements of an 1800 silvertop

Here's the other:

The Ford Power Products drawing (with dimensions) is a 'Blacktop', Series 3, or whatever you want to call it.
The most obvious giveaway is the 2 piece sump, as well as the engine mount/cambelt cover, waterpump, exhaust manifold, etc.
Of course it is, my bad

Will the series three black top engine fit into a MK4 escort? My friend is looking for a new engine and has found one on ebay but as said its the series three so just needed to know before he bids on it
If you cant see your face in it,You havnt polished it enough!
So, in an attempt to unscramble my acheing brain, i need to ask these nodoubt very questions,
1. The 2.0ltr that is currently in manufacture is a series 3?
2. The RWD conversion parts offered by retroford, raceline, burtons etc are not suitable for series 3's?
I see Raceline are selling new crated 2.0ltr focus engines for £700 inc VAT. How is that on price lads? I am in Australia so not too sure how these price up over in the UK.
1. Todays Ford engines are Duratec, different engine. Dont think any cars are sold with these Zetec engines
2. Retroford make kits for both Blacktop and Silvertop
Retroford
http://retroford.co.uk/shop2/
Well, now i am even more confused :p
What do you suppose this is then? Raceline
Is it a duratec? or an old stash of zetecs?
Page behind your link is blacktop parts page
Duratec has exhaust on right hand side of car
Zetec has exhaust on left hand side of car
Main difference on series 1+2 & 3 are: Series 3 has a horizontal oilfilter attached to the engine block
Series 1+2 use an removable alloy pump in front of engine.
Series 1+2 use hydraulic tappets for the cam, series 3 use mechanical
Original Series 3 use a different type of sump (2 or 3 pieces) and different waterpump
Zetec engines use the old clutch/bellhousing pattern Duratec dont.
Duratec
Zetec (Silver) Series 1 & 2
Zetec (Blacktop) Series 3

Ahh OK so ALL blacktop zetecs are series 3. That helps alot.
Thanks svein for you're explanation and patience
FYI, the link works for me? here is a cut and paste from the site:

Does someone know what type of bracket to use (alternator and A/C) on the ZETEC series 3 (1.8 ltr) when mounting it in a Escort 1996. The one i've got (from series 1) does not fit with the waterpump.

Look into Focus and Mondeo enginebays from 1997-98 =>>
Escort only used phase 1 & 2 Zetec in Norway, I think?
Tnx Svein.
The Escort has been fitted with a "new" engine (Zetec 3), and i dont think the alternator on the Escort can be fitted as in Focus/Mondeo.
So if someone have any experience....
hi there, I'm looking at doing putting a zetec into my mk1, I'm from New Zealand so don't have as much access to conversion kits! I would like to know the best engine to choose before I make any investments. I want a 2 liter engine but not sure what sort. Any help would be great!
cheers Dave
the "best" zetec is the st170 engine. this says duratec on the cam cover but its a soupd up blacktop zetec really.
the best for you might be whatever is available more easily. blacktop probably better than silver but not enough i doubt to be a show stopping issue. someone posted recently that they had imported silvertops by mistake, try him ? or was that oz ?
Thanks for that, have been looking, have access to most types from wreckers but are quite pricey! Have managed to find a 2.0 blacktop from a 1992 automatic mondeo wagon for about 1/3 the price of all other engines i found. However it has a blown head gasket.
I take it being in a 1992, it will be series 1 engine?
My next question is what auxiliary items do i need to keep?
The engine is still in the car so i can take what ever! Cheers Dave
did anyone fit these http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/COMP-...mZ270511917711 into a silvertop?
in '95-'97 the yanks had the zetec escort and i do belive that had to be a s2 zetec, right?NOTE: Will only fit 1995-1997 & 2000-2002 Focus 2.0L ZETEC ...
Will NOT fit any other 2.0L Ford 4 Cylinder engine.
any ideas?

Having blown my Kent in France last year I decided to fit a Zetec to my single seater to give me a marked increase in power for very little expence. I chose a 2 litre Black Top because they seem to be freely available at the right price and of course bolt straight on to the Hewland/Ford adapter plate and I only had the front engine mountings to remake. I am running a 32/36 dgv 5a carb on the Kent manifold with a special adapter as used by the grass trackers and a Megajolt Jr. I found the carburation so easy to set up and a friend loaded up the electronics. The engine is in basically standard form except for a Dunnell flywheel and competition clutch and a Pace dry sump system. I believe the engine is an early Black Top but not sure what the exhaust manifold came off as i bought them at differant times. It is one of the tubular type as shown in the drawings and looks and performs pretty good for OE. The only problem I have experianced is the fact that it is revving a lot less than the Kent and I am having to put ratios in that are a lot higher than before, but I also have a lot more punch, so can pull them, but haven't quite got there yet as I dont know what it is revving to. Does any one have experience of runnig a similar set up and what kind of bhp I should be getting .
Can someone tell me how to find the engine code for a blacktop also i know someone that changed the waterpump housing on his silvertop to change rotation but it also gave a better angle for the outlet pipe... Can this be done for a blacktop. Cheers davy
im currently doing a rwd zetec build using a focus rs engine.
This is a series 3 engine so has one missing gearbox lug... would that be a problem? how many people use series 3 engines? is it just a case of not putting a bolt in at all and it being fine?
I also have a cvh sump for my engine but would much prefer to keep the 2 piece alloy/steel sump as it has the focus rs turbo return already in place, how many people have kept the two piece design but modified it for rwd? do i just have to trim the alloy piece where the starter motor needs to be? and then modifiy the steal piece to suit my cross member? any pics would be great
Im using a T5 gearbox btw
thanks matty
itll be in a escort cosworth not a mk2 escort. im going to fit my pinto sump for now while im doing the mock up but i want to get the two piece sump modified so i can retain the original design as much as possible.
do you have any links to builds that have modified the two piece sump so i can get an idea.
i assume that leaving the one gearbox bolt out on a series 3 is fine then?
It still depends on clearance. Lots of sevens inc Westfield use a modded blacktop sump, I am mid modding one now check my Westfield thread. It's only a ground clearance issue in a seven.
hi,
im interested if anyone knows...
i have ford escort 1996 with 115bhp 1.8 engine. And it has "black top". So can you tell me can i fit better throttlebody from 2.0 litre engine? And what engine has one that can be used?
Poeple saying the 1.6 silver top engines are not tuneable but we use them in our form of stockcar racing and with fairly tight regulations regarding the spec of engines we still see 125-130bhp using a 38 dgas
carb
hi need help iam on doing a conversion in to a mk1 escort got a version 3 engine zetec focus. fitted bellhousing today and noticed the starter wont fit there is a engine/sump lug coming off the engine in the way do I just cut this off and fit starter to the bellhousing or do I buy new bellhousing to suit engine thanks graham
Take the 2nd bit of the two part stock std. sump off and it will all become clear!
Would the 1.8 blacktop gearbox be the same as the gearbox on the 2.0 blacktop
Just been glancing over this thread as I might put a Zetec in my Cortina, prefer to keep the pinto in. Anyway,I thought this info would be handy
http://www.motomobil.com/motorliste-zetec,5905.html
I see in the 1st post that the blacktop doesnt have the ear lug for the gearbox under the starter by design.
Some months ago i found a silvertop 2.0 in mk2 mondeo automatic that had done only 75000 km. The only problem it had was that this ear for the gearbox was broken and i didn't buy it.
Here is a picture: http://prikachi.com/images/297/8168297f.jpg
Now how much of a problem might this be if i drop the engine in my escort and drive it like this (rarely on track, but still plenty of starts from light to light on the street), and also if in n/a state is not a problem, will it become when i put a turbo on it?

I blame a lot of confusion around Zetec differences on Ford Marketing. The sprayed "Zetec" on a lot of unrelated products, including a trim level. WTF? They've done the same with "EcoBoost" in the U.S. - - - explaining that it's a "family" of engines so not necessarily related technology. Rrrrrrr.
Bit of a thread revival but having buggered my 2.0L Blacktop, I have the opportunity to get a refurbed 1.8L head - part numbers are same except last two letters - AB for 2.0L and BC for the 1.8L. I'm pretty sure they'll swap and i'll swap my cams and buckets into the new head, so apart from the possible CR increase . .. . rumoured to be from 10 to 11:1 any other thoughts. CR isn't ideal but 98 octane fuel and engine management will look after that!
