I have a 1.6 mx5 engine box prop wiring and ecu if your interested
Pm me a price and location
I had a 77 Riva once :o
We fitted a 1438 ? Motor from a rotten 124 special we had .
Combined with the low gearing it would surprise a lot off the lights
Pm'ed
Turbo zetec, proper Q car
That's fantastic! Lets hear it for the eastern bloc cars.... or maybe I'm biased

Well got myself a nice little Zetec today
Only a 1.8 but wow
I've never drove a Zetec I know it's not a 2.0 but it's nippy
So over the next month or 2 it will be getting stripped along with the lada
I think fiesta xr2i's had 130bhp with 1.8 zetecs that'd go alright in the old lada
they wer a car in their day pal, jeezo a blast fae the past at, nice tae see again
nice
i drove several for years, always wanted to drop a stupid engine in and leave the outside stock.
you can put in ford diffs, but from memory you need a 3mm spacer for the shafts to align (same spline shafts and bolt positions as ford) i cant remember if you can change the shafts though, ford ones are defo thicker than the lada ones.
they only really need is much stiffer suspension and a steering box swap to be fun. although the engines are a bit weak, its all about maintaining whatever speed you can get it to... i put the last one i had on a turbosport rolling road day, the power graph is one of the funniest things ive ever seen. the engine was a bit sick, bit it wasnt worth fixing. it should be on here somewhere if you fancy a laugh
lol i remember that, it was about 26bhp or somethingthe power graph is one of the funniest things ive ever seen. the engine was a bit sick, bit it wasnt worth fixing. it should be on here somewhere if you fancy a laugh
Used to be one that ran about local to me with a fiat twin cam from a 131
Bloody hell it was quick.....
found it

the top line that plummets from the start is torque
never ever seen a torque curve like that before, nor probably will ever again
the Beardmore Bros website is really useful http://www.beardmorebros.co.uk/website%20pages/lada.htm and Guy Crofts site is full of fiat info which is all related to the riva. there was another site which detailed the development of two riva rally cars. had some excellent info but i cant remember what it was called.
there is also the lada spares fourm which is full of info http://www.lada.co.uk/forum/
as the lada is based on a fiat 124, there may well be conversion kits for them, but i doubt they would be cheap... there might even be a steering box upgrade that bolts on, anything would be better than the standard one with its 1/4 turn of free play in the steering wheel
as it has a front bowl sump and the steering arms go backwards on the hubs i think the best option would be to adapt the rack mounts on the engine cross member with something out of a cortina or anglia (which i think are also front bowl)... there will always be a fair amount of custom fab to get it to work, but as you're swapping the engine anyway it'll need chopping about..
the project i had planned in my head was quite full on, chopping the bulkhead to move the engine back and to have a fully adjustable setup on the front, replacing the suspension arms and steering with bits from caterham (uses custom arms but sierra hubs and escort rack), primarily as i wanted to use a turbo lump so getting decent brakes was a priority, that and it had a lovely tendancy to understeer in standard trim, which would only get worse with more power
Check how lean? i think the fuelling on my lawnmower is better.
thanks for that Dan
you seem to be more clued up than myself so stand by for a hold load of PM's over the next year or you could just buy it and live your dream of modyfing one
no probs, i'll help where i can, it was 10 years ago so i might not remember that much.
my dad still has one sat on the farm, its not in great condition but anything can be rebuilt, mind that car isnt standard as it has the 1.7 engine and injection from a niva, was great fun to drive
Shame does he not want to sell engine so I can have mine a runner until I get all bits together for conversion
But much better than my 1.poo engine
Retro ford built one with the duratec in,running escort suspension rack etc
A lot of fab work done.
Was in PPC a couple of years ago
Interested in this build love strange cars!
Do you recon it would be easier to get a mk2 subframe to mount engine on as there is already a fitting kit available and then a mk2 rack would fit straight on?
the lower arms of the front suspension attach to the crossmember, so unless you leave the whole front setup as is (incl steering box) you'll have to chop and change parts
is the zetec sump front bowl? if it is then you save a fair bit by keeping the rack behind the xmember. there may be a steering box swap for something better which would save a lot of trouble. or you are going to have to blend parts of the lada xmember to a cortina or anglia xmember. i am not even sure that using a ford xmember would mean you can use kit mounts to get the zetec in, they are still likely to need modification to fit if the engine dosnt sit in the right place.
personally i would go with the standard lada xmember, weld on some rack mounts to the back of it and make custom engine mounts... or leave the steering as is and get used to turning the wheel a lot to stay in a stright line
Well after a lot of googling I've found a that a mk2 golf manual rack is a good conversion.
So going to do a lot more research and if All is well buy parts to start the conversion
BUT… I'm now in abit of a pickle as my father has just handed me the keys to his Datsun 120y estate!!!! And don't really have storage for both
What to do, what to do!
Love Rivas. Ever since I saw one on a rally I've had a craving for one ever since haha. Are they a leaf spring rear end?
Na not leaf spring
As I did think about converting it to leafs but I don't think it's possible
love ladas! (guilty pleassure :P )
keep up the good work
keep both and leave the lada on the street, not likely to get nicked
leave the back end alone! the lada setup is a 5 linked and coil sprung as standard... its what most people want to put on escorts to make them handle better
all the back end needs is stiffer springs and uprated dampers, it really is a good setup as is... if you wanted to make it a bit better, add a decent set of bushes or rose jointed bars so it can be adjusted a little.
if you wanted to go further you'd add full length links by removing the back seat and putting in escort link boxes. but for street use i wouldnt bother
I want to keep the rear seats so I'll stick with poly bushes for now
I've heard a few say dampers off other cars fit I'm going to remove 1 coil from rear to make it lower but like said it needs to be stiffer but can't find any info on stiffening the rear. Apart from putting a set of rubber stiffeners what people use for when they are rising caravans
cutting down the rear springs will stiffen them any way
It's getting its welding sorted tomorrow aswell
But what do I put on to protect the welding
Underseal or something else?
Interesting build, like it!. So are you undecided between Lancia and Zetec engines still??
Yes still uncertain
And I've also got a lada 1.5 engine aswell
The lada prices seem to be going slowly up aswell now.
Almost sold the lot the other day as a package deal but lad had no transport for it all
