What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

As it stands my XE will hopefully push out 250bhp and if I upgrade to throttle bodies at a latter date might hit the magic 300bhp mark.
Problem is what gearbox do I use?
I have a standard type 9 and a 2.8i type 9 and know these won't handle that sort of power. Can a type 9 with a Qaife kit handle that power or should I look at somethin bigger e.g. T5 or Toyota Supra box?
Does anyone know where to find a T5 to XE bellhousing off the shelf?
    Any thoughts?

The T5 is very heavy and not ideal ratio wise for a N/A motor, Quaife rate the Type 9 to 250HP but in talking to them they say its the revs and torque that kill the boxes, I wouldnt write of the use of a Type 9 speak to Quaife first.

Brian at BGH might be worth a call too:

MTX75? Much stronger than a type-9 and lighter too because of the alloy casing. Ah just remembered it has an integral bellhousing so not sure if it could be adapted.

Quaife rate the Type 9 heavy duty synchromesh and dog box at 275bhp. They stated that they know of people that use the dog box in excess of 300bhp but they don't recomend it as they have not tested it to that power. They recomended using one of their own boxes, only £3665!
What is a dog box like to drive on the road? Are they really jumpy? I know they are supposed to be loud but just how noisey are they?
What is an MTX75 out of?

the MTX75 is out of higher powered FWD fords i believe, definatly a FWD box.

i think you may wish to consider the MT75 which is a RWD box as fitted to later sierra's, granada's and scorpio's

to be honest you can pick them up dirt cheap and they are stronger than the Type 9

Yeah thats the one I actually meant . But it has an integral bellhousing so I'm not sure if it can be adapted to non-ford applications.

It not an adaptor its a whole new bellhousing. On most gearboxes you can separate the gearbox from the bellhousing, but not on the MT75

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

As the MT75 sounds alot of effort to make fit I am thinking of using a Type 9 as people do use them to 300bhp+. Ideally I still want to drive the car on the road but I don't want it to be a real pig to drive. What is a dog box like to drive on the road? Are they really jumpy? I know they are supposed to be loud but just how noisey are they? I am used to wearing earplugs while driving.

    Loads of MT75 info

Mmmmmmm interesting. I like those prices! Does the speed sensor on the MT75 work the power steering aswell?

It was a GLEBE TS dog box fitted into a special TVR casing so the gear stick came up in the right place, due to the 'slight' moving of the engine lol.

Without nitrous on standard inlet manifold system, nothing over 190bph has been produced. 250bhp spec from an 20XE is a serious spec and requires a lot of work.

300bhp is the vmax this engine has been taken to with throttle bodies...

Daimo: Who said anything about standard?
Steel crank & rods, oversized forged pistons, drysump, big bore exhaust, programmable ignition, Twin 45s,a race head and hot rod cams I think I should be around the 250bhp mark.
Do you know of any answers to the above questions or good XE websites?

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

www.valvers.com (or.co.uk) a site run off a guy on Migweb dedicated to 2.0 16v Redtops.

    Or

www.migweb.co.uk for the actual main website. LOTS of people with carb'd and throttle bodied XE's, but also a more general site for those with C20LETS (Turbo version), V6's etc. But still, some very clued up lads and lasses on there.

I still feel the power is debatable, but hey, thats not the question anyway.

I would say a good running F20 box should be perfectly adiquate, but then thats for FWD cars and i presume this is for RWD. I wouldn't advise going for the F28 (6 speed) either as you would need the transfer box on perminant RWD. The transfer boxes are not the most strongest part of the gearbox on the vauxalls either

Hi, I'm new here - can you point me in the direction of your engine specification?

Regarding the gearbox... whats the budget?

    Cheers.

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

Problem solved regarding the gearbox, got myself a Quaife heavy duty synchro box cheap off e-bay. It will do the trick I think. The engine is not built yet but I am buying up all the parts as they gradually appear. Probably going to spend the funds on the body first and stick a standard xe in until I can pay a good engine builder to put mine together. Most of my parts are listed above.

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

The Quaife will do the trick no worries.

Regarding the power. The difference between 250bhp and 300 wont be down to just the use of throttle bodies. The only way to get this out of a non-nitrous N/A XE is very high revving. By this I mean at least 9500. I can go into this in pm if you like (I know one chap relatively well who is making 300bhp and almost 200lbft tourque).

This type of engine will be useless below 3500-4000 rpm.

    Cool pm away!
I'm thinking 300bhp NA might be out of my reach as the pistons I have already are not big enough. I could sell them and get the larger ones but I don't think it will be worth it. What is your experience then?

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

james just a little note on the details above
what size are your piston? and Compression ratio?

the spec above of the engine you hope to have is easily possible, you only need the steel crank for above 250bhp Xe engines power is with a good flowing exhaust and cams and bigger valves, also the revs, but this is what destorys some gearboxes, namely the T5 cossie box will start crunching very early with an engine reving to 7.5k, but a tranx box or the quaiffe box you got will be ok, they prefer revs to torque but t5 prefers torque ie why it is in Tvr's and Mustangs with big V8's which have lower revs also a cosworth engine has the torque, but put your revs up over 7.5k and you are risking it.

    cheers............Ken

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

I have 8.7 Omega/SBD pistons which should give me a cc of 2044.974254. I am not too sure how much work has been carried out on the head so this might be higher if it has been pocketed. Not sure on compression ratio either, as I do not know if the block has been skimmed. What is the normal height of a block? I have Kent hot rod cams and I am going to get the valves changed and increased in size with solid followers. Going to dry sump it and use the RWD SBD exhaust manifold if it fits. It is going to be revy as the cams power band is 4000-8500rpm.

Mazda rx8 6 speed box would be the strongest and cheapest option. They seam to do the job. I am making up some very nice laser cut adapter plates in the next week or two as i have a tran x type 9 and 8,00rpm and 200ft/lbs is killing the syncros and i am getting fed up pf rebuilding it every 2 events.

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

You wont need to worry about a gearbox cappable of taking a 300bhp xe as 300bhp 2.0ltr vauxhalls do not exist.
Companys like SBD sell a "292bhp kit" but they do not make the power they quote.
People like SBD have a vested interest in quoting inflated power figures....which sells more bits for them.
THE BEST 2.0 vauxhalls out there are 270bhp, max 280bhp.

I have built nearly every kit engine SBD produce for various customers over the years and they simple do not make the numbers they quote and there is no point ringing them to complain as they have heard it all before.

As another well known builder from over here recently said to me, SBD no longer will build you a engine like they used to, they simple supply the parts. Meaning when you ring to complain your 292bhp kit engine is only making 260bhp they have a multitude of excuses they can use.

It may sound a bit harsh but it is fact!

Re: What is the best gearbox for XE with 250+bhp?

My advice to you would be keep your engine the way it is and buy a dog box, for the amount of money you will have to spend to get another 20bhp at best is completly pointless.

Jonnymk3 I think your quoting of No 300bhp Vauxhall motors exist is unfair there is plenty about but the BIG company 'buy my kits' never live up to there claims agreed as for the gearbox question I'm not 100% sure but the T5 is a box suited for low rpm turbo cars and as stated killed by revs suits a 302bhp c20let motor with a rev limit of 6400rpm tho

Companys like SBD sell a "292bhp kit" but they do not make the power they quote.
People like SBD have a vested interest in quoting inflated power figures....which sells more bits for them.

It's possible to hit over 300hp with a stroked 2.3 or 2.5 XE

There is your right, depending what rolling road it has been taken to! But take it to a frequently and well calibrated engine dyno and it will be a different story, this is where the genuine power will show!
