Re: What are English and atlas axles ?
The english axle is a standard escort cortina and anglia axle and is quite weak the atlas axle came on capris and is much stronger.
This might help you out.

Re: What are English and atlas axles ?
all uk escorts came from the factory with english axles, these house the diff in a housing which bolts into the front of the axle casings,
essentually an atlas which houses the diff inside the main casing and is accessed via a rear cover is a capri axle (there are other varients) The atlas is much stronger than an english which is why ford used atlas axles under there escort rally cars. its also heavier and there are about a zillion variations.
for road use or even some competition an english is plenty good enough unless you have serious horsepower, or are giving it extreme grief

Re: What are English and atlas axles ?
The term 'English axle' also confuses matters as its not the correct name for it. Ford refer to it as either a Type C or a Timken axle. It's worth noting that a small amount of Escorts came fitted with a Type E or Salisbury axle.
