Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

I'm in the begining stages of a Zetec into a Mk1 Cortina swap. As some of you know the US $ is very weak to the pound sterling so to save some $$ I fabbed my oil sump. I sourced a 1.8 cvh sump, cut it up. I had a 1500 GT sump, cut it up. Then set to welding it all back together. Follow along and feel free to ask any ??

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

As you can see from the pics very little of the 1.8 cvh sump was used, only the 2 ends and the baffle. The flanges a peices of heavy guage sheetmetal.
As of now it's only partially welded and I need to cut out part of the baffle from the 1500 sump.
I'm not sure if the 1.9 cvh motors that came in our fwd Escorts have a sheetmetal sump or not, if they do then one wouldn't need to source a 1.8 Sierra sump from the UK saving more $$!!!!!

I can confirm that the ST engine, with its two piece sump design has the sump bowl at the front of the engine.

    Fits my Talbot Sunbeam,

What about baffling this sump? Whats the best was to do this? The car will be used for Tarmac rallies. I've heard some people putting Fuel tank baffling foam in sumps.

Sorry lads i know its a fairly old thread but ive got a 2.0l Black top going in a MK1 Cortina with escort rack and pinion so will still need rear drop sump, can i confirm the following

I can use a 1.8CVH sierra sump by using the CVH oil pump and pick up pipe?

Alternator is a CVH one ok to use with Retro Fords alt kit?

Flywheel someones said use the std CVH one as its lighter what clutch to use with a 2.8 type 9 box?

What starter to i need to look for

Also using Bike carbs heard i can use a modified MK4 Escort ECU for the ignition side anyone done it if so what do i need

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

I can use a 1.8CVH sierra sump by using the CVH oil pump and pick up pipe?

Tinaman - Black top uses a two piece sump with one alu ladder and the the tin bottom sump. The 1.8CVH fits the Silvertop which has a one piece alu sump.

Alternator is a CVH one ok to use with Retro Fords alt kit?

Can't help with this one as I haven't gotten this far myself

Flywheel someones said use the std CVH one as its lighter what clutch to use with a 2.8 type 9 box?

If you do you loose the possibilty to use the crank sensor for position sensing/timing that built into the Zetec flywheels and need to add a timing wheel to the front pulley.

What starter to i need to look for

Can't help here as I'm using a Silvertop and I'm not sure if they're the same reg. starter. I am using the starter that cam with my Silvertop. It looks like it'll need spacing out to work properly

Also using Bike carbs heard i can use a modified MK4 Escort ECU for the ignition side anyone done it if so what do i need

Can't help with this one either as i am going either MegaJolt or MegaSquirt for ignition controll (using Wber DCOE 45s).

Not true as you can use the fly wheel from a late xr2i and that uses crank sensor

    Re: FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

Hi guys, i have just bought a focus st170 wreck to convert into my mk1 escort. Could you pommies please give the run down on how to modify the sump, engine mounts and starter motor to suit a sierra 5 speed box. I am going to convert to bike throttle bodies also retain the variable cam timing of the st170, hoping to use the cars computer and wiring loom.
Any help would be much appreciated, this is my 1st contact to your forum. Thanks Ross from Aussie.

    Re: FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

The sump you will struggle to convert as it is a two piece top half ally, bottom half steel. It would be easier to buy a sump from Retroford over in UK but if not then best sump to mod is a 1.8cvh sump off of a Sierra (if you had them over there). The engine mounts on the engine will be nowhere near for rwd so you will have to fab new ones from scratch unfortunately. Starter motor is from the above sierra or a 2 litre DOHC sierra ideally. You can fit an escort pinto starter if you space it away from the bellhousing slightly (about 10-15mm ish from memory). You will need to use a 1.8 zetec flywheel and you can either use the zetec clutch or redrill the flywheel for a pinto clutch. You need to fit a sierra spigot bearing to the crank to support the input shaft. Don't think you will be able to run bike bodies with the original ecu.

I'll repeat my question from my resto thread here:
Will my modified silvertop ally sump fit a blacktop engine if I remove both the tin part and the alu ladder from the blacktop?

See my resto thread in my sig for pics of modified sump

    Re: FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

    hi there fellow ford fruits!
just a couple of queries regarding the sump mods for mark 2 escort.
1:why is the 1.8 cvh specified, what is different on the other cvh engines,as these are more readily available. are the front and rear seal sizes the same?

2:regarding the two piece sump, does the alloy part hang too low itself for the escort near the rack and crossmember?

the oz dollar rules out the retroford option at the moment,it would be more than the engine!

    cheers.

    Re: FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

the 1.8 was fitted to the sierra so its a different shape and more ideally suited for a RWD car. obviously if you plan to cut the shit out of it then it doesn't matter as much, assuming the FWD derivitives are made from tin also?

thanks for the reply. my thoughts exactly, if it's got to be butchered then the shape is not a big issue. i was just curious if they were the same length and width or if the bigger engine had bigger dimensions.
    cheers.

1.8cvh sump is totally different than other cvh sumps.

For example bolt pattern is different, there's a picture in a thread somewhere here.

yeah right, i eventually found the thread, it's on page two {titled zetec rwd sump, posted by darth vader} for those interested and the bolt pattern is different. does anyone know about the 1.9 yankee cvh, if this has the correct bolt pattern, seal sizes, length and with?
    cheers.

    Hi Wellys

Did you find out if the 1.9 sump will fit a Zetec or not, I am trying to help a guy in Winnemucca, NV fit a Zetec into a Lotus Elan +2, he has a blacktop unit and needs a sump off a front wheel drive Escort Zetec (front bowl) but I wondered if this 1.9 might be an option.

I cut and shut what I think was an Escort Zetec sump that came with my silvertop. I had the ally plate and could do a lot of the work myself, but it still cost £60 to get the welding done. side cut out was for the starter. this was to fit in a Tiger Avon I was building at the time.

1.6 was fitted there also, but it's got a different outer radius of an oil pump and accordingly one on sump. Even the engine mounts are a little offset compared to 1.8 ones!

    Re: FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

Just wanted to check, I have also just found this thread. I've sourced a 1.8 CVH sump to fit up to my ST170 engine in my mk2 escort. I've modified the area around the oil pump, slotted the mounting holes, sourced and modified the 1.8 CVH oil pick up pipe and thought I was ready to fit. However, reading some threads on here it would seem that the sump bowl also needs modifying to clear the World Cup x member, is that right? Cheers
