    FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

Heres the forth in a series to help anyone considering the Zetec Upgrade, I have compiled these posts from mainly information off the forums, so a big thanks to everyone who has shared thier data with us.
I will be adding and updating these posts as we find out more so keep an eye on the edited date at the bottom of the post and reread it for the latest information.

    Sump:
    Option 1:
1.8 CVH Modification, the Sierra 1.8 CVH sump will bolt straight onto a Zetec,

Here I have a few pictures of a 1.8 CVH Sierra sump being modified by Gary @ RetroMotorsport, I asked Gary to modify the sump for road and drifting use, we cut out the bit we needed to loose and then baffled the pickup area.

No Need for a special sump here

Spyder cars also use the 1.8 Zetec sump & pick up pipe with no problems.

Yes thats for a front boweled Cortina fitment, you should still modify the pickup for better placement on RWD cars..

How much gap does there need to be between the sump & steering rack?

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

a point worth noting is that the sierra 1.8 cvh pickup pipe bolts strait onto the zetec and matches the sump.

why wont other cvh sumps do the job if cut n shut ?

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

Help!!!!!!!! Wheres the sump pics gone I ve got a black top 2lt and a sierra 1800 cvh sump to fit it, But the sump is to shallow to fit over the zetec oil pump! It wont even fit the block with out the cvh oil pick up fitted So I got a 2lt silver top and thats the same So I thought the sump cant be off a 18cvh sierra! So I went and got a sump and pick up off a sierra myself !! and guess whats coming next! Thats the same Being to a quite a few sites and thay all say the 1800 sierra cvh sump fits straight on its just needs modifying to clear the X_member and Im sure Clints excellent pics didnt have the sump changed around the pick up/pump area ? I am getting a good stock of engine parts tho Can some one tell me where Im going wrong please Also I take it you dont use the front and back 2 sump bolts cos the zetec block hasnt any drillings for them?
    Cheers Paul

Paul the blacktop zetec engine uses the alloy part off the sump for strengthening of the engine.
If you don't use it the engine will flex a lot and will break down.
In a kitcar they use the alloy part and modify the steel part the is bolted underneeth.
If you want a shallow sump you have to use the one from raceline or go for the silvertop zetec and then put the sierra sump under that

    my opinion for this is:
    • blacktop block without alloy strenghtener is as stiff as silvertop block.
    • blacktop block with alloy strenghtener is a bit more rigid than silvertop.
this is written in Ford TIS:
The purpose of the lower crankcase is to dampen the engine vibrations. This leads to a further reduction in the noise level in the passenger compartment.

    Hope you are right
I heard stories about people who didn't use the alloy part and there engine seized up cause off that the sump that was fitted torqued the engine and because it wasn't rigged enough to cope with the power

Thanks for replys, I see what you mean about the alloy part looking stronger but for my use I dont think it will be to much of a issue The main thing is the sierra just dosent fit too well, been on with it again today and the oil pump is pushing the sump to far forward and only half the sump bolt holes are showing Do I open the holes a bit or reshape the front of the sump

I have Sierra cvh sump and phase3 Zetec in my Escort. I reshaped the oilpump area, as you suggested, heated the problem areas with gas welding torch and carefully hammered more space for the oilpump. Stil had to open up some holes a bit.

ps. just got the engine running this weekend

What happens about the windage tray that is integral in the alloy portion of the phase 3 engine and how does the dipstick go into the sump.

Mk5-6 Escort's have front bowled sump. I have '97 Escort engine in my Cortina. Still had to modify the crossmember, I fitted the center part from mk2 Escort crossmember.

I would imagine the ST170 sump is similar to the other zetec sumps as it still fits in the same body shell. Might fit in a cortina, etc but not in an Escort (rear bowl).

1.what was done regarding the now reduced volume of oil ?
    2. where was the pick-up pipe placed, and how?
    3. what was done with the "crank splash plate" that is bolted to the engine- is it ok to leave this off the engine?

the pickup from the std 1.8 cvh can be used
oil volume can be increased with a wing like the rs alloy sump
    windage plate in the bin
sumps are fairly solid, tack it all up and it shouldnt warp too much

If you can bolt it to a scrap block when you weld it Windage tray unfortunately won't fit but had no problems with mine. Weld a wing on the side but make sure you leave clearance for the starter motor! I would add a little extra baffling to the sump whilst its in bits too just to be on the safe side.

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

Is it not possible to modify/cut and shut the ally sump already fitted to the 2 litre Zetec for use on track days in a mk2 escort?

If you're using sump, pick-up pipe and engine mounts out of 1800CVH Sierra, then your zetec block will fit to your sierra with no problems.
Do you have 1800CVH engine mounts?

Re: HOW TO FIT A ZETEC - Part 4 - Sump - NOT FINISHED

sorry my english, by mounts i mean engine mounting brackets.
in the pictures is sierra cvh 1800 block with mounting brackets and sump. these brackets are bolt on to zetec block. so sump will be in same position in relation to crossmember with zetec block as it is with cvh block. so i cannot see any clearence problems.
