Looks fantastic, all the body lines are perfect

They're growing on me a bit too. I think I'll give the wheels a good clean up, keep them for a while and leave the RS2K decal kit till the very end. To tell the truth, I'm starting to get fed up spending me dosh on it.

Just a mini update while I wait at work for a customer to pick his car up.
Car is now taxed tested insured and on the road. Still got a few little bits to do. It was waxoiled last week - the chassis, sills, boot, bonnet and door inners and the rear quarters - does that stuff stink and make your eyes water or what? It's been over a week and my eyes still steam when I sit in it!
Managed to get a brand new set of quarter bumpers for it and I've just ordered a royal blue RS2000 stripe kit from PJG graphics and that will be going on next week.
For those who didn't see it at the October meet, here's a few pics as it is at the moment:

Very nice mate.
was wondering about this over the weekend steve, very nice m8,the stripe kit will finish it right off as well imo
Tada!!
Just a few interior trimmy bits to do - I'll post a full set of pics when I get a decent camera. I'll have a bit of a rest over the winter months while I look for a Big valve head - anyone got one?
looks stunning that very nicely done
Very very nice Steve.
Looks fantastic Steve - I've just gone back over the last few years to remind me of the full story and the work done is mighty impressive.
When did the wheels change to 4-spokes? And are the black/silver ones just a repaint of those from two weeks ago?
Out for a drive on a sunny spring day reminds me why I got this car
The black/silver ones are a repaint of the white ones. Quick tip for painting these wheels - don't bother masking up before painting - spray the lot and just carefully wipe the polished alloy bits with a thinners soaked cloth to remove the paint from them while it's still 'green', but not wet. Takes just minutes.
that looks really great!
the stripes finish it off really just perfect!
the BOLLOXS steve
Lovely steve looks spot on mate
Minor update.
Just ordered a Kent FR32 cam kit from PLR. The cam on this is a bit too wild and its not pleasant to drive when you are stuck in slow moving traffic. Don't know what it was but the cam and head came off a lightning rod car, its got a very high lift (the valves open way below the depth of the head) and what seems to be a massive overlap so I think its only good from 4000rpm upwards! Gonna start stripping the head off today, if PLR give their usual good service the kit should be here tomorrow morning. I'll give the head a decoke and fit a new belt and tensioner. All being well I should be going to the next Essex meet in it.
I'm going to sort out a non-vac dissy (electronic) at a later date but for now, is there any info on converting the vac one and messing about with the advance weights?
Anyone got any recommendations for a fast road electronic dissy kit?
Right, off with it's head!
Im sure Arron at HT's converts a standard bosch dizzy to run no vacumn on it, then just use a luminition kit on it, thats all they use and seems to do the trick.
Grrrr.
Stripped my head down, apart from having one buggered exhaust stud, all the cam bearings are rough and bitty - no way am I fitting my lovely new cam kit on there. To make matters worse, I always thought that this was an injection head because of the size of the inlet ports but I've just noticed a '78' stamp cast into the head so I'm now thinking that it is not injection (and unleaded). It has had quite a bit of porting done to it though. Decisions, decisions. If I cant get an injection head I'll have to get the cam bearings replaced.
2 questions; Has anyone got an injection head to sell me (with good cam bearings and studs!) and if not, how easy is it to fit new cam bearings to my head (I have a press here). Anyone?
Update:
Replaced my cam bearings, bit of a kerfuffle but next one should be a doddle.
Fitted the new cam kit and a non-vac dissy. Car runs sweet but, and there's always a but, I'm getting a puff of blue smoke when I increase the revs after its been ticking over for a while. It definately didn't do that before I removed the head to fit the cam. Symptoms of worn valve seals I know, but I fitted the new ones from the cam kit even though they didn't look quite right. I've since changed the inlet seals again for a different type but still the same symptoms. Very wierd. I get no smoke when starting from cold and no smoke when starting the engine up after being switched off for half an hour or so and no smoke after flooring it after a long overrun. The bottom half has done less than 1000 miles from brand new. I'm going to try changing the exhaust stem seals now - I should have done them at the same time as I fitted the second set of seals to the inlets, (you lazy impatient bastard I can hear you say ). The spark plugs are burning exactly the right colour so I don't think (hope) its actually burning oil, I'm thinking there's oil bypassing the exhaust stem seals and its just being heated by the exhaust gasses when the engine reaches working temperature. I should be so lucky. Lucky, lucky, lucky.......
I'll post a picture of my super duper home made pinto, head on, valve spring remover when I'm done.
Fingers crossed.
Steve..!
You have done a fantastic job with your Escort... old man in Sweden be impressed...
Only one thing... (in my eyes..) counterchange the ugly pipe over the engine... ( tastes differ... )
Best regards

Cracking car mate
Have to agree the stripes really finnish it off, hope you get the smoking issue sorted allways going to be a few teething troubles on these things.
Well, that seems to have cured it.
Bit of advice, if you are fitteing a Kent Cam kit, chuck away the stem seals they supply and fit the ones that come with the head gasket set!
Have a look at the picture - the OE type seal is on the left (note the spring retainer that maintains some light contact between the seal and the stem) and the Kent one is on the right - theres nothing to stop oil running down the stem.
I crudely measured the internal diameters of both seals using drill bits and there was only a .5mm difference but apparently thats all that was needed to cure my problem. Anyway, that's that job done.
Just a mini update - I've noticed its been nearly 18 months since I last posted on this thread.
I've finally got around to fitting an electric fan. I've also fitted some Cibie's and wired up the reverse light. I've moved the seat back a bit so I no longer drive with my kness behind my ears and I've just polybushed the rear springs. I don't think I've done 100 miles in it this year so far.
Still looking for a big valve head.
Latest pic:
Back to page 1.
just read the whole thread no idea how ive missed this one having said that, its been lost a while
Looking good!
just read this read and what a job you've made of this car mate well done looks really nice
Minor update and back up to page 1.
Finally got my Big Valve head (Thanks to Scott_B). Thought I'd strip it and check it before fitting. Found 1 bent valve but I think that happened while the head was rattling about in the back of my car. Never mind, went to Burtons, bought and fitted a new one then I read up somewhere about big valves being too long and affecting the rocker geometry. Checked mine and sure enough, they needed shortening so I made up a guide and shortened the first one on the grindstone. No problem but I needed juuuuust a little bit more off it to get the correct lift and then I had to also modify the cam follower as it was now touching on the valve spring retainer. Took too much off the rocker and valve and fucked the pair of them. Back to Burtons to buy another valve and cam follower. Bit of a kerfuffle but got there in the end - http://www.turbosport.co.uk/showthre...metry-question Did that, spent some time getting the valve spring height right too.Fitted the head using a felpro gasket, dialled the cam in correctly (I hope) and up she started.
Just a couple of random pics:
Car now drives quite smoothly but still not as rapid as I was expecting but then if I wanted more poke I should have got a wilder cam I suppose but they can be bastards to live with in normal traffic and I like my 300 miles per year to be 'smooth'.
Next on my list of 'To Do's' is get a proper ignition set-up, I've got a vacuumless dissy but I understand that the timing should be about 14 degs static and a max of 38 degs at 3500. At 14 degs static it goes way past 38 degs so I'll look into a proper electronic fast road set-up. Any suggestions?
Also on my list, get my 2.8 T9 gearbox stripped and get the mainshaft turned down. What's that likely to come to? Not a lot is it?
Watch out for my next update (in about 18 months probably).
For ignition I would get a Bestek kit. Tell him the exact engine spec and he will supply all the bits.
As for the gearbox. From what I have seen it is just the unsplined sticky out bit that is slightly too long. I would just chop it off with a grinder. Have someone turn the propshaft end while you just put a little chamfer on the cut end.
Just read this for the first time......thats a great thread Steve...I love the car...that chap, Al was it?...he is a bit on the good side to say the least...if I were you I would look at doing a customers classic each month...there has to be a market for skills like that,
Well done...look sorward to seeing it in the flesh sometime..
Russ.
this has been a great read
BTTT 2 weeks after I sold it.
Sold??! I know you had thoughts about selling up but i thought youd decided to keep it after them? Hope you got good money for it, was really tidy
Went a few weeks ago now to someone on here. Some commented that it went too cheap but I think I got a fair price and the new owner was happy with the price he paid so we were both happy. Did you see what I changed it for? Something I'll be getting much more use out of. It's all here: OLD BOYS 'PED.
Fair enough mate, i know what your saying with the interest being in the building and saving another! In the end i think i enjoyed looking at mine more towards the end, so with the pics from my feature im still a happy bunny and got all i wanted and more with the proceeds much like you have
Enjoy the ped you chav
