    suspension overhaul mk1 escort

    hello all,

    this is my first post on here about my mk1 escort

    it started life as a standard 1300, 4 speed




    drove it a couple off years ike that

    then it got a rebuild 1660 cc crossflow

    twin 40 webber carbs
    stage 2 head
    1300cc pistons
    kent cams BCF3 cam




    its been like that for the last years, but never really liked the handling

    This year it got a bog upgrade

    rear:

    Rebuild and narrows atlas axle, 3,77
    Cosworth rear calipers
    Gaz shocks
    Anti tramp bars
    Watts linkage



    new axle disassembled


    measuring and setting up the new axle for shortning


    drilling out the welds


    shortend the half shafts


    the shortend axle


    welding the brackets on


    all painted

    anti dive kit
    adjustable TCA
    Coil overs
    Spax inserts
    Midilite calipers
    Power steering conversion
    New quick steering rack

    setting up the power steering





    coilovers



    also converted to t9 5 speed



    cleaned everthing up and all fitted with new bushes etc






    some general pics, everthing got cleaned,sand blasted and painted before installing

    how much did you narrow your axle and how did you shorten your halfshafts.

    I narrowd it 35 mm on both Sides, 70 mm in total so its about 47-47,5 inch,its mk1 capri axle, so 50inch standard?? with 10 mm spacer on each side the total with at the front and rear Wheelbase will be the same.

    The halfshafts where cut in half in the middle, shortend 35 mm, turned down to 15mm at 1 end and drilled out to 15 at the other end on a lathe on a tight fitting, then used a press to put them back together making sure everything was back in line.

    After this welded them together(tig) and they got balanced and checked for straitness.

    Its a job, but with some planning and thinking it thru not a to difficult job( atleast if they hold )

    thanks for the info,before you welded the 2 halves back together did you use much of a vee to fill with weld.by the way you have a very nice car sir.

    My new project

    After running the car for a couple off weeks ive got a new idea.

    The speedo is ways off after changing the axle and converting to a 5 speed box, 100 km/h is about 140km/h on the speedo.
    The fuel gauge reeds about 1/4 tank to low and the rev counter keeps going all over the place, very annoying

    The plan is to build a custom 6 dial cluster, but keeping the original look, however i dont want to rebuild my original cluster for this, so ordered a glasfiber unit and sourced some dails that i liked.




    after setting it all up the holes had to be drilled


    first holes drilled

    and a trial fit oh yes it fitsssss

    then it was time for the big holes

    with the dail in

    and last one off how it looks like with a quick paint and the dails in, still have to search the speedo en voltage dails.
    Thinking of going the electronic route with the speedo, so its programmable to whatever wheels and axle i use.


    anyone have any experience with electronic speedo's? i want to have the smiths 80mm dail, witch needs a pickup sensor that costs about 55 pounds. Does anyone know if i could use any 12v pickup sensor? ive got some for free at work

    another small update, had the dials delivered and started the wiring.
    very happy with how it looks, somewhat original to the standard 6 dial dash.

    Hi All,
    just finished putting a zetec into my mk1 escort, drives great,

    Only problem i have that its blowing oil out off the top of the oil catch tank.
    got 1 line coming from the top off the valve cover and one from the breather hole on the block.
    Could the problem be the return i have made back into the sump? that the pressure is to high for the oil to run back into the sump and so is filling up the catch tank?
    at the first pic you can see the setup.

    The Oil return to the sump should b below the oil level in the sump to stop it being pressurised :-)

    Do you have problems with tyre rubbing in the rear arches???. I'm thinking about 7" Superlites with English axle, but some people don't recommend it with the original arches

    Mine is the same colour as yours is, but much more stock. 1.3 gt mk1. Mate yours is so beautifull and such quality mods you have there. Congrats mate.
    We have a big problem here in Portugal. Such restrictive laws concerning car inspections dont allow us, at least legally to exchange car engines. One thing id like to do in mine was to get rid of the stock 1300 gt xflow and to get one zetec just like yours. Once again god job.
