porting is the modern term for what was always known as gas flowing, the two things are the same.

Gas flowing is a old school term.. All the same thing at the end of the day.

I thought the gas flowing allowed you to see if your porting was done correctly- by flowing a gas through the ports and looking or measuring at the flow rate? If you don't use that how do you know if you are porting correctly?

What you are referring to is flow testing as on a, or using a flow bench - this measures the performance of the gas flow job. A expert porter will, through experience, know the areas of the port to improve and use the flow bench to test the final result. BUT a flow bench result can't replicate real world in use flow with fuel atomisation and turbulence from carbs / throttle blades etc etc. so like a dyno should only be used as a tuning tool to indicate trends and not a 'be all and end all' definitive result.

first off, you can get a long way simply with experience, i'd say teh large majority of modifed heads have not been deveolped or even been anywhere near a flow bench, professional flowbenchs are not cheap!

blind principles will get you a long way with a lot of heads, however there comes a point where that doesnt work, some heads want material removed from places that wouldnt want removeing from others, ive dont a shed load of testing on a head recently, by removing material and re testing i found flow gains, but without the bench i couldnt of quantified the gains, or you can easily end up a design which flows really well but only beyond wher the cam actually lifts to.

a flowbench cannot replace a dyno, but there are very few cases where a cylinder head improvement isnt a good thing.

No gas is flowed though the heads, forced air is used via a vacuum and yes I have a flow bench and use it to spec my heads to the needs of the owner and the spec of the engine.

I rather see dyno figures rather than flow figures

I have lots of customers using my heads and all making good power. There is one lad on here with a ST170 engine in a mk2 escort running 220bhp. Easy I hear you say. 220bhp and still on a standard inlet that is.

Looks good. Is this going to benefit standard camshafts in a 2.0 blacktop and how much extra Hp will I gain - I will hopefully be using jenveys when I have saved up enough money!

And is it exchange or do I send my head in first?

    Hi,

I have a 2.0lt stock zetec with ITB's and am now looking for more HP. I see that you are in Leeds. If I were to send/bring my head to you, what is your usual turn around. Also what is the likely HP gain with ITB's - Jenvey 45's

    Thanks,

    Craig
